Tinder will add one-on-one video chats this summer

[ad_1]

As The Verge notes, video chat would be one of the app’s biggest feature launches. It’s a huge undertaking for Tinder, seeing as it has as many as 50 million users worldwide who would potentially use the feature to talk to matches before meeting them in person. In addition to dealing with the technical aspect of the feature, Tinder may also have to deploy new safety measures tailored for video chats.

In addition to announcing the upcoming feature, Match Group has revealed that it’s “seen a noticeable increase in activity among users, especially those under the age of 30, across all of [its] brands and all geographies” since the outbreak. Users have also been sending more messages and engaging in longer conversations, which doesn’t exactly come as a surprise considering most people are staying at home.

GoDaddy confirms security breach affecting 28,000 hosting accounts

[ad_1]

GoDaddy has admitted to BleepingComputer that 28,000 customers’ hosting accounts had been compromised in a security breach. The company notified affected users through an email that an “unauthorized individual” obtained access to their login information. It added that it found no evidence that the compromised accounts’ files had been modified in any way and that it had already blocked the unauthorized individual from its systems.

In a statement sent to the publication, GoDaddy revealed that the affected web hosting accounts had been exposed through an altered SSH file, which it has already removed from its platform to protect the rest of its 19 million users. The security incident took place on October 19th, 2019 and was discovered on April 23rd, 2020 after the company’s security team detected suspicious activity on some of its servers.

‘Halo 2: Anniversary’ comes to PC on May 12th

[ad_1]

It’s been a long time coming, but Halo 2: Anniversary is finally coming to the PC as part of the Master Chief Collection. It arrives on Steam, the Microsoft Store and Xbox Game Pass for PC on Tuesday May 12th, where it will join Halo: Reach and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.

There’s still a little way to go before the full collection is available on PC — it’s still notably missing Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4, although Microsoft has said they’ll drop before the year is out. At least PC gamers know the titles are on the way, although that’s probably not much consolation given the console version of the collection launched with them all ready to go back in 2014.

New wireless spec will let you charge earbuds with your smartphone

[ad_1]

The standard could work with other NFC-equipped devices besides smartphones, including chargers, PCs, tablets and even gaming controllers — the Wii U gamepad has an NFC chip, for instance.

Apple, Sony and Google are NFC Forum sponsors, Samsung is a principal member and Huawei is an associate member. Apple had reportedly planned to introduce bilateral charging for the iPhone 11 that might have worked with its AirPods earphones, but that didn’t happen (yet). If it does introduce such a feature, it will likely work with Qi in order to be compatible with its Watch and AirPods cases.

Meanwhile, Samsung introduced a form of the tech called Wireless Powershare (based on the Qi charging standard), with the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Buds earphones. Huawei introduced a similar feature on the Mate 20 Pro. Neither of those devices directly use NFC for charging, however.

The new WLC standard may may improve compatibility between devices from different manufacturers while allowing easier charging for internet of things devices. However, the specification has only just been published, so implementation is still some years away.

Twitter is testing a new threaded conversation layout on iOS and the web

[ad_1]

Twitter has started testing a new threaded conversation layout that’s meant to make it more obvious who’s talking to whom. Based on the GIF posted by the Twitter Support account, the new layout makes use of lines and indentations to clearly indicate that a reply is meant for a specific tweet. As TechCrunch notes, it looks particularly useful for longer threads where participants go back-and-forth and where people post responses to several separate tweets.

The platform has been experimenting with this layout over the past year on its prototype app twttr, TC says, and app researcher Jane Manchun Wong posted a demo on her account in early April. Wong’s demo shows that clicking on a tweet in the threaded layout expands it and gives you an easy way to post a response to it.

NBA 2K League comes to traditional TV on ESPN2

[ad_1]

Despite establishing an esports footprint a couple of years before COVID-19 canceled live sports for a while, the NBA 2K League is only just now coming to traditional TV. While we’ve seen a number of broadcasts for NASCAR, F1, FIFA and Madden in the past few weeks — not to mention other video games like Overwatch, Fortnite, Apex Legends and League of Legends — today the NBA 2K League debuted on ESPN2 with its season-opening games.

The league announced that ESPN has a deal to broadcast matches through out the season, and for the next few weeks at least, that will include live games on ESPN2 every Tuesday night. The rest of the week’s matches will be presented in the ESPN app, all in addition to the streams on Twitch and YouTube.

Zoom’s latest changes to prevent ‘zoombombing’ arrive on May 9th

[ad_1]

Zoom is implementing more of its promised measures to bolster security and prevent “zoombombing” by unwanted guests. To start, it recently gave admins the option of disabling personal meeting IDs for scheduling and starting meetings. An intruder who discovers the ID can’t use it to host a videoconference. On May 9th, basic (aka free) accounts will need to use passwords for all meetings. Waiting rooms and host-only screen sharing will be on by default for these free users, too.

These changes come well into lockdowns for the COVID-19 pandemic, and too late for a host of teachers, businesses and personal users who’ve had to deal with trolls and and pranksters interrupting their video chats. Still, it’s an important step that could reassure those relying on Zoom — not to mention reduce incentives to consider alternatives like Google Meet.

Stadia’s game controller finally works wirelessly on your computer

[ad_1]

Google Stadia’s wireless controller is finally overcoming some of its early limitations. As of this week, the Stadia Controller no longer needs to be plugged in to your computer to play games on the web. You can leave the USB-C cable behind when you want to fire up Doom Eternal, which may be important if you’re using a laptop with few ports.

The addition just requires linking the gamepad to the service through your WiFi network. It may not sound like the largest addition, but it brings Stadia closer to Google’s original vision of having the same gaming experience across every device. Now, you can switch relatively seamlessly between your TV and PC.

NASA is helping Tom Cruise film a movie in space

[ad_1]

The title is reportedly in the very early stages, with no studio involved and no release window. SpaceX doesn’t expect to offer tourist flights aboard Crew Dragon until the second half of 2021 at the earliest.

It’s not shocking that both sides would be eager to work with each other. Cruise is well-known for doing as many of his own stunts as possible, often at high risk. It doesn’t get much more authentic than shooting a space-themed movie in orbit. NASA, meanwhile, has many incentives to team up with the actor. As TechCrunch explained, it’s not just about Bridenstine’s aim to “inspire a new generation of scientists.” This could help NASA turn the ISS into a place of business, and Cruise’s movie could serve as a marketing tool to attract more companies.
