Here’s everything Samsung announced at its Galaxy S20 event

[ad_1]

Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra

If you’ve been looking for more 5G support and improved camera performance, the Galaxy S20 series might be for you. The lineup includes three models (the 6.2-inch S20, 6.7-inch S20+ and the 6.9-inch S20 Ultra). Each will support “lightning fast 5G” — though Samsung will offer a 4G version in some countries.

The S20 has a triple camera setup on its rear, and the S20+ and S20 Ultra have an additional depth sensor. The cameras include a 12-megapixel “Ultra Wide” option with a 120-degree field of view, a 12MP sensor with a 79-degree field of view and f/1.8 aperature, plus a 64MP telephoto with an aperture of f/2.0. All three phones use a combination of 3x hybrid optic zoom and software to allow a 30x zoom on the S20 and S20+ and a 100x zoom on the Ultra.

The Galaxy S20 models feature panels that run at 120hz, at 1080p, and you can tweak the refresh rate to find a speed and resolution balance that works for you.

The phones will be available March 6th starting at $999. The S20+ will cost $1,199, and the S20 Ultra will set you back $1,399.

Galaxy Z Flip

Samsung’s next attempt at a foldable phone is the Galaxy Z Flip, which looks an awful lot like Motorola’s recently-revived Razr. The phone has a giant 6.7-inch screen when it’s open and a three-stop hinge, which allows it to open at three different angles, rather than open and closed.

The front-facing cameras has a 10MP with a f/2.4 aperture. On the back, you’ll find two cameras. The main wide-angle camera has a 12MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, optical image optical image stabilization, and up to 8X digital zoom. The second ultra wide-angle camera has another 12MP sensor with a f/2.2 aperture.

The Galaxy Z Flip will be available February 14th for $1,380, and Samsung says this time it used glass, rather than plastic, to protect the screen, so it shouldn’t run into the same problems the Galaxy Fold experienced.

Google Duo integration

Since users don’t just use their cameras for photos, Samsung is also taking steps to improve the video chat experience. It has partnered with Google to bring Duo video calls directly to the Samsung dialer. Users will simply tap Duo to start a video call in Full HD, with up to eight friends. Samsung said it’s bringing Duo to the Galaxy S20 phones first, which we hope means it might arrive on older devices eventually.

Galaxy Buds+

Samsung had already leaked everything you need to know about the Galaxy Buds+ ahead of today’s event. The biggest change is that the Galaxy Buds+ up the battery life from six hours to 11 hours. Supposedly, Samsung has made changes to audio quality, and it has added a Spotify button. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Buds+ still don’t have active noise cancellation (ANC).

The Buds+ will be available on February 14th in white, black, red and blue via Samsung’s website for $149.99. You can pre-order them now, and they’ll arrive at other retailers in March.

First Forza mobile game

Samsung will make the free-to-play racing game Forza Street available on its Galaxy devices. This is the first time a Forza game will be available outside of PC and Xbox, and it could help showcase the 120Hz refresh rate on the S20 phones.

Discounted Galaxy S10 series

Samsung’s former flagship phone, the S10 series, is already on sale. The S10e now costs $599, while the standard S10 is $749. If you want the larger S10+, that will cost you just $849. If you can live without the very latest hardware (including the S20’s larger screens and advanced cameras), these deals might be appealing.

The Galaxy S20+ vs. the competition: A bigger screen and more lenses

[ad_1]

Of the three Galaxy S phones introduced today, the middle “plus” edition is probably the one that most of you will end up buying. It’s got a quad camera setup, up to 512 GB of storage and an expansive 6.7-inch screen. But it’s not the only large flagship phone out there, especially now that Apple’s sized up with the Pro Max. We’ve lined up some of the more notable competition in a handy table for you, though you’ll have to wait for our full review to get the final verdict.

Samsung taps Thom Browne for special edition Galaxy Z Flip

[ad_1]

Alongside the three standard color variants of the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung plans to sell a special Thom Browne variant of its upcoming foldable display phone, the company announced at its Unpacked event in San Francisco. The phone features the designer’s signature red, white and blue strip down its center, but is otherwise silver.

And there are still other juicy tidbits to keep your eyes peeled for: The Galaxy Home mini might make its first official appearance here, and Samsung just might give us some hands-on time with the new Galaxy Z Flip. Here’s hoping that name isn’t final. If you’re itching for a little mobile industry inside baseball, we might also get some insight into the company’s scaled-back plans for MWC. (Then again, that might mainly be of interest to those of us at Engadget wondering if there will even be an MWC to visit in a few weeks.)

In any case, there’s lots to learn about and not much time until the event kicks off in earnest, so keep your browser locked here — the show starts at 11AM Pacific/2PM Eastern.

Nintendo will host Switch pop-up lounges in four US airports

[ad_1]

Travelers can purchase a Switch and some games while they’re at the pop-up, but oddly, customers can’t get their console on the same day and take them on their trip — Nintendo will ship the products to customers’ homes. Those who do order a Switch or Switch Lite, though, will get a free carrying case. Pop-up visitors will receive a free Nintendo-themed luggage handle wrap and a $10 Target coupon for any Nintendo purchase of $75 or more.

Nintendo will host its Switch pop-up lounges in Dulles International Airport, Tacoma International Airport, O’Hare International Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport from mid-February to late March. Some airports have gaming lounges, such as Gameway at Dallas Fort Worth, but a Nintendo pop-up lounge could be a more family-friendly take on the concept. Plus, Nintendo has the right idea of appealing to travelers who could be bored out of their minds on long flights — a Switch or Switch Light could keep passengers occupied for hours.

Virtual pet site Neopets is being rebooted into a TV show

[ad_1]

This is part of a larger overhaul for Neopets due this year that will include a reworked site, another mobile game and “licensed merchandise.”

Whether or not this works isn’t certain. The companies are quick to brag that Neopets still has 75 million users and 350 million page views per month, but that won’t necessarily translate to a readymade fan base. After all, many of the earliest players are likely parents — they might recognize the Neopets name, but that doesn’t mean their kids will be interested. It could still boost interest, but it’s certainly not guaranteed to have the same effect as the Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh shows.

All Nest accounts will require extra sign-in security this spring

[ad_1]

Nest still recommends that users migrate to Google accounts if they want to stay secure, although there is a caveat: you can’t currently link a Nest account if you have Google’s Advanced Protection turned on. Google is fixing this, but doesn’t have an estimate for when that solution will be ready.

It’s not hard to see why the Nest team would bolster its safeguards. The vulnerability of smart home systems has been a sore point for years, and it’s becoming more of an issue now that Nest and others have a host of connected alarms, cameras, doorbells and locks. An account takeover could compromise your privacy and even your physical safety. The additional hassle of two-factor sign-ins might be trivial compared to the fallout from a breach.

Spotify’s Kids app is coming to all Premium Family subscribers

[ad_1]

From today, anyone with a Spotify Premium Family subscription in the UK and Australia will be able to download the app for free onto any iOS or Android device. Kids can access a simplified and ad-free Spotify interface and listen to age-appropriate singalongs, soundtracks and stories, based on whether parents have selected “Audio for Younger Kids” or “Audio for Older Kids.” A global rollout will follow soon.

Also, if you’re a parent on Twitter, you’ve probably seen the viral Dinosaurs in Love track doing the rounds in recent times (which naturally now has its own video). The unfathomably bleak song — composed by singer Tom Rosenthal’s three-year-old daughter Fenn — tells the story of dinosaurs falling in love and subsequently being wiped out by the Big Bang. Well, that’ll be on the UK version of the Spotify Kids Music playlist from launch, as well as the worldwide Dinosaurs playlist. If you’ve been haunted by Baby Shark for the last year, it might serve as a welcome palate cleanser.
