Computex 2020 is delayed to September

[ad_1]

What’s surprising here is not that Computex is the latest tech conference to be affected by the outbreak, but that its organizers feel confident they’ll be able to hold an event this year at all. In most cases, we’ve seen other organizations such as the GSMA and ESA outright cancel events like Mobile World Congress and E3 this year. Some groups, such as the company that puts together the Game Developers Conference (GDC), have announced rescheduled shows for later in the year. At this moment, it seems premature to hold an international conference. In the meantime, it sounds like we still may see companies make announcements between June 2nd and 6th, with Computex’s organizers saying they’ll help host new product launches over the internet. So PC enthusiasts won’t have to wait until September get a flood of information about new hardware.

YouTube will limit video quality for everyone by default for a month

[ad_1]

It follows a similar measure YouTube and many other streaming platforms have adopted temporarily in Europe to lower their bandwidth usage amid the coronavirus outbreak. EU regulators asked them to make the change to ease internet congestion in the region amid the coronavirus outbreak.

“We continue to work closely with governments and network operators around the globe to do our part to minimize stress on the system during this unprecedented situation,” YouTube owner Google told Bloomberg.

As more people are staying at home to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, streaming video usage has reportedly risen dramatically in many areas. While YouTube viewership has typically peaked in the evenings, it said usage is now more consistent throughout the day.

Xiaomi’s Redmi K30 Pro touts flagship specs at a mid-range price

[ad_1]

The camera array features a 64-megapixel primary sensor, 13-megapixel ultrawide, 2-megapixel depth-of-field and a 5-megapixel telephoto camera. Xiaomi is also offering a K30 Pro Zoom version with 8GB of RAM and a longer, 30x hybrid zoom.

Other features include 6GB of RAM (LPDDR5 on most models), up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, 8K video recording on the main camera, a 4,700mAh battery with 33W USB-C fast charging (a full charge takes 63 minutes), IP53 water resistance and a new haptic feedback system. It also has a 6.7-inch 1080p 60Hz OLED display, WiFi6 and Bluetooth 5.1, NFC and a rear light sensor to improve automatic brightness performance.

The K30 Pro launches in China and should come to India later on. A version (possibly the Mi 10T) could also appear in Europe. It starts at 2,999 yuan ($425) with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and goes up to 3,999 yuan ($565) for the K30 Pro Zoom with 8GB of RAM and 265GB of storage — quite a bargain next to comparable flagships from Samsung and other brands.

Apple rolls out option to buy Mac and iOS apps as a package

[ad_1]

Developers only need to change the bundle identifier on their Mac app to the same one as their iOS app, and the App Store will take care of the rest. As Apple explains, “First create a single in-app purchase under the Features tab in App Store Connect, then use StoreKit to implement the in-app purchase in the various platform versions of your app.”

As 9to5Mac notes, however, there aren’t yet any applications that support Universal Purchase between Mac and iOS. “This is because Apple has not yet made the Xcode 11.4 GM available to developers.”

The introduction of Universal Purchase is part of Apple’s ongoing Project Catalyst initiative, which the company announced in 2019. Its main objective, according to a Bloomberg report from last year, is to eventually allow developers to merge their iPhone, iPad and Mac applications into a single app.

Apple’s App Store is coming to 20 more countries

[ad_1]

The list of new countries is as follows (according to 9to5Mac): Afghanistan, Gabon, Cote d’Ivoire, Georgia, Maldives, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cameroon, Iraq, Kosovo, Libya, Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nauru, Rwanda, Tonga, Zambia and Vanuatu.

Apple currently offers the App Store in 155 countries or regions, so the latest expansion will boost that to 175 nations and regions out of 195 in the world. As a 9to5Mac commenter noted, the population of those countries combined is 291 million people, marking a substantial boost in potential users. According to a happy Serbian commenter, so far the workaround has been that “we had to use [the] US App Store and couldn’t save our card details. I’m shocked!”

Chrome’s new release schedule will skip version 82 entirely

[ad_1]

Last week Google announced it will pause Chrome and Chrome OS releases to deal with its adjusted work schedules as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. At the time, the company said that it would work to ensure current releases are as stable as possible, and that for now, it will not promote Chrome 81 from beta to stable.

As Chrome Unboxed points out, a post a few days ago explains that the new plan is to skip a milestone release entirely. Director of Technical Program Management Jason Kersey writes in a post the beta channel will remain on version 81 until 83 is ready to promote from the development channel, while 82 will skip its cycle through the process entirely. That could mean an earlier release date than planned for version 83, but no decision has been made there yet.

Chrome 81 is supposed to bring new mixed reality features and a trial of NFC tie-ins to the browser, and HTTPS changes that will remove older protocols and block some content if it tries to load via HTTP on a secure site. About Chromebooks notes Chrome OS features anticipated for version 81 that include easier sideloading of Android Studio apps and an improved Bluetooth pairing setup, but all of that will have to wait, and for good reason.

Pokémon Go gets easier and cheaper to play while you’re stuck at home

[ad_1]

In additio, Niantic has also launched a new feature called Today View that shows the latest things you should know about Pokémon Go. It displays the latest and upcoming events you can participate in, the Pokémon you have in gyms, as well as your spin and catch streaks.

Unfortunately, the company had to cancel Raid Hour and Lugia Raid Week, which was scheduled to begin today and would’ve given you the chance to catch the legendary diving Pokémon. You can, however, still get Cobalion as a Go Battle League reward until March 31st, 2020.

What’s on TV this week: ‘Ozark’ season three

[ad_1]

Another week at home, and at least there are a few worthy options to watch. After a lengthy gap, Netflix’s Ozark will pick up season three with the plot advanced six months from where we last visited the characters. On CBS All Access things are wrapping up for season one of Star Trek: Picard, and this week is also the season finale of Terriers 2, aka Stumptown.

One thing to keep an eye on for PS4 and Switch owners is the potential debut of Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. The classic game is supposed to debut in “early 2020” on the platforms, and briefly appeared on Sony’s official release list — we’ll see if it actually drops this week. Look after the break to check out each day’s highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

Dell Mobile Connect now transfers photos between your iPhone and PC

[ad_1]

Screen mirroring, meanwhile, is what you’d expect. You can see your iPhone’s screen on your PC and control it with your keyboard, mouse or (if you have one) touchscreen. That can be helpful if you want to catch up on an app that doesn’t have a web equivalent.

This improves parity between Android and iPhones in Mobile Connect. And as Windows Central pointed out, this makes Dell’s app a more viable option for iPhone owners than Microsoft’s Your Phone. So long as you’re content to stick with Dell PCs, you may not need more software to get some basic integration.
