Twitch viewing soared 23 percent in March

[ad_1]

Twitch also saw a 17 percent jump in total hours watched compared to the previous quarter, and a 19.5 percent leap in concurrent viewers. The number of unique channels has jumped 33 percent over that past quarter. And while the total number of hours streamed had been declining throughout 2019, it’s now at a record high of 121 million hours. Viewership is going up in part because there are more broadcasters, not just more interest in the channels already present.

This isn’t to say rivals are necessarily struggling. Facebook Gaming has seen a surge over the past year, and Mixer enjoys both the second-highest number of hours streamed as well as more broadcasters than Facebook and YouTube combined. It’s nonetheless evident that Twitch is benefiting the most from the sudden shift in behavior. It may just be a question of what happens when life returns to (relative) normal.

LeVar Burton will read to you live on Twitter starting this week

[ad_1]

If, like a lot of people, you’re trying to find ways to fill time while stuck inside, LeVar Burton may just have something to help. In one of the few pleasant surprises of the coronavirus pandemic, the former Star Trek star and Reading Rainbow icon announced he’s taking the premise of his popular podcast, LeVar Burton Reads, and making it available on Twitter.

They’ll be three different sessions, starting with a “For Adults” one that will air every Friday at 9PM ET, beginning on April 3rd. Following that first episode, every Monday at 12PM ET Burton will read something for children. Blissfully, they’ll also be something for teens, with the young adults’ session, which will air every Wednesday at 6PM ET. Between the two live streams for younger audiences, it should hopefully be easier to find something thoughtful for the kids to do.

Social distancing is pushing esports into the mainstream

[ad_1]

Take NASCAR for example. When in-person races were canceled this year, NASCAR and Fox Sports announced the first-ever eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series, a simulation-style competition featuring stars like Dale Earnhardt Jr., Bobby Labonte, Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin racing in digital vehicles. It was the first time many NASCAR fans — and drivers — were exposed to the magic of professional gaming.

The inaugural eNASCAR race aired on March 22nd and it was the highest-rated televised esports program to date, drawing in 903,000 viewers. It was also the most-watched sports broadcast that Sunday, and the most-watched program on its host channel, FS1, since most sports events were canceled on March 12th. The following race on March 30th clocked 1.33 million viewers, breaking the previous Sunday’s record.

Torque Esports is running The Race All-Stars Esports Battle, an online event serving Formula 1, IndyCar, Formula E, NASCAR and other audiences in the wake of mass event cancelations. This event has already attracted new advertising partners including its first corporate sponsor, Jones Soda.

“We’re in discussions with many brands at the moment who are looking at esports for the first time,” Torque Esports CEO Darren Cox said, noting this is Jones Soda’s first foray into the industry. “Our goal, and this goes for streaming numbers and fan interest as well, is that the current situation doesn’t become just a blip on the radar. We want to use this as a foundation to continue to grow the sport. Many brands remain in the discovery and education process at the moment, but they are liking what they see.”

This interest isn’t limited to the racing genre. Vice President of Overwatch Esports at Blizzard Entertainment Jon Spector said, “We are seeing an increased interest in gaming, streaming and esports overall,” while LCS head Greeley said, “We’re seeing excitement in partnership discussions.”

Greeley noted that in 2019, Nielsen ranked the LCS as the third-most popular professional sports league in the US among 18- to 34-year-olds. This is a coveted market for advertisers, and a sign that esports were already on the radar of major sponsors. The coronavirus pandemic has only accelerated their involvement.

“We see this activity more as a continuation of sponsorship trends than a big change, since the esports ecosystem and leagues like LCS have been gaining momentum for some time now in global media,” Greeley said. “Sponsors are drawn to the size and passion of the esports community, and we believe that’s only going to continue growing from here.”

Esports Overwatch Season 2

Torque Esports’ analytics group, Stream Hatchet, says esports streaming viewership has grown more than 17 percent from January to March this year, with 1.75 billion minutes of content watched around the world in March alone. A 12-hour Stream Aid Charity Marathon on Twitch last Saturday raised $2.8 million for the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.

“We’re introducing esports to a much wider audience, particularly in the motorsports genre,” Cox said. “The ‘stay at home economy’ is something that is expanding rapidly and our live-streaming data analytics team at Stream Hatchet is certainly seeing dramatic increases in all platforms at the moment.”

Of course, the global pandemic has disrupted the esports world, too. Established leagues like the LCS and OWL have the resources to quickly pivot and implement online-only tournaments, and sponsors are already knocking. However, newer leagues might find it harder to catch their footing. For instance, the Apex Legends pro scene kicked off this year and was already struggling with server issues, a lack of advertising and poor management structures before the outbreak began. Organizers announced yesterday they would move the remainder of the Apex Legends Global Series online, with the finals airing on Twitch and YouTube on April 6th. It’s a rough first year for any league.

Even established organizations are feeling the pressure: Chaos Esports Club let go its entire Dota 2 squad following the suspension of the Dota Pro Circuit this year.

“This is not a decision we made lightly, but during these uncertain times and with the DPC circuit suspended it is impossible for us to justify the cost of a Dota 2 team at this time,” Chaos Esports Club CEO Greg Laird said at the time. “The world is an unprecedented situation and it is necessary for us to focus our efforts into a few key current and upcoming projects for the long-term success of the organization.”

Compared with many other industries, esports have experienced low job loss during the global pandemic, largely because leagues are able to transition online instead of shutting down altogether. Unemployment rates in the US are expected to hit their highest point since World War II, with conservative estimates projecting 20 million Americans will lose their jobs in the next few weeks.

Esports are well-positioned to serve an audience that’s trapped at home, and organizers are doing everything they can to capitalize on this strange new market. The trick, they say, is making all of this progress stick even after the pandemic has ended.

“We’re very interested in using this as the foundation for long-term growth,” Cox said. “Esports as a whole has been growing dramatically in recent years and now we’re in a massive spike. Once traditional sport returns we’re obviously going to see a levelling off. But in five years’ time we want to look back on today as not just ‘the COVID-19 esports thing,’ but as a tipping point for when esports took its first steps into the mainstream and cemented its place alongside other professional sports.”

Apple Card holders can defer April payments, too

[ad_1]

The offer is in line with efforts by banks and other financial institutions to address the sudden surge of people who are out of work or otherwise taking a monetary hit due to the pandemic. Apple, Goldman Sachs and others are still expecting customers to pay eventually, but don’t want to risk financial ruin for legions of customers in the process.

DoorDash now delivers from convenience stores

[ad_1]

With the coronavirus pandemic pushing more and more Americans to self-isolate and stay inside, DoorDash is starting to deliver items from convenience stores. Starting today, the company is partnering with both national and regional chains across the US — including 7-Eleven, Wawa, Casey’s General Store and CircleK — to make essential products like toilet paper, cleaning supplies and snacks available to order. In all, more than 1,800 stores throughout the country are joining the platform, with more to follow in the coming days and weeks.

DoorDash Convenience

You can order from a store by tapping the “Convenience” category tab at the top of the app. If you want to keep both yourself and your delivery person safe, there’s a no-contact drop-off option. In some instances, there’s also a pickup option, though that depends on availability.

‘PUBG’ April Fools’ mode features fantasy characters and loot tweaks

[ad_1]

Most people might not be in the mood for April Fools’ pranks this year, but PUBG is adding some silliness to its popular game to perk up gamers who are cooped up inside. Fantasy Battle Royale is an optional event that adds four sword-and-sorcery classes and changes up some mechanics. Gamers can choose to play as a Barbarian, Ranger, Wizard or Paladin, and can craft items on the battlefield. That means players will have to strategize around staying alive while simultaneously upgrading their starting gear. The event starts today and will run until April 7th.

Eyesy is a Raspbery Pi-powered video synthesizer

[ad_1]

In addition to simply displaying a responsive animation, Eyesy has a persist button that allows your visualizations to pile up into chaotic lo-fi collages. You can even use it to create static pieces of art by quickly capturing screenshots with the press of a button and saving them on the included 8GB MicroSD card.

Critter & Guitari Eyesy

Just like the Organelle M, the Eyesy has a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ inside, giving it a lot more horsepower than the ETC. In addition, Critter & Guitari added a Composite Video output and a shift button that will expand the number of on the fly controls available to the user. (Though, the company said exactly what those shift functions may change before shipping in June.)

Lastly, the file manager from the Organelle has made its way over to the Eyesy, making it much easier to download your screenshots and upload new modes.

Right now Critter & Guitari is making the Eyesy available through Kickstarter for $295, but when it reaches retail the price will be $395. And it’s worth noting, that Eyesy is almost ready to go. Development is more or less completed, the company says the parts have already been ordered and it shattered its crowdfunding goal in a matter of hours.

‘Uncharted 4′ is free on PlayStation Plus in April

[ad_1]

For people who have already played Uncharted 4, the other free game in April is Dirt Rally 2.0. While it won’t appeal to everyone, race sim fans will likely find a lot to like about the rally car game.

If you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you’ll be able to download Uncharted 4 and Dirt Rally 2.0 starting on April 7th, with both games available until May 4th. In the meantime, you still have the chance to grab the excellent Shadow of the Colossus remake for free until April 6th.

Dell XPS 13 review (2020): Tweaked to near-perfection

[ad_1]

So what’s different? The most obvious upgrade is that Dell has completely gotten rid of the XPS 13’s lower screen bezel. Now, the display nearly touches the edge of the keyboard area, even further than the XPS 13 2-in-1. That effectively gives the computer a slightly taller 13.4-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. While it’s not quite the extra-tall 3×2 ratio we’ve seen on Microsoft’s Surface Laptops, the extra screen space is enough to make working on the notebook a bit more freeing. And it’s worth noting Microsoft’s machines still can’t match ultra-thin bezels of Dell’s InfinityEdge displays. The XPS 13’s 91.5 percent screen to body ratio is also impressive, and it even manages to outdo HP’s ultra-sleek Spectre x360. The XPS isn’t nearly as flashy as the Spectre, but I actually prefer Dell’s understated design.

Additionally, Dell also pushed the keyboard to the edges of the XPS 13 and made the keycaps 9 percent larger, both of which makes for a more comfortable typing experience. Thankfully, you won’t find the MagLev keyboard from the 2-in-1 model, which was a controversial way of adding feedback to that laptop’s shallow keyboard. Instead, Dell stuck with the scissor switch key design the XPS 13 is known for. While it doesn’t have the luxuriously deep key travel of the Spectre x360, it still felt better than most ultrabook offerings. The XPS 13’s trackpad is also 17 percent larger than before, and it feels just as smooth and accurate as the last model.

Alphabet’s DeepMind AI is better than you at Atari games

[ad_1]

Deepmind Agent57

According to MIT’s Technology Review, Pitfall and Montezuma’s Revenge require the AI to experiment more than usual in order to figure out how to get a better score. Meanwhile, Solaris and Skiing are difficult for the AI because there aren’t as many indications as success — the AI doesn’t know if it’s making the right moves for long stretches of time. DeepMind built upon its older AI agents so that Agent57 could make better decisions regarding exploration and score exploitation, as well as to optimize the trade-off between short-term and long term performance in games like Skiing.

Technology Review notes that while these results are impressive, AI still has a long way to go. These systems can only figure out one game at a time, which it says is at odds with the skills of humans: “True versatility, which comes so easily to a human infant, is still far beyond AIs’ reach.” That said, AI is already in use across industries. The lessons learned from Agent57 could help improve performance, even if human-level skills aren’t achievable for now.
