'Dishonored' and 'Prey' co-creators reveal 'Weird West'

[ad_1]

Weird West doesn't look as strange as it does stylish. The game comes from WolfEye Studios, whose co-founders include Dishonored and Prey veterans Julien Roby and Raphael Colantonio, and it's being billed as an immersive sim set in a dark fantasy rei…

‘Ultimate Rivals: The Rink’ is an old-school hockey game with a twist

[ad_1]

The first entry, Ultimate Rivals: The Rink, is a hockey game that lets you play as over 50 athletes across the NHL, NBA, MLB, NFL Players Association, WNBA and the US Women’s Soccer Team. And if that’s not wild enough, you can also bring in retired legends like Wayne Gretsky. If hockey’s not your style, there’s also an NBA-licensed basketball title, Ultimate Rivals: The Court, coming in the spring.

Clearly, this isn’t a franchise meant for purists. Instead, Bit Fry is aiming to replicate the “pick up and play” aspect of those classic sports games. While playing a bit of The Rink over an Apple TV 4K, I was surprised how easily I was able to jump in and skate circles around my opponents. You can also place athletes into any position (the devs looked at each player’s equivalent skill to judge their abilities for hockey). My starting team included soccer player Alex Morgan, who seemed just as at home on the ice as she does on the field.

‘Fortnite’ adds a Rey skin, TIE fighter and more ‘Star Wars’ goodies

[ad_1]

Fortnite and Star Wars are two of the largest entertainment brands the world over, so of course they’re being mashed together, repackaged and sold all over again to hungry fans. Fortnite now has Rey, Finn and Sith trooper skins, plus a First Order TIE Fighter glider. There’s also a Star Wars emote and banner (for gifting only), but those feel a bit underwhelming after the TIE Fighter news.

Samuel L. Jackson has arrived on Alexa devices

[ad_1]

There’s a bunch of other things you can ask SLJ, as well, such as what it was like making Star Wars and where his favorite vacation spot it. You can ask him to tell jokes, to sing jingle bells and to grant your lifelong wish that he’d wish you a Merry Christmas. If your kids are misbehaving, you can ask Mr. Jackson to tell them to go to bed, as well — they may not listen to you, but we’ll bet they’ll listen to Nick Fury. And if you’ve always wondered which among his memorable movie lines is his absolute favorite — if it’s the one asking where his super suit is or if it’s the one cursing those pesky snakes on a plane — then you can ask the man himself as well.

Apple TV+ will drop every episode of ‘Little America’ on January 17th

[ad_1]

Little America, the anthology series based on true stories about immigrants in the US, arrives on Apple TV+ on January 17th. Apple will release all of season one’s episodes at once, rather than weekly as it’s done with other shows, and more than a month before Little America’s debut, Apple has already committed to a second season.

Spotify will recommend podcasts even if you’ve never listened before

[ad_1]

The feature is available to free users in the US, Canada, Great Britain, Brazil, Germany, Sweden, Australia, Mexico, Ireland and New Zealand.

It’s not surprising to see Spotify continue adding new podcasting hooks to its app. In just this past year, the company made it so that you could add podcast episodes to playlists, created a daily playlist that surfaces new recommendations, and, most significantly, redesigned its mobile app to give more prominence to the format. It’s all with an eye towards future profitability. According to a 2018 IAB study, podcast advertising revenue in the US alone will likely increase to $659 million by next year. The company also has to make good on the Anchor and Gimlet Media acquisitions (among others) it made earlier this year. If anything, we’ll likely see even more podcasting-related features make their way to the app throughout 2020.

And if you’re looking for new material, The Engadget Podcast is now available on Spotify — with new episodes weekly.

Wirecutter’s best deals: Save $20 on a Tile Essentials Bluetooth tracker bundle

[ad_1]

Tile Essentials (2020) Bundle

Tile Essentials (2020) Bundle

Street price: $70; deal price: $50

Available for $50, this is a great chance to pick up a great starter bundle featuring three of our Bluetooth tracker picks at a discount. We saw this deal a few days ago for the same price—it consists of 1 Mate, 1 Slim, and 2 Stickers. We like the 2020 updated models for their increased Bluetooth ranges, now up to 200 feet. This sale price is slated to end after today, 12/12, so take advantage of it while it lasts.

The Tile Mate, Tile Slim, and Tile Stickers are our picks in our guide to the best Bluetooth tracker to keep your belongings in order. Wirecutter Senior Staff Writer Nick Guy wrote, “If you’ve bought into the Tile ecosystem, you may want to tag more of your stuff than just your keys. The Tile Slim (2020) and Tile Sticker (2020) use the same technology as the Tile Mate, but in different styles that can be useful in a variety of situations.”

Maz-Tek Plug-in LED Night-Light

Maz-Tek Plug-in LED Night-LightStreet price: $13; deal price: $10 w/ on-page coupon

If you’re looking for a night-light for your home, the Maz-Tek Plug-in LED is available in Warm White for just under $10 when you clip the on-page coupon. Our night-light pick for decorating a comfortable, cozy guest bedroom, this light emits a nice glow, perfect for illuminating an unfamiliar space for guests; it’s also very affordable at street price, so this discount sweetens the deal.

The Maz-Tek Plug-in is our night-light pick in our cozy guest bedroom guide. Wirecutter Staff Writer Alex Arpaia wrote, “Groggy or jet-lagged adults and kids alike will appreciate a night-light to illuminate their path in an unfamiliar space,” and that “the affordable Maz-Tek night-light comes in a pack of two and automatically turns on when the room darkens. But its slim profile and attractive design are what set it apart.”

Logitech G502 Hero – Special Edition

Logitech G502 Hero - Special Edition

Street price: $52; deal price: $30

If you like this special edition color design, this is a great deal on the Logitech G502 Hero that blows previous deals we’ve seen out of the water. $12 less than any discounts we’ve seen in the past, this is a great chance to pick up a gaming mouse with more weight and more mappable buttons.

The optional weights pick in our guide to the best wired gaming mouse, the Logitech G502 Hero stands out from our other picks because of its customizability. Wirecutter Editor Thorin Klosowski wrote, “The Logitech G502 Hero divided our test panel. Three of the panelists loved it and praised its comfort, button positioning, and its best-in-class scroll wheel. But it isn’t as comfortable for as many hand sizes and grips as our main pick—our small-handed palm-grip testers couldn’t easily reach every button. The G502 has 11 buttons, four more than the DeathAdder, and offers adjustable weights, unlike the DeathAdder. The sensor can track up to 16,000 DPI. But the software is a bit quirkier and the lighting is less customizable than the DeathAdder’s.”

Monolith M565C Headphones by Monoprice

monolith headphones

Street price: $200; deal price: $160

Down to $160, this is a great price on the Monolith M565C Headphones that match the all-time low we’ve previously posted. These headphones offer price-defying performance, even at full price. We don’t see too many deals on this pick, so if you’re in the market for some new headphones from Monoprice for yourself (or as a gift), the time to buy is now.

In our guide to the best everyday audiophile headphones, the Monolith M565C Headphones by Monoprice are our top pick. Wirecutter Senior Staff Writer Lauren Dragan wrote, “First things first: the Monolith by Monoprice M565C headphones are really a joy to listen to. The sound is boosted in both the high and low frequencies more than is technically considered neutral, but the effect is clear highs supported by a foundation of deep, rich lows. A lot of similarly tuned headphones muddy the lows or make highs so jagged as to become painful. But the 565C model avoids piercing, sizzling, or blurred sound. This tuning also lends to a larger sonic depth of field than one would expect at this price, which is especially noticeable in concert-performed classical music or other live-recorded music.”

Because great deals don’t just happen on Thursday, sign up for our daily deals email and we’ll send you the best deals we find every weekday. Also, deals change all the time, and some of these may have expired. To see an updated list of current deals, please go here.

Lyft debuts car rentals in Los Angeles and the SF Bay Area

[ad_1]

The allure is fairly self-evident: you can rent a car from the same app you’d use to hail a ride or grab a bike, and you don’t have to stress about visiting a rental counter or driving limits.

For Lyft, this is part of both a larger effort to cover many forms of transportation and shore up its bottom line. It has long wanted to be your go-to provider no matter how you want to ride. And when Lyft expects to see its steepest losses this year, it needs options like car rentals to boost revenue and (eventually) turn a profit.

Most Cadillacs will be electric by 2030, says GM

[ad_1]

The head of GM’s Cadillac brand made that pledge today, Reuters reports. Though, Cadillac President Steve Carlisle noted that Cadillac could continue of offer internal combustion versions alongside EVs if there’s demand. He also said Cadillac will offer a large electric SUV similar to the Escalade.

Cadillac has made a few hybrid attempts, like the CT6 Plug-In, and early this year it released a teaser photo of its first fully-electric vehicle. While Cadillac doesn’t have much to show yet, GM has made Cadillac its ‘lead’ EV brand — GM is also working on electric trucks.

Some other brands have set more near-term goals. By 2025, every Toyota and Lexus will have an electrified option, and that same year, Volvo wants half of its sales to be fully electric.

Hulu rewards binge watchers with ad-free episodes

[ad_1]

Only a handful of advertisers have signed on to start, including Georgia-Pacific, Kellogg’s and Maker’s Mark, although Hulu is clearly hoping for more.

The ad strategy reflects practical reality, if you ask Hulu. Nearly half of its ad-supported viewing hours are spent in binge watching sessions — why not take advantage of that? The perks for your third consecutive episode could encourage you to watch more of a given show and not only see more ads, but build hype for any future seasons. Of course, it should be noted that this generally won’t be an issue with Hulu’s ad-free tier. This is really about making ads more palatable for customers who’d rather not pay $12 per month (or use an ad-free service like Netflix) to avoid commercials.
