NVIDIA will skip MWC 2020 due to concerns about coronavirus

[ad_1]

As the reported number of coronavirus infections in China grew beyond 34,000, NVIDIA announced that it will not send employees to the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain this year. According to the company, “Given public health risks around the coronavirus, ensuring the safety of our colleagues, partners and customers is our highest concern…We’ve been looking forward to sharing our work in AI, 5G and vRAN with the industry. We regret not attending, but believe this is the right decision.”

The list of organizations passing on MWC under the current circumstances now includes NIVIDIA along with Ericsson and LG. While Spain only confirmed its first case of the virus a week ago, some are deciding that without a vaccine and more information about the virus, which has killed more than 720 people, they’d rather stay home. MWC 2020 between February 24th and 27th, and the GSMA said in a statement that “It is of great importance to the GSMA to continue to convene the industry at this critical time where connectivity is on the cusp of a new industrial revolution. Advocating across the industry through government and ministers, policymakers, operators and industry leaders has never been more critical.”

‘The GSMA continues to monitor and assess the potential impact of the Coronavirus on MWC Barcelona 2020 as the health and safety of our exhibitors, attendees and staff are of paramount importance.”

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip hands-on clearly shows the tall foldable phone

[ad_1]

Open, its 22:9 aspect ratio is obvious, as the narrow-but-tall device has plenty of space. Overall it’s very similar to Motorola’s reborn Razr, but minus the massive chin. Pictures we’ve received reveal its model number will mark it as the SM-F700U, while earlier leaks have suggested specs including a a 6.7-inch, 2,636 x 1,080 screen, Snapdragon 855 Plus, 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.

It’s also supposed to use extra-thin glass instead of plastic for the screen, and hopefully that vertical hinge will be easier to manage than the Galaxy Fold was. Multiple leaks suggests that the hardware may be close to release and there have been rumors suggest it could go on sale in some regions by Valentine’s Day for about $1,400 — that’s pricey, but still less than the new Razr. Check back on Tuesday to find out more about when the Galaxy Z Flip will be available and for how much.

‘OurMine’ group briefly hijacked Facebook’s Twitter and Instagram accounts

[ad_1]

After Jack Dorsey’s account was taken over by hackers (more than once), social media account takeovers can’t get much bigger, but now Facebook itself has become a victim. The same “OurMine” hackers who sent messages from a bunch of NFL team accounts and @ESPN ahead of the Super Bowl apparently accessed Facebook’s accounts on Twitter and Instagram, as well as the official Twitter account for Facebook Messenger.

In a statement, Twitter confirmed they were accessed via third-party platform (apparently Khoros, the same way the NFL accounts were compromised) and that it had locked access to them. Last week Khoros said it had addressed a vulnerability in its platform after an attack and suspicious behavior, but it appears the OurMine group still has a way to use it for their own methods. For the rest of us, it’s probably a reminder to double check what third-party services you’ve allowed to access your account on Twitter and other platforms.

DOJ reportedly ends antitrust investigation over reducing car pollution

[ad_1]

Last year the Trump Administration sought to roll back the Obama Administration’s Clean Power Plan that pushed for higher fuel efficiency standards. It has also tried to stop states from like California from setting their own standards that exceed those of the federal government. Despite that, several automakers, including Ford, BMW, Volkswagen and Honda, voluntarily reached an agreement with the state of California on a slightly lower target.

That was quickly followed by word of a Department of Justice antitrust investigation into the move, however today the New York Times reports it has come to an end, finding that the companies didn’t break any laws by voluntarily agreeing to try to reduce the pollution created by their vehicles.

Microsoft’s revamped Edge browser now runs on ARM-based Windows PCs

[ad_1]

The new Edge (version 80) also supports Dolby Vision video playback and better handling for web apps in addition to the usual round of fixes and tweaks. It’ll roll out to Windows 10 users over the next few weeks, but we suspect you’ll want to grab it sooner if you’re using an ARM machine and aren’t completely attached to rival browsers like Chrome or Firefox.

Puma’s Sonic clothing line stays true to the original hedgehog

[ad_1]

The collection includes a bit of everything. One highlight is the $35 t-shirt pictured above, which features Sonic and Knuckles. Another shirt will remind friends and strangers that they’re too slow, and just as fresh are the pair of $120 RS-X3 sneakers you see below. They come in two different colorways: one in Sonic’s iconic blue, gold and whites, while the other looks like it takes its inspiration from Shadow. In a nice touch, the sneakers feature a scorecard toward the heel of the shoe.

You can buy items from the Puma x Sonic line starting today either online, at Puma stores or select retailers across the US. The kids’ portion of the line will follow on February 15th.

Antarctica is hotter than it’s ever been

[ad_1]

This isn’t necessarily surprising. Earth just saw its hottest January on record, and 2019 was the second-warmest year recorded. According to the World Meteorological Organization, the Antarctic Peninsula (the northwest tip near to South America) is among the fastest warming regions of the planet. Its temperature has increased almost 3 degrees Celsius (37.4 degrees Fahrenheit) over the last 50 years, and the amount of ice lost from the Antarctic ice sheet increased at least six-fold between 1979 and 2017.

Researchers do have to verify the measurement taken by the Argentinian research station thermometer, but they say “everything we have seen thus far indicates a likely legitimate record.”

This trend will likely continue, as researchers say the planet is warming faster than originally thought. Meanwhile, experts say climate change is wreaking havoc on Earth’s oceans and starving them of oxygen.

Trump’s next budget could give NASA a huge funding windfall

[ad_1]

The problem, of course, is that budgets need congressional approval — and there’s no guarantee the budget will go through Congress unaltered. A House subcommittee recently put forward a bill that would push the Moon landing to 2028 and shift the focus to a Mars orbital mission in 2033. And it wouldn’t be surprising to see politicians contend that those billions should go toward addressing lingering problems here on Earth rather than space missions with limited initial utility.

Should the budget go through, however, it would represent a considerably deeper commitment to Artemis than in the past. While some of the pieces are already falling into place, this would clearly make room for much more.

Apple may be testing Macs with AMD processors

[ad_1]

The references have prompted speculation that Apple may release Macs with AMD CPUs. At the moment, however, it’s far too early to make that jump. As MacRumors points out, there hasn’t been any corroborating evidence to suggest Apple plans to switch to AMD. In fact, if anything, it’s far more likely we’ll see Apple start to offer Macs which feature its own custom-designed chips. According to a Bloomberg report from 2018, Apple had planned to begin transitioning its laptops to ARM-based processors starting sometime this year.

More than anything, the testing likely speaks to how far AMD’s Ryzen chips have come in the past few years. In 2019, AMD’s desktop CPUs dominated Intel’s best chips, and PC manufacturers have recently started to turn to the company for their processor needs. This past fall, for instance, Microsoft launched a 15-inch model of the Surface Laptop 3 that features a custom Ryzen processor the company co-designed with AMD.

YouTube Music might finally let you upload your own music library

[ad_1]

This could also represent one of the last moves before Google Play Music shuts down. One of the tipsters indicated that Play Music could close “completely” in the second half of 2020. Google has long indicated that it would fold Google Play Music into YouTube Music once the main features were ported over, and that transition appears close at hand.

There’s no guarantee things will happen as reported. Google originally hoped to move users over in 2019, remember. It would be well-timed if it did, mind you. YouTube Music and YouTube Premium have a combined 20 million subscribers — that number will jump significantly if Google reels in Play Music converts, not to mention attracts those would-be customers who want access to their personal collections.
