OnePlus adds Netflix to its TVs

[ad_1]

The new remote will fix a few other issues. The original was remarkably similar to Apple’s TV remote, but in an attempt to be sleek, OnePlus didn’t include a mute button. Instead, users had to press both volume buttons at once. The new remote will be thicker, made of plastic (rather than metal), run on AAA batteries and include dedicated mute and Netflix buttons, says Android Police. In other words, OnePlus is no longer trying to imitate Apple’s less-than-perfect remote design.

The TVs are still only available in India, but it’s interesting to see how they’re developing ahead of what we can only assume will be a wider release. Both the OnePlus TV Q1 and Q1 Pro are 55-inch 4K QLED panels with support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+. They started at INR 69,000 ($972) and INR 99,900 ($1407) respectively.

Louis Vuitton’s ‘League of Legends’ biker jacket can be yours for $5,650

[ad_1]

Louis Vuitton

All of the apparel and accessories (there’s a $515 keychain and bag charm) combine the iconic LV pattern with the brand’s take on a League of Legends color palette. Several items have a tiger-stripe design. As Polygon points out, there isn’t a direct connection between the pattern and the game, but it gives the line a consistent feel.

Louis Vuitton

As we’ve noted before, this isn’t an entirely surprising collaboration. It could help both Riot Games and Louis Vuitton reach audiences they wouldn’t otherwise. Louis Vuitton already makes apparel for traditional sports, like its FIFA line, and now that eSports have gone mainstream, this isn’t a huge leap. The prices might seem high to the uninitiated, but they’re in line with the price of other Louis Vuitton goods, and clearly, there’s a market for those.

First ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ trailer entrusts Ecto-1 to Egon’s grandkids

[ad_1]

Ghostbusters: Afterlife looks very different from the original two movies. In fact, there are some elements of the film that are completely opposite from the Ghostbusters formula: Kids appear to be the protagonists instead of adults, and the film takes place in a rural area rather than a major city. The movie also seems like more of an adventure flick than a comedy. The lack of the series’ famous theme song is almost jarring. In other words, it’s clear that Afterlife isn’t a rehash of the first two movies.

While Harold Ramis, who played Egon Spangler, died in 2014, most of the main cast from the original movies is slated to reprise their roles. So while Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts don’t appear in the trailer, expect to see the old guard make a cameo at the very least.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will hit theaters on July 10, 2020. If you need your fix sooner, a remaster of the 2009 Ghostbusters video game is available on the Xbox One, PS4 and Switch.

Pixel 4 will automatically screen robocalls and center your Duo videos

[ad_1]

The Pixel 4 will automatically screen robocalls using Call Screen. The feature will silently filter out junk calls. If it’s not spam, you’ll get a description of who’s calling and why, so you can decide whether you want to answer. Because Call Screen works on the device, it won’t use Wi-Fi or data.

Google

Google is making a few changes to Duo calls, too. On the Pixel 4, Duo will keep you centered in the video frame as you chat. If another person joins you, the frame will automatically adjust to fit them in. If the connection is spotty, a machine learning model on the Pixel 4 will fill in the gaps, guessing which sound was cut out and filling it in, and to reduce video choppiness, Smooth Display will refresh up to 90 times per second.

Google

Pixel 2, 3 and 4 models will also get a portrait filter in Duo, which will blur the background slightly to make you look sharper. You’ll be able to apply a similar filter to photos, too. Whether you just took the picture or snapped it years ago, Pixel owners can now add the Portrait Blur in the Google Photos app.

The features are already rolling out, and they should arrive on Pixel devices in the coming weeks. Google plans to make feature drops a regular occurrence, but we don’t know what other changes are in the pipeline.

‘Twin Peaks VR’ trailer offers a dive into David Lynch’s mind

[ad_1]

As mentioned before, you’ll need a PC, Steam and an HTC- or Oculus-made headset. Versions for the Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR are due in the future, though, in case you’d prefer to experience Lynchian oddities in your living room.

Don’t expect this to be a full-fledged game. You can find Easter eggs and “discover hidden secrets,” but this is more of a guided tour through iconic places in the Twin Peaks universe than anything else. That might be more than enough if you’re a devotee, though, and it’s just a question of whether or not the full title can come close to replicating the atmosphere of the show.

Mercedes and Bosch commence self-driving trials in San Jose

[ad_1]

The busy San Carlos/Stevens Creek corridor between west San Jose and downtown should be good test for the self-driving tech used by Mercedes and Bosch. Rather than just playing with prototypes, the companies want to create a production-ready SAE Level 4/5 self-driving system that can be built into different makes and models. To do that, they’re using a combination of AI, a million-square foot proving ground in Stuttgart and the real world San Jose ride-hailing tests.

San Jose is expected to grow by 40 percent over the next two years, so the city wants to see the impact of autonomous cars. “We want to know more about how automated vehicles can help improve safety and reduce congestion, as well as make mobility more available, sustainable, and inclusive,” said San Jose project director Dolan Beckel in a statement. “If automated driving is to become everyday reality, the technology has to work reliably and safely.”

The Morning After: Jeff Bezos wants Amazon to do more business with the Pentagon

[ad_1]

He wants Amazon to do more business with the Pentagon.
Bezos: US is in ‘big trouble’ if Big Tech rejects military contracts

Don’t expect Amazon to follow companies like Google in changing its mind on military contracts. And that’s coming from the boss. Jeff Bezos told guests at the Reagan National Defense Forum over the weekend that the US is in big trouble if large tech companies are “turning their back” on the Defense Department. He further argued that Americans were “the good guys,” and that it was imperative that the US maintained advantages over rivals in areas like spaceflight, where China appeared to be catching up.

The tech pioneer isn’t uniformly supportive of the government, and Amazon has accused the Defense Department of handing the JEDI contract to Microsoft due to President Trump’s avowed anti-Amazon bias.

Most features will stick around if you’re using WiFi.
Tesla will start charging $10 per month for ‘Premium’ in-car data

Tesla owners have finally been asked to cough up after they were told that the company would start charging for some in-car data way back last year. The automaker is notifying customers who ordered on or after July 1st, 2018 that it’s switching them to 30-day trials of Premium Connectivity (i.e. the full data services they’re used to), and that they’ll have to subscribe for $10 per month to keep using the functionality. Anyone who ordered before July 1st, 2018 still has access to all features for free.

It might not be quite as bad as it sounds. The only features you’ll never have access to in the basic tier are satellite maps and live traffic visualizations. Media streaming, web browsing and Caraoke are still available — you’ll just need to be connected to WiFi to use them.

Caveats, naturally.
OnePlus may return to low-cost phones with the 8 Lite

OnePlus might be returning to truly low-cost phones. Renders posted by OnLeaks and 91Mobiles point to the OnePlus 8 Lite, a budget model that would sit below the rumored OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. Not surprisingly, this phone would scale back to ‘just’ two cameras on the back versus three on other variants (though there appears to be a depth sensor), and it wouldn’t have flashy features like a curved display, either. The main thing most of you would like to hear is the price — which we still don’t know.

OnePlus’ flagship pricing has crept upward over the years, to the point where you’re paying nearly $700 for a phone like the 7 Pro in 2019. The 8 Lite could fill the gap for those customers who miss OnePlus’ early days of bargain-basement prices.

But in what configurations?Apple’s redesigned Mac Pro will be available to order December 10th

After half a year — or two years, if you really think about it — Apple’s reworked Mac Pro is close at hand. The company has notified interested customers that both the workstation and the Pro Display XDR will be available to order on December 10th. There’s still a lot Apple hasn’t said about the possible configurations and their respective pricing, but you c

Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 Mobile Office apps in 2021

[ad_1]

“Because of the lack of security updates, we strongly recommend that if you wish to use Office on a phone you transition to the latest Microsoft Office apps on an iOS or Android phone,” Bill Doll, senior product marketing manager for Office apps strategy at Microsoft urged.

The announcement isn’t a huge surprise. Windows 10 Mobile was a commercial flop and it’s been years since Microsoft released a new Lumia smartphone. The platform is slowly being retired and that, inevitably, includes any Microsoft-made apps. If you’re still clinging to a Lumia 950, though, you have another year-or-so to poke around the Office apps and imagine what could have been. Personally, we’re ready to move on and embrace Microsoft’s dual-screen, Android-powered mobile future. We’ll miss some of the platform’s crazier ideas, like Continuum — a concept Samsung is keeping alive — but very little else. Goodbye, old friend.

Snapchat Cameos lets you insert your face into a GIF

[ad_1]

Snapchat Cameos appear in your own GIF

If that sounds a touch creepy, well, you’re not wrong. According to a GIF that Snap supplied (above), you can appear as an anthropomorphized cat, someone riding a shopping cart, a giant animated “thumbs down” emoji and more. You can add your own message and, as you’d expect, Snapchat will also create facial expressions, mouth movements and more.

If your friend is also set up for Cameos, you can include them in the fun as well. All you need to do is open Chat, tap the emoji button, hit the Cameos icon, tap on a tile and take a selfie. Then, you’ll get the option to choose whether you’d like to enable two person cameos. You can send that Cameo to someone else via chat using the same controls.

While a touch disturbing, the feature has high comedic potential and could help Snapchat stay ahead of Instagram and other rivals, at least until they figure out how to copy it. Cameos is rolling out on December 18th to iOS and Android with 150 Cameos, giving you plenty of options for, er, self-expression.

NASA hopes OSIRIS-REx data will explain an asteroid’s mini-eruptions

[ad_1]

OSIRIS-REx has been surveying Bennu since it arrived on December 3rd, 2018, with the aim of finding a boulder-free landing site. Based on observations so far, scientists have several theories about the eruptions. One is that small fragments of space rock called meteoroids are striking Bennu, dislodging particles.

Another explanation is thermal stress fracturing. Bennu’s surface temperatures fluctuate widely over its 4.3-hour rotation; while warm when exposed to the sun, at “night,” the asteroid gets extremely cold. That may cause rocks to fracture and shed particles.

OSIRIS-REx also discovered water on Bennu, and that may be released from clay on the rock when it’s heated. That could cause surface agitation, “causing particles to erupt,” NASA explained. If so, then only water-bearing asteroids might have such eruptions. If it’s thermal stress fracturing or meteoroid impacts, then any asteroid could have sporadic ejection events.

In any case, the mini-explosions have given NASA a new theory to test and scientists hope to actually gather some ejected particles when samples are taken. “The material returned to Earth from Bennu will almost certainly increase our understanding of asteroids,” NASA explained.

Once a sample site is picked in summer 2020, the Lockheed Martin-designed spacecraft will descend to the surface at just a quarter of a mile an hour. It will bounce gently off the asteroid while a sampling head uses a blast of nitrogen gas to collect dirt and small rocks. NASA hopes to gather anywhere from several ounces to nearly four and a half pounds of material, which will be delivered to Earth in September 2023.
