Google’s 2019 search trends mark a big year for Baby Yoda and ‘Endgame’

[ad_1]

On top of that, Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel were the top two movie searches, with two more Disney titles (Toy Story 4 and The Lion King) in fourth and fifth place. The Joker rounded out the top five in third place.

Like last year, searchers were also interested in learning bout celebrity deaths, particularly rapper Nipsey Hussle and actor Cameron Boyce. (Boyce died from a medical condition, while Hussle was fatally shot in March in Los Angeles.) Fans also wanted to know about actor Jussie Smollet, who was accused of faking a hate crime in February.

GLOBAL-DECADE/

Other top search terms included the iPhone 11, Hurricane Dorian and the Notre Dame Cathedral in the news category, with the most searched athletes being Antonio Brown and Bryce Harper. Old Town Road, 7 Rings and Shallow were the most popular songs and folks really wanted to know “What is Area 51,” “What is a VSCO girl” and “What is a boomer.”

As it’s the end of the ’10s (yep) Google also went back in time to detail the top searches in 2010. At that point, The Walking Dead was still culturally relevant, while Toy Story 3 and Iron Man 2 topped the movie search charts, showing how long Disney’s been on top. Leading song searches included Pants on the Ground by American Idol legend Larry Platt, Rhianna’s Love the Way You Lie and Teenage Dream by Katy Perry.

Finally, Justin Bieber was hot for his My World 2.0 studio album (and in 2019 for marrying Hailey Baldwin), while Toy Story 4‘s Betty White became the oldest person to host Saturday Night Live. That was also the year Lebron James announced on live TV that he was joining the Miami Heat. A lot has happened to James in between, but he’s still one of the most highly searched athletes of 2019. For more, check out Google’s 2019 year in search and decade in search.

Chevy’s 2021 Tahoe and Suburban add OTA updates and big screens

[ad_1]

2021 Chevrolet Suburban

We’ll focus on the tech inside these trucks though, which starts with a 10-inch color infotainment system up front that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Higher end trim levels have an 8-inch screen in the instrument cluster, and there’s even an available 15-inch Heads-Up Display, standard on the High Country edition and available on Premier SUVs that even has a small 3×7-inch color display.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

For folks in the back, an available rear seat entertainment option adds two 12.6-inch LCDs. They have independent HDMI connections to view different things at the same time, plus they have the ability to mirror Android phones, send content from one to the other, or allow riders to pick out spots on the map and send them to the navigation system up front. There’s also a bunch of USB ports and on most models, wireless chargers with charger cooling.

Safety and driver assist tech in these SUVs will include an HD rear vision camera that puts video right in the rearview mirror, automatic emergency braking and HD surround vision. There’s no word on pricing yet, but the new Tahoe and Suburban will go on sale in mid-2020.

The Pirate Bay is testing pirate streaming again

[ad_1]

With a solid connection, it appears to work well and delivers the same quality as the torrent you selected. According to the site, the maximum possible download size is limited to 20GB. It’s not clear whether The Pirate Bay or a third party runs the site, though Torrent Freak observed that it has a “Kopimi” logo, suggesting it’s a supporter of the pirate movement.

The Pirate Bay has tried streaming before with its Torrents Time site that also allowed in-browser streaming, but it dropped the idea quite a while back. A file-sharing site called BayFiles was shut down after a police raid in Sweden, but it recently relaunched.

Series that are exclusive to a particular streaming network are particularly popular on torrent sites, with Game of Thrones being the most pirated show ever. The Mandalorian fits that bill too, and The Pirate Bay’s new “service” will make it a tempting target for users and probably entertainment industry lawyers as well. If you decide to try BayStream, you’ll need a popular torrent with plenty of seeds and a willingness to break the law

Google reportedly facing a DOJ probe over its $2.1 billion Fitbit purchase

[ad_1]

Watchdog organizations like the Center for Digital Democracy, Public Citizen and Consumer Action have been urging regulators to block the merger. “If this acquisition is approved,” they wrote in a letter (PDF) to the FTC, “Google will further consolidate its monopoly power over Internet-based services.” They warned that Google already knows more about consumers than any other company through its extensive portfolio of internet services and should not be allowed to add one more to the list.

They added: “Google already holds a dominant position in the digital marketplace, health data is critical to the future of that marketplace, and the data protection concerns stemming from the acquisition will have far-reaching consequences including a dramatic erosion of consumer privacy.”

We’ve reached out to Google for a statement. When the deal was announced, though, the tech giant said Fitbit users’ health and wellness data will not be used for advertisements.

LG’s 2020 Gram laptops add 10th-gen Ice Lake CPUs

[ad_1]

The new laptops are powered by 10th Generation Intel Core processors with Iris Plus graphics and up to 24GB of dual-channel DDR4 RAM. LG says they have double the graphics processing power of this year’s models and could help ensure that games and resource-intensive apps like video editors will run smoothly.

The updated devices also support WiFi 6, the next-gen WiFi standard that promises faster speeds and better energy efficiency than its predecessors’. And to make sure the 17-inch and 15-inch Grams can support their upgraded components, LG fitted them with larger batteries — 80Wh, as opposed to 72Wh like previous models had.

The 17-inch Gram has a Wide Quad Extended Graphics Array (WQXGA) IPS display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, while the rest boast Full HD screens with the more common 16:9 aspect ratio. Meanwhile, the 2-in-1 model for 2020 comes with a Thunderbolt 3 connection its predecessor didn’t have and can apparently keep running for over 20 hours. LG hasn’t revealed a release date for the new lineup yet, but it will showcase the devices at CES 2020 from January 7th to 10th.

Yubico’s authenticator app now supports NFC for iOS devices

[ad_1]

When Yubico released its Authenticator app for iOS, it only worked with the YubiKey 5Ci, a model that can be plugged in via the Lightning port. This update means you can also use the YubiKey 5 NFC with the authenticator to sign into apps and services simply by tapping the key at the top of an iPhone 7 or later.

Yubico says using its key-and-app combination is more secure than using a 2FA authenticator alone, because its generates and stores one-time codes on a YubiKey that you must have on you to log in. “This not only eliminates security vulnerabilities associated with a multi-purpose computing device, but also offers an added layer of convenience for users that work between various machines,” the company said in its announcement.

Here’s a peek at how Yubico Authenticator’s NFC support works:

$35 off coupon makes Google’s Titan security keys almost free

[ad_1]

Whether you use Android or iOS, a hardware security key can provide even more protection against password theft or phishing. It’s even more secure than other forms of multifactor authentication, because the site you’re logging into has to verify itself to the security key too, which can help protect you against increasingly-tricky phishing attacks.

Now, on the same day that Apple increased support for security keys on iOS 13.3, Google has kicked off a sale on its Titan security keys that makes them cheaper than we’ve ever seen before. Using the code “B-TITAN35OFF” can take up to $35 off of a purchase of security keys, so you can snag the wireless-equipped key that connects over USB, Bluetooth or NFC for just $3.99 (the price of shipping), instead of $35, or a pair of keys that adds a USB unit, at just under $20 instead of $50 plus shipping.

It even appears that the code will work on multiple orders, so you could order them separately and use the discount on each one. Looking for the USB-C key that Google teamed with Yubico on? Apply the coupon code and it can be yours for a total of $9.29.

Paul McCartney’s adventure novel for kids is becoming a Netflix movie

[ad_1]

Not surprisingly, McCartney isn’t just there to give his seal of approval. He’s one of the co-producers alongside veterans like Bob Shaye (of Lord of the Rings and Golden Compass fame), and he’ll also write original songs. There’s top talent beyond this as well. The screenplay comes from Fantastic Beasts and Paddington alumni Jon Croker, while Head Over Heels creator Timothy Reckart is directing.

It’s too early for casting or a release date. This is bound to be one of Netflix’s highest-profile titles for kids, though. McCartney is an obvious draw (more for the parents than the kids), but it’s also an adaptation of a popular book. We’d add that High in the Clouds may be better-suited to movies than many other novels. McCartney originally intended the story as a movie, so it’s only fitting that it comes full circle.

Logitech made a $200 webcam for Apple’s $5,000 pro display

[ad_1]

The webcam is capped at 30 frames per second when you’re using the full 4K resolution, but Logitech touts automatic light adjustment with HDR as well as tilt adjustment. You should be properly exposed and in-frame even in a dimly-lit production studio. You can also expect dual noise-cancelling mics. And no, you don’t need a Mac Pro to use it — it’ll technically work with other Macs, if not as elegantly.

The 4K Pro Magnetic Webcam is available now through the Logitech and Apple websites for $200. That’s a lot for a webcam (even the C930e is $130), but something tells us Logitech isn’t concerned. If you or your employer can afford a Pro Display XDR, the cost of this webcam is chump change.

Co-operative horror shooter ‘GTFO’ hits Steam Early Access

[ad_1]

Besides the tonal similarities to the Alien franchise (there’s a firearm that includes a radar module, allowing you to spot enemies before they detect you), a key selling point of GTFO is a gameplay mechanic called the “Rundown.” Essentially, each time you play the game, developer 10 Chambers claims the experience will be slightly different. That’s because the studio plans to continually tweak the maps and objectives it puts you and your friends through. It also appears there will be some procedurally-generated elements to ensure no two play sessions are exactly the same.

You can currently buy GTFO on Steam for $31.49. Just note that the developer warns its game isn’t for the faint of heart. “GTFO is seriously hard, you need dedication and teamwork to survive!” it says on the game’s Steam page. “This is not a run and gun game, please watch a stream or a YouTube clip so you know what you are getting into.”
