Clinical trial will see if Apple devices can reduce the risk of strokes

[ad_1]

The study hinges on the early detection of atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is an irregular heart rhythm that causes poor blood flow and is a leading cause of stroke. While the link between atrial fibrillation and stroke is thoroughly understood, AFib has very few warning signs, making it difficult to diagnose until a stroke occurs. Johnson & Johnson and Apple are hoping that apps and the Apple Watch’s electrocardiogram (ECG) features will help detect AFib before a stroke occurs. This trial follows a Stanford study that found that the Apple Watch’s irregular heart rate monitoring features are accurate enough to use in a medical setting.

Since this is a virtual trial, participants don’t have to travel to a clinical trial site — they can partake remotely via a proprietary app. The Heartline study could help prevent strokes and deaths — AFib leads to 158,000 deaths per year — and could lead the way toward a new approach to clinical trials that leverage greater sample sizes and more consistent reporting. Those interested in participating can sign up at Heartline.com.

Amazon cuts the price of the 7-in-1 Ninja Foodi cooker to $125

[ad_1]

The Foodi’s functions include pressure cooking, air frying/air crisping, steaming, baking/roasting, slow cooking, yogurt making and searing/sauteing. With this beast, you can make pulled pork, homemade potato chips, baked mac and cheese and roasted veggies, even yogurt, all in the same machine and quickly. As Engadget’s Andy Tranatola discovered, the Ninja Foodi can be especially helpful when you’re preparing large, multi-course meals for friends and family.

At $125, the Ninja is a good deal. Though, it doesn’t come with the bells and whistles that some of its competitors have. It’s not Alexa-compatible like the latest Crock-Pot slow cooker, and it’s not branded like the Star Wars-themed Instant Pots that look like R2-D2, BB-8 and Darth Vader. If you do purchase the Ninja Food 7-in-1, be sure to check out our guide to making the most of your Instant Pot, as many of the functions that Instant Pot superfans swear by can be found in the Ninja.

Polestar’s latest concept EV is designed for sustainability

[ad_1]

The Precept also focuses heavily on eco-friendly design. The seat surfaces, bolsters, headrests and carpets are made out of recycled materials like 3D-knitted plastic bottles, cork vinyl and even recovered fishing nets. The interior panels and seatbacks, meanwhile, are made from flax-based composites that are not only kinder to the planet (80 percent less plastic waste), but lighter — they weigh half as much as conventional panels.

And yes, there’s plenty of technology on the inside. The Precept has a 12.5-inch driver display as well as a vertical 15-inch center touchscreen, and it uses a “next-generation” Android interface with improved Google Assistant voice control and the ability to watch videos while you’re charging. More importantly, it knows where your attention is. The interface uses eye tracking to adjust the interface based on where you’re looking, and proximity sensors both show more info and enlarge controls when you bring your hand close to the touchscreen.

The Precept will be on display at the Geneva International Motor Show starting on March 5th. You probably won’t see this exact car on the road, at least not in every country. US regulators aren’t keen on rear-view cameras, for example, while the rear view might also raise some concerns. And like most concepts, Polestar might have to tone down the design or features to make it road-ready. This is a fairly practical concept, though, and we wouldn’t be shocked if something similar hits the streets.

NASA says its InSight lander has detected over 450 ‘marsquakes’

[ad_1]

NASA has also revealed that the largest quake SEIS found was around magnitude 4.0 in size, which is milder than scientists expected. That’s not quite strong enough to get readings from the planet’s lower mantle and core, though, which scientists are hoping to get. InSight principal investigator Bruce Banerdt described those layers as the “the juiciest parts of the apple” when it comes to learning about the planet’s inner structure, which can help shed light on how rocky planets form.

Marsquakes, however, aren’t quite like earthquakes. The planet doesn’t have tectonic plates, and scientists believe its rumblings come from volcanically active regions and an internal cooling process that causes the core to contract and build stress. In fact, when InSight detected the first potential quake, NASA’s Planetary Science Division director Lori Glaze compared the event to a moonquake, which is typically weaker and much longer than earthquakes.

12 teraflops GPU with ray tracing, low latency controller tech and more.Microsoft starts to lock down Xbox Series X specs and features

Later this year, the next-gen game consoles will launch, and Microsoft kicked off the 2020 marketing push by confirming some things about Xbox Series X. SSD? Got that. Suspend and resume that works on multiple games at once? It’s in there. Can it automatically download the right version of a game, no matter which version of Xbox you originally purchased it for? Meet Smart Delivery, it’s handled. Oh, and third parties are getting into the buy-once-play-across generations party, too, with Cyberpunk 2077 jumping out as the first one to announce it will work that way.

We still don’t know minor details like hard drive capacity, what that mystery slot in leaked pictures is for or how much it will cost, but it has laid down a gauntlet. Sony, whenever you want to talk PS5 specifics, we’re ready to listen.

All the PCI Express, Afterburner and LR-DIMM details you can handle.Apple dives deep into specs for the Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR

Bringing home Apple’s professional-focused desktop computer and display won’t be cheap or easy, but you can get familiar with the details of both products for free. That’s thanks to two white paper documents Apple released Monday, listing pretty much anything you might want to know about their capabilities and compatibility. The papers cover everything from how Apple fights blooming on the Pro Display XDR to recommended Mac Pro configurations, so fans of the company’s hardware should set aside a few minutes to take a careful look.

No Google Play, no fun.Huawei reveals an iPad Pro rival that can wireless charge your smartphone

Huawei’s MWC package of announcements have happened without MWC happening. First up, a classy 10.8-inch tablet with companion M Pencil stylus and keyboard folio. There are cameras on both sides and as well as fast charging and wireless charging capability, the MatePad Pro (no marks for originality there) can wirelessly charge any phone. That’s pretty cool and useful. What isn’t is the lack of apps and Google services, yet again.

The hardware is very tempting, but the idea of getting elbows-deep with sideloading apps is not.

Tougher (sell).Huawei’s Mate Xs is another foldable phone, this time without Google Play

Alongside its new tablet, Huawei has given its foldable phone a little upgrade. A new processor with 5G built-in, a tougher hinge and more fraught future. Yep, as above, there are no Google apps again. Even if the phone will feel like any other Android phone, UI-wise, Huawei is still struggling to get its app game up to speed. Oh, it’s also an incredulous €2,499 (around $2,700).

You’ll be able to watch it starting on April 8th.Hulu will exclusively stream the Oscar-winning ‘Parasite’

Xbox One gets another simplified dashboard redesign

[ad_1]

Elsewhere, Conversations are (finally) getting support for images and animated GIFs, and images sent from the Xbox mobile app will now display on console, too. Game Pass members are getting extra controls over what content they download from larger bundle listings, and all players can now decide where their notifications appear on screen. Switch this up by going to Settings > Preferences > Notifications and clicking “Default notification position.”

Mixer has been given some viewing improvements — you can now switch chat mode to “classic chat,” which displays messages in their won dedicated space besides the video. You can also manually select the resolution you want to watch content on, and more easily navigate information about individual streamers.

Finally, Storage Management Suggestions has been given a tweak to accommodate external storage attached to consoles. Previously, if you ran out of space your Xbox One would make space-freeing suggestions based on the content taking up the most room on your hard drive. The update now introduces a “Move” option for those with external storage, giving you the choice to move or remove items in order to free up space.

Samsung’s new chips usher in smartphones with 16GB of DRAM

[ad_1]

On top of boosting the memory of upcoming smartphones, it’ll make them faster as well, thanks to the LPDDR5’s 5,500 Mbps (687.5 MB/s) speeds, about 30 percent quicker than 4,266 Mbps 8GB LPDDR4X chips. The chips also use 20 percent less energy than last-generation chips, Samsung said.

Samsung is making pretty quick strides, as it’s been just seven months since it launched 12GB LPDDR5 chips with similar speeds. 16GB represents quite a milestone for mobile chips, however. Even though they’re only likely to appear in flagship smartphones, the chips will boost RAM in those devices above or equal to many PCs, which have been stuck on 8GB to 16GB RAM levels for years.

Samsung said that the DRAM will help 5G- and AI-equipped phones deal with increased amounts of data, helping them run more smoothly. It’ll also support “dynamic and responsive game play as well as ultra-high-resolution graphics on premium smartphones for highly immersive mobile gaming experiences,” according to the company.

Next up, Samsung will build 16 Gb LPDDR5 chips based on third-generation 10-nanometer process tech that will hit even higher 6,400 Mbps speeds. This breakneck tech development doesn’t come cheap, however. Samsung’s Galaxy S20 ultra (above) is equipped with the latest 16GB chip and starts at $1,399 — more than most PCs.

Ultimate Ears’ Hyperboom speaker is a portable party powerhouse

[ad_1]

Based on its size alone, I expected the Hyperboom to deliver some massive sound — and it didn’t disappoint. Playing Led Zeppelin’s IV via Amazon Music’s HD codec was a near religious experience, with the sort of staging and presence I’d expect from my Pioneer Elite home theater towers. The Hyperboom handled the dynamic range in “Stairway to Heaven” like a champ, from the quiet opening guitar riffs to its explosive crescendo. Most importantly, it maintained that sound quality even when I pumped the volume up all the way. That was too loud for my Brooklyn apartment — my floors were shaking and my cats were freaking out — but ideal for throwing your own mini dance party in the park.

Ultimate Ears also came up with a smart solution to keep your party going when switching sources. The Hyperboom can connect to two Bluetooth devices at once — but crucially, it can also pair with a new device while continuing to play music from another. It even gently fades audio in and out as you switch between sources. You can also plug in any device into the speaker’s 3.5mm auxiliary jack, and you can get a pure digital connection to a TV or game console with an optical input. I didn’t expect to see optical in a party speaker, but it’s a useful addition, since it effectively makes the Hyperboom a high-quality portable soundbar for TVs.

Ultimate Ears Hyperboom

Ultimate Ears is competing with other pricey party speakers like JBL’s Party Box 300 ($450), but those also tend to be significantly heavier. That JBL speaker weighs a whopping 35 pounds, while one of our current favorites, the $999 Soundboks 2, clocks in at 32 pounds. So sure, the Hyperboom certainly looks imposing, but it’s far friendlier on your back. You’ll be able to pick one up at retailers in early March.
