YouTube TV’s Live Guide now shows week-long schedules on desktop

[ad_1]

To access the guide, users simply have to go to the Live tab on desktop and scroll sideways to see the rest of the schedule they can’t initially see on screen. They can hover over a schedule card to see how long they still have to wait for a show to start and click on a card to see more details about a show, as well as add it to their library.

It’s still unclear if the new features are making their way to YouTube TV’s mobile and smart TV apps. (9to5Google notes, though, the some of its TV apps already have a similar interface.) Several of the service’s Twitter followers asked on the platform, but its social media manager only responded with “We can’t confirm that at this time but you’ll all be the first to know!”

What’s on TV this week: ‘The Mandalorian’ season finale

[ad_1]

The holiday is throwing a wrench in this week’s TV schedule, but no matter what, the highlight this week would be that other Star Wars finale. The Mandalorian is wrapping up its eight-episode run on Friday morning, and that might be the gift I’m looking forward to the most this week. Beyond the flagship Disney+ series, Netflix is bringing a second season of two highly-anticipated shows, You and Lost in Space. Also new this week is Ang Lee’s Gemini Man — you won’t get a 120fps copy, but at least you can own it at home in 4K and HDR.

There isn’t much new this week in the way of video games or Blu-ray releases, but sports fans can check out college bowl games and a full slate of NBA action on Christmas Day. Look after the break to check out each day’s highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

Ford’s next Focus RS may be a powerful hybrid

[ad_1]

Car suggested that hybrid tech for the rear wheels would not only provide better traction, but improve handling through smarter torque vectoring. It wouldn’t be the same as a conventional all-wheel drive system (where one powerplant drives all four wheels), but it would accomplish many of the same goals.

It’s not certain when the new Focus RS will be ready, assuming the report is accurate in the first place. The one certainty? It won’t come to the US. Ford is still committed to ditching most cars in the country, and the Focus RS is most definitely a car. Still, this could show how Ford handles performance hybrids going forward, whether they’re hatchbacks, SUVs or anything in between.

Pokémon games are available to play on Facebook

[ad_1]

Before you ask: there aren’t any in-app purchases, at least not at this stage.

The Pokémon Company isn’t shy about its goals with producing Facebook titles. This is about making Pokémon games available to “people all over the world” who otherwise couldn’t (or wouldn’t) play. For Facebook, meanwhile, this is a big boost to an Instant Games platform that only has so many big titles under its belt. You certainly won’t put down your Switch in favor of these games, but they could give you a reason to check out Facebook Gaming where you might otherwise ignore it.

GameStop’s $250 1TB Xbox One X deal is as cheap as 4K gaming gets

[ad_1]

Looking for a console upgrade before the Xbox Series X hits shelves? You may have some time left to get a 1TB Xbox One X for as cheap as a price as we’ve seen. GameStop is offering last year’s 2K19 console bundle for just $250, while the store’s Game Days promotion throws in a second controller for free. That gets everything you need for some 4K HDR gaming as well as Ultra HD Blu-ray capability with the most power available until the new consoles arrive late next year. A year-old copy of NBA 2K isn’t particularly attractive as a pack-in, but at this price you should have plenty left over for a Game Pass subscription or a few of the top Xbox One games available.

If it’s still available at a local store you might be able to pick one up today, but if not you’ll have to hope it’s still in stock online — shoppers have reported seeing it flicker between available and sold out.

Judge strikes down NYC law limiting Uber and Lyft driver cruising time

[ad_1]

Had the law gone into effect, it would have limited the amount of time Uber and Lyft drivers could spend searching for passengers in Manhattan south of 96th Street to 31 percent of their overall drive time, down from 41 percent. When it passed the rule this summer, the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission said it was an attempt to reduce traffic congestion in New York’s busiest borough where cars driven by Uber and Lyft contractors, along with yellow cabs, can make up as much of 50 percent of traffic.

When Uber challenged the law in September, it said it would threaten the livelihood and flexibility of drivers. In advance of the law going into effect in February 2020, both Uber and Lyft had limited access to their apps, locking local drivers out at certain times and areas of the city. In his ruling, New York State Supreme Court judge Lyle Frank criticized the city for its 31 percent target, saying it provided “scant rationale” for it.

“Uber remains committed to fighting for driver flexibility in the face of politically motivated regulations and to stand up for policies that actually combat congestion,” the company said in a statement to Reuters. We’ve reached out to the company for more information.

“The court’s decision confirms that the TLC took a rushed, arbitrary approach to developing this rule and created bad public policy. We look forward to working with state and city leaders to address New York City’s transportation challenges with the only true solution to congestion: comprehensive congestion pricing,” a spokesperson for Lyft told Engadget. The city hasn’t issued a statement on the ruling yet.

While both Uber and Lyft are sure to be happy about the ruling, the former is likely especially thankful. Last week, a German court effectively banned the company’s ride-hailing service in the country.

Tesla’s Holiday Update improves Camp Mode and driving visualization

[ad_1]

In the tweeted words of Elon Musk, “big batteries rock.” With all the extra power, it makes sense that EV owners might want to use some for camping accessories and comfort. Tesla isn’t alone in this thinking. Earlier this year, Rivian added a camp stove add-on to its electric truck. Nissan has a slightly different approach: recycling some of its EV batteries by giving them a second life in campers.

Elon Musk teased Camp Mode more than a year ago, and Tesla has offered a watered-down version since 2017. Though, that only kept the climate system on while you were in the car. According to Electrek, using the new and improved Camp Mode is as easy as tapping the fan icon on the bottom of the touchscreen, selecting ‘Keep Climate On’ and tapping ‘CAMP.’ If you’re really feeling adventurous, maybe you’ll spring for one of Tesla’s electric Cyberquad ATVs as well.

The “holiday update,” which Musk hinted at last week, does include a “Full Self-Driving” preview as promised, but it’s limited. The new feature is essentially improved sign reading capabilities. The driving visualization system can now display additional objects like stop lights, stop signs and select road markings. You’ll also be able to view text messages as cards and read and respond to them using voice commands.

Twitter blocks animated PNGs after trolls used them to trigger seizures

[ad_1]

“We want everyone to have a safe experience on Twitter,” the company said in a tweet. “APNGs were fun, but they don’t respect autoplay settings, so we’re removing the ability to add them to tweets. This is for the safety of people with sensitivity to motion and flashing imagery, including those with epilepsy.” Twitter also said APNGs used up a lot of data, and could in some circumstances cause app crashes.

To be clear: you’ll still be able to add animated images to your tweets, you’ll just need to fall back on GIFs. Since most people already use GIFs as their go-to for sharing clips and reactions, the update is unlikely to change how the majority use the platform.

To make up for the loss of the added functionality that comes with APNGs, Twitter says it’s working on adding alt-text to GIFs, which will help make them more accessible to people who depend on screen readers to navigate the internet. It’s also looking into building a similar feature that’s “better for you and your Twitter experience.

The move probably won’t make Twitter completely safe for photo-sensitive individuals since trolls have used GIFs in the past to try and harm people. However, the fact that APNGs were able to bypass the site’s autoplay protections made them particularly susceptible to abuse.

Believe it or not, the Wii U is getting a ‘new’ game

[ad_1]

The listing was first spotted by Kotaku, and is interesting for a couple of reasons. To start, Drop It: Block Paradise first came out in 2017. If that weren’t strange enough, it’s been available on the Wii U in Europe, but not North America, since that same year as well. For whatever reason, Drop It: Block Paradise is only now making its way to the US eShop.

According to Wikipedia, a couple of other games came out on the Wii U this year, but there’s nothing on the list that really stands out. You never want to say never, but it’s likely Drop It: Block Paradise will go down, at least in North America, as the Wii U’s final release.

Of course, as far as most people are concerned, the Wii U effectively died in 2017. That year, Nintendo stopped manufacturing the console and released The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, its last first-party title for the system. Everything that’s come afterward has been delaying the inevitable — but surprisingly enough, the Wii U appears to only be mostly dead.
