Microsoft Flight Simulator patch fixes multiple installation issues

[ad_1]

  • The install process will no longer be blocked after a partial decompression of a package.

  • The install process will no longer be blocked when a local user account includes non-ASCII characters.

  • The install process will no longer be blocked after a failed connection to servers.

  • The install process will no longer display an empty onboarding screen under certain conditions.

  • The title will download a critical missing/deleted package to access the main menu even if the save data preference is set to offline (when an internet connection is available).

In addition, the game will no longer automatically download packages deleted by the content manager or get stuck in an infinite loading state when offline. Microsoft also patched several performance issues and updated the currency display in the marketplace.

Judging by Microsoft’s forums, a significant number of users have encountered one or more of the above problems. Our own Engadget editor Richard Lawler was blocked on installation when a data pack got corrupt, and Engadget Japan’s Ittousai was stymied by the non-ASCII character issue.

The problems can be particularly frustrating given the enormous size of the download and the space it can take up on your hard drive. If your installation has failed, developer Asobo Studio recommends that you uninstall any instances of the game in order to re-install it cleanly. You can find complete instructions for that in the patch notes.

Acer’s Spin 7 convertible will support sub-6 and mmwave 5G

[ad_1]

After a busy week of news, Acer isn’t quite done. The company has announced its Spin 7 convertible laptop, which is one of the first to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2. It supports both types of 5G, mmWave and sub-6, though it’s not the first notebook to do so.

On top of that, the Spin 7 has a 360-degree hinge, so you can use it in tablet mode if you prefer. Its touchscreen has a layer of Gorilla Glass for protection, and Acer claims the battery can run for up to 24 hours on a single charge. Acer hasn’t revealed pricing or availability just yet, but if you’re looking for a convertible laptop that can harness 5G, this could be just the ticket.

Apple will roll out ‘offer codes’ for app subscriptions with iOS 14

[ad_1]

Apple is making it much easier for developers to get new or win back old subscribers with discounts or free offers. The tech giant has announced that it’ll give developers access to a feature called Offer Codes, which it describes as “unique, alphanumeric codes that provide free or discounted prices for auto-renewable subscriptions.” Developers will be able to distribute the one-time codes online or offline — they can give them out via email blasts, for instance, or hand them out at events.

The company will allow new, existing and previous subscribers to redeem codes, depending on the customer eligibility the developer set. Customers can redeem only one code per offer, but they can have up to 10 active offers for their account at any single time. While the codes will give customers access to free or discounted subscriptions, giving app makers a way to drum up interest in their services will benefit Apple’s business in the long run. It takes a 30 percent cut for subscription sales in the first subscription year, after all, and a 15 percent commission for all successive years that the user remains a subscriber.

HTC CEO Yves Maitre resigns after less than a year

[ad_1]

During Maitre’s time at HTC, the company attempted to boost its VR presence by expanding its Vive Cosmos family of modular headsets, and it even teased its next-gen devices which are said to be more compact. This was followed by the launch of Vive XR Suite to focus its VR efforts on the business sector. The company also eventually released its first 5G smartphone, the U20.

Still, the former Orange executive was unable to turn the company around. Q2 2020 saw HTC’s ninth consecutive quarterly loss, which cost NT$1.83 billion (about US$62 million); and it was also a jump from the previous quarter’s NT$1.68 billion loss (US$57 million).

After a round of layoffs back in December, the company announced further action in June. Though according to sources close to the matter, the latest round of redundancies wasn’t even Maitre’s own doing.

As guests with VR headsets experience the events, they will be able to talk and interact with each other through the  platform VRChat. Samsung’s Galaxy Fit 2 can run for two weeks on a single charge

[ad_1]

When it comes to fitness trackers, consumers are spoiled for choice. Between devices from Fitbit, Garmin and now even Amazon, there’s probably a device out there suited for everyone, no matter their specific needs. But that same amount of choice can make it difficult for some trackers to stand out. Samsung’s Galaxy Fit is the perfect example. It’s a capable device that does a lot right, but it doesn’t have any features that make it more compelling than any other fitness tracker you can buy. For the Galaxy Fit 2, Samsung may have found a way to get consumers to notice the wearable.

Announced today at IFA Berlin, the highlight of the device is battery life. In normal circumstances, Samsung says you can get 15 days of use out of the wearable on a single charge. You can extend that amount to 21 days using specific settings. By comparison, you could get a week of battery life from the Galaxy Fit. That’s about what you can expect from most other fitness trackers too.

The Galaxy A42 could be Samsung’s cheapest 5G phone yet

[ad_1]

Samsung plans to release the A42 5G later this year. We don’t know how much it will cost or whether it will make its way to the US. But based on its model number, it will likely set you back less than either the A51 5G and A71 5G. Those two phones made their way stateside earlier this year, costing $500 and $600, respectively.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A7

Samsung

Samsung also announced the Galaxy Tab A7. Thankfully, the company was more forthcoming about its new tablet. It features a 10.4-inch display with an 80 percent screen-to-body ratio and four Dolby Atmos-capable speakers. The images of the tablet Samsung sent over show it will also include a headphone jack and what looks like a SIM slot. As with the A42 5G, Samsung didn’t say how much the tablet will cost, but the company did tell us it will make its way to the US. In any case, the Tab A7 should be an affordable alternative to the company’s new Tab S7 and S7+ tablets.

Free-to-play ‘Rocket League’ won’t need PS Plus or Switch Online plans

[ad_1]

The release of Rocket League’s massive gameplay redesign is mere weeks away and its developer, Psyonix, is sharing more details as to what gamers can expect once it does drop around mid-September. High on that list is the fact that neither Playstation or Switch owners will need to maintain an online subscription in order to play. Xbox Live Gold players, unfortunately, will.

Additionally, Rocket League is streamlining its various contests so that Rocket Pass and Tournament, Competitive Seasons all align with one another. Basically, Psyonix is setting things up so that timing for the start and end dates for Pass will align with the new Season — when Season 1 ends, so too will the current iteration of Pass. This way players will have a single, unified due-by date to track when earning rank.
