TCL’s next 6 Series TV has a THX-certified gaming mode

[ad_1]

TCL has collaborated with THX on the next edition of its 6 Series TV with a Certified Game Mode, continuing the company’s recent foray into gaming technology. Both companies say the pairing of TCL’s “superior visuals” and THX’s “world-class” technology make gaming on the new 6 Series even more immersive, according to a statement from TCL.

THX first announced the partnership with TCL and the advent of Certified Game Mode at this year’s CES. But we now know more about the 6 Series TV and what Certified Game Mode means for it. The device earned THX Certification, meaning it underwent more than 400 tests ensuring high fidelity of color, tone and images, the statement said. TCL and THX engineers collaborated to adjust the device’s white balance, luminance, black levels and gamma.

New York and California are reportedly helping the FTC investigate Amazon

[ad_1]

Amazon could soon have another problem on its hands. According to BloombergNew York attorney general Letitia James is partnering with her counterpart in California and the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the online retailer. Bloomberg reports the three agencies will work together to interview witnesses over the next couple of weeks.

We knew the FTC and attorney general of California were investigating Amazon before today’s report. But the addition of New York’s AG and the fact it’s working together with the two other agencies represents an escalation. According to Diana Moss, the president of the American Antitrust Institute, the move could also be the prelude to significant antitrust action.

Dish buys Ting Mobile to expand its wireless business

[ad_1]

The sale came out of the merger between the two carriers. T-Mobile and Sprint had to divest themselves of the prepaid brand to get approval for their union from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The agreement also gave Dish access to T-Mobile’s network for seven years. That access now extends to Ting Mobile customers but does mean those people won’t be able to use Verizon’s network like they could in the past. Beyond that, Dish says current users shouldn’t expect too many changes. They can continue to use their existing phones and pay the same rates they’re currently paying.

“Our agreement with Tucows will accelerate our digital and operational capabilities in wireless,” said Dish COO John Swieringa.

Before the T-Mobile merger, Dish spent years trying to enter the wireless market. Now it’s quickly setting itself up to compete in the space. It’s too early to tell whether Dish will become a legitimate fourth player, but getting help from a company that has managed multiple MVNOs in the past should help.

Trump says TikTok has until September 15th to sell US operations or close

[ad_1]

“[Microsoft] is committed to acquiring TikTok subject to a complete security review and providing proper economic benefits to the United States, including the United States Treasury,” the company said in the blog post. If the deal goes through, that would result in Microsoft acquiring TikTok operations not just in the US but also Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

Even though TikTok has said that it does not take direction from ByteDance, there have been lingering concerns that TikTok presents a national security threat supposedly by providing American user data to the Chinese government.

Reuters reported that the September 15th deadline was initially provided by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which provided the 45-day extension in order for Microsoft to make the purchase inquiry.

Not everyone is pleased with the idea of a Microsoft acquisition. The New York Times reports that White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said that instead of purchasing TikTok, the US should ban the app as well as other Chinese-run services like Tencent’s WeChat. He has accused Microsoft of enabling Chinese censorship and said that the company should divest any other business in China if it goes through with the TikTok acquisition.

Microsoft, in its blog post yesterday, said that it would offer “world-class security, privacy and digital safety protections” for TikTok users. It stated: “Microsoft would ensure that all private data of TikTok’s American users is transferred to and remains in the United States. To the extent that any such data is currently stored or backed-up outside the United States, Microsoft would ensure that this data is deleted from servers outside the country after it is transferred.”

Spider-Man is coming to the PlayStation version of ‘Marvel’s Avengers’

[ad_1]

It’s not too surprising to find out Spider-Man is only coming to PlayStation. After all, Sony recently published an exclusive featuring Peter Parker and is working on a standalone title starring Miles Morales. The good news is that players across all platforms will have access to Hawkeye when Crystal Dynamics adds him to the game sometime after launch. What’s more, the studio plans to add both heroes to the game for free.

Marvel’s Avengers comes out on September 4th on Google Stadia, PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One. Next year, it will also make its way to ninth-generation consoles, with PS4 and Xbox One owners getting a free upgrade to the respective next-generation version. In the meantime, you can take part in the game’s PS4 beta this weekend if you pre-ordered the title.

Snapchat targets TikTok by adding music to snaps

[ad_1]

The new feature is already rolling out as a test in Australia and New Zealand, and will launch widely in the fall, according to a Snap spokesperson. Though the feature is still a far cry from many of TikTok’s core features, like lip syncing or re-mixing videos, adding music could still help Snapchat compete with its rivals. Music has proven to be a popular feature on Instagram (which is reportedly set to release its own TikTok competitor soon), and deals with music labels would lay important groundwork for any future music-powered features.

“We’re constantly building on our relationships within the music industry, and making sure the entire music ecosystem (artists, labels, songwriters, publishers and streaming services) are seeing value in our partnerships,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

The update comes as TikTok’s future in the US is still somewhat uncertain. Microsoft confirmed it’s still working on a deal, but the details have yet to be hammered out. Facebook also recently ramped up its music features with official music videos in News Feed.

Garmin reportedly paid millions to resolve its recent ransomware attack

[ad_1]

It hasn’t been revealed who was behind the attack nor to whom a ransom (if any) was paid. Some security researchers believe the WastedLocker ransomware (said to be the cause of the outage) is linked to a Russia-based group of cybercriminals known as Evil Corp. The US Treasury sanctioned that organization last year, accusing it of being responsible for developing and distributing another form of malware called Dridex. The sanction “generally prohibited” US persons from “engaging in transactions” with specific companies and people linked to Evil Corp.

Arete Incident Response, which helps companies secure their networks and resolve attacks, recently suggested that WastedLocker was not conclusively the work of Evil Corp. It published a study on that topic the day after Garmin said it was attacked. Arete told Sky News it “follows all recommended and required screenings to ensure compliance with US trade sanctions laws.”

The Google Pixel 4a vs. the competition: The midrange heats up

[ad_1]

For years most of our attention has been focused on flagship handsets from companies like Apple, Google and Samsung. But since last year’s release of the excellent Pixel 3a, midrange devices have gotten a lot more interesting. Today Google finally announced the Pixel 4a, which cuts a few corners but still delivers fast performance and even a flagship-level camera for the low price of $350. But it isn’t your only choice if you want a great phone in the midrange. We lined up the Pixel 4a’s specs against those of the iPhone SE and Samsung’s Galaxy A51 to see how these devices measure up under the hood. Impossible Burger continues its rapid expansion with Publix

[ad_1]

Impossible Foods announced today that its plant-based Impossible Burger will now be available at more than 1,200 Publix stores. Publix is primarily located in Florida, Georgia and much of the Southeast.

This continues the company’s aggressive grocery store rollout of the Impossible Burger this year. It expanded its retail presence to Safeway, Vons, Albertsons and Kroger a few months ago, and more recently, it made its biggest rollout yet with Walmart. It also recently started being available at Trader Joe’s.

Microsoft redesigned the Xbox store ahead of Series X debut

[ad_1]

Microsoft Store on Xbox

Microsoft

Microsoft has overhauled the store’s navigation system, as part of its aim of “making it easier than ever to find your next favorite game, app, movie or TV show.” There are more search filters, a revamped Wish List and an updated cart — it should be easier to see what items you’ve added to it. There’s a focus on backwards compatibility, so you’ll be able to see pricing for Xbox One games, as well as Xbox 360 and Xbox titles you can play on your current console (or Xbox Series X, when the time comes).

To browse the store, you’ll first need to sign in with your Xbox account. Not only will that enable personalized recommendations, it’ll allow Microsoft to be more robust with its content filters. If a kid is using an account with content filters in place for a 10-year-old, for instance, they can’t browse or search for content that’s rated for teens or adults.

The company says it’ll also be easier for caregivers and parents to lift restrictions on specific games, films and TV shows — they might be okay with giving younger kids access to the teen-rated Sea of Thieves, for example. The content ratings, meanwhile, will be much clearer. They’ll be visible at the start of every trailer, at the top of game details pages and all the way through the checkout process.

Microsoft will let some Xbox Insiders (aka beta testers) try the new-look store for themselves starting on Wednesday. It’ll gradually roll out the update more broadly and it’ll be live for all users this fall.
