Apple now considers your 2014 MacBook Air ‘vintage’

[ad_1]

Some of Apple’s better-known laptops are riding off into the proverbial sunset, at least as far as the company is concerned. The company has added (via MacRumors) mid-2013 and mid-2014 MacBook Air models (plus the mid-2014 13-inch MacBook Pro) to its “vintage” list, potentially limiting their support. You can still get hardware service from providers, including some Apple retail shops, but access may be dictated by “availability of inventory” or local laws.

Apple also put the fifth-generation iPod touch on the vintage list, although that’s not surprising when the media player hasn’t received major software updates since iOS 9.

‘Iron Man VR’ will arrive on July 3rd

[ad_1]

Sony delayed Iron Man VR a second time in early April due to the impact of COVID-19, and it has now found a new release date for the virtual reality shooter. All going well, it’ll be available for PS VR on July 3rd.

In January, developer Camouflaj pushed back the game from February 28th to May 15th because it needed more time to “deliver on our vision” and meet high expectations. But Sony took Iron Man VR (and The Last of Us Part II) off the release calendar completely last month because the pandemic wouldn’t allow the company to provide “the launch experience our players deserve.” However, both games are now back on the schedule and should arrive within the next six weeks. Fingers crossed they won’t be moved yet again.

August’s slimmer WiFi smart lock is now available for $250

[ad_1]

After debuting earlier this year at CES 2020, August’s latest smart lock is now available to buy. Starting today, you can purchase the $250 WiFi Smart Lock on the company’s website and Best Buy (where it seems to have sold out already). On May 17th, it will also be available at other major retailers.

Besides a 45 percent smaller design, the WiFi Smart Lock’s marquee improvement is that you don’t need a Bluetooth bridge to use it. Instead, it pairs directly with the August app. The company also added textured ridges to the side of the lock to make turning it manually easier.

Twitter will let employees work from home indefinitely

[ad_1]

It’s not completely surprising that Twitter would do this, and not just due to the relatively flexible nature of developing an internet-based service. Physical presences can be expensive between basic office space, amenities, relocations and travel costs. This could save money in the long run as Twitter only needs to accommodate those workers who need or want to come in.

To some extent, this also acknowledges that the pandemic may transform attitudes toward working from home. While companies have long insisted that people come in for the sake of collaboration and in-person interaction, some may decide that it’s simply not necessary or even thrive by staying put. Remote work avoids lengthy commutes and office drama while allowing more time with family — some of Twitter’s employees may be reluctant to give that up no matter how safe it is outside.

‘What the Golf’ is coming to the Nintendo Switch on May 21st

[ad_1]

The hilarious, physics-based pseudo-golf game What the Golf is making its way to the Nintendo Switch later this month. The game was initially released in September on Apple Arcade and Windows, and won the 2020 Game Developers Choice Award for the best mobile game, so it will likely be a welcome addition to the hybrid console’s library. The Switch version will come with a new competitive party mode for side-by-side gameplay, and will make use of the console’s touch screen and gyroscope.

What the Golf takes the basic concepts of golf and twists them into silly and surprising mini-games that barely even resemble the sport. The characters — which include a toaster and a penguin wearing a hamburger suit — are adorable, too. Gamers who haven’t tried it yet and like what they see in the trailer may want to pre-order the game to save 25 percent on the standard $20 price. The game will be out on May 21st via the Nintendo Switch eShop.

Motorola promises one additional Android update for the $1,000 Edge+

[ad_1]

The new policy doesn’t propel the Edge+ into a category of its own, but it does make it at least competitive against some other Android devices. For instance, like most of Samsung’s high-end devices, the recently released Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip will receive two major Android upgrades. If software updates are the thing you care about the most, then Google’s Pixel’s lineup is still unmatched — at least when it comes to Android.

Still, this is at least a step in the right direction for Motorola, particularly for a phone that will cost $1,000 when it comes out. Since Google sold the company to Lenovo, it hasn’t had the best track record of updating its devices in a timely matter, nor has it done a great job of supporting them over time. But between today’s announcement and the Android 10 update the company released for the Razr, things are starting to look up.

Instagram adds new comment filtering tools to combat bullying

[ad_1]

Instagram now allows users to remove up to 25 comments at once.

Instagram

The move will address a longstanding issue for many users who say that previous comment controls were too cumbersome to be effective as an anti-bullying tool. This was especially true for higher profile users, or anyone who has had their comments “swarmed” as a form of targeted harassment, since removing hundreds or thousands of comments one-by-one could take hours.

Instagram is also testing a new feature that will make it easier for users to control which comments are most visible in their feeds. The new “pinned comments” feature lets users choose which comments they want to draw attention to. The update is notable in that it’s one of the few ways users have been able to control which comments appear first in Instagram’s algorithmically-sported comments section.

Finally, the app will allow users to control who can tag or mention them in posts. With the new setting, any account will be able to choose who they want to be able to tag or mention them in a post or on Stories: everyone, no one, or only those they follow.

Instagram has also been testing a feature that hides like accounts, a change Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has said is meant to “depressurize” the app, particularly for its younger users. The company hasn’t given an update on that experiment, or if it will roll out more widely.

‘Apex Legends’ developers’ new studio embraces remote work

[ad_1]

“We want time to iterate on everything and get ideas and feedback from the whole team,” he wrote on the company’s website. “We’re building this studio to last for decades, and that doesn’t happen without putting the team first.”

The duo is capping the size of the company at 85 employees to make sure the team can work flexibly and without too much red tape. McCoy and Shiring plan to maintain an anti-crunch culture — in a similar vein, Respawn said last year it’d space out Apex Legends updates to avoid overworking its developers.

Although the studio is based in Los Angeles, it’ll embrace remote working. “Since one of the core values of Gravity Well is increased diversity, we’re excited about not being hamstrung by relocation or work visa issues,” Shiring wrote. “We want to hire the best talent in the industry, regardless of where you live.”

McCoy and Shiring were among dozens of developers who left Infinity Ward after parent company Activision fired that studio’s founders Vince Zampella and Jason West in 2010. The latter duo then started Respawn and hired many of their former employees to work on Titanfall

Schwarzenegger is coming to ‘Predator: Hunting Grounds’

[ad_1]

For the first time in 33 years, Arnold Schwarzenegger will reprise the role of Dutch from 1987’s Predator movie. On May 26th, you’ll be able to play as Major Alan Schaefer in multiplayer shooter Predator: Hunting Groundsprovided you’re willing to buy the game’s upcoming paid DLC

On the same day, developer Illfonic plans to release free downloadable content that will detail what Dutch has been up to since the events of the original Predator through a series of collectible audio logs. Unlike the records that are already in the game, you’ll earn these by leveling up your account — so no need to try and find them in the middle of a match. As part of the paid DLC, you’ll also get early access to the QR5 “Hammerhead” Rifle and Dutch’s knife.

YouTube Music will transfer your Google Play songs with one click

[ad_1]

Google says this whole transfer process will take place in steps, but the whole thing should take less than an hour. Of course, edge cases with massive music libraries or tons of uploads can take much longer, up to a few days. But even libraries with tens of thousands of songs shouldn’t take very long to port over. I was able to transfer my modest collection of about 8,500 songs, 131 saved stations and about 30 playlists in 15 minutes. In a demo with Google last week, a demo transfer of a account with more than 10,000 songs and many more playlists happened in just about the same amount of time.

As the transfer happens, you’ll find a banner on the YouTube Music homepage highlighting things it pulled over from the old service, and you can use the app while the transition is in progress. Google will send both an email and a push notification once everything is complete. Google Play Music will continue working for the time being, so if a user goes back to the old service for a while and wants to initiate a new transfer of their account, they can do it as many times as they want.

At the same time as Google launched this transition tool, it also confirmed that Play Music will shut down for good this year. We don’t know exactly when, but the writing is clearly on the wall at this point. At this point, though, most Play Music holdouts should feel pretty comfortable switching over, in my opinion — basically all the deal-breaking problems I originally encountered have been fixed. Navigating a music library is far better now, with basic things like sorting albums from A to Z (instead of by recent additions) is thankfully present now. Similarly, if you add a song or album to your library, the artists will show up under your artists list; you don’t have to “subscribe” separately to an artist channel.
