Oppo’s Reno3 Pro is set to become one of the thinnest 5G phones

[ad_1]

A device that thin isn’t likely to have a pop-up camera (also a famous Oppo feature), but there’s no center camera in site. However, the image is conveniently cropped on the left side, meaning it could have a corner hole-punch camera à la the Samsung Galaxy S10. It might also have a more basic rear camera setup than we’ve seen on recent phones.

While this device might be pretty desirable, being an attractive and pocketable phone, it’s not likely to arrive in the US. However, it could come to European carriers, given Oppo’s 5G partnerships with EE, Swisscom and others. There’s no word yet on pricing or availability.

Save up to $400 on Razer Blade laptops at Amazon

Blade 15

Razer Blade 15 vs. MacBook Pro

Razer offers several different configurations of the Blade 15, but the model we think offers a good mix of internals for the price is the RTX 2070 Max-Q variant with 256GB solid-state drive and 144Hz display. Amazon is selling this version for $2,000, down from $2,400. While that’s still a lot to pay for a new laptop, it will be the biggest price drop Amazon has ever offered on the Blade 15. Alternatively, the 2060 Max-Q version of the Blade is down to $1,800.

Roku’s latest Ultra streaming player is 50 percent off for Black Friday

[ad_1]

Roku only started shipping its latest Ultra in October, so it’s a killer deal on a brand new product. While it’s a set-top box that takes up a little more space than a streaming stick, the 4K-ready Ultra has an Ethernet port, which might help you have a sturdier streaming video resolution than over a WiFi connection.

The Ultra also includes a pair of JBL earbuds, which you can plug into the remote to watch your shows on your big screen without bothering anyone else, though any headphones with a 3.5mm jack will fit the bill. You’ll also have the option of watching your own videos on your TV via the player’s USB and microSD ports.

Surprise: The Instant Pot is discounted for Black Friday (again)

[ad_1]

The Ultra is one of Instant Pot’s most popular models, and that’s saying something given how enthusiastic Instant Pot fans are. If you’re not ready to commit to the 8-quart giant, the slightly smaller Instant Pot Ultra 6-quart model is on sale for $82, a $17 saving. If you want something even smaller, the 3-quart Instant Pot Ultra Mini is discounted at $75, a $25 saving.

If the Ultra isn’t the model you prefer, the Duo Nova (6-quart) is listed at $65, an $18 saving. Unlike the Ultra, which has 10 functions (electric pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, saute, yogurt maker, cake maker, egg cooker, sterilizer and warmer), the Duo Nova has just seven. If you can forgo using your Instant Pot as a cake maker, egg cooker and sterilizer, the Duo Nova might be the way to go.

If you do snag one of these deals, don’t forget to read our tips on getting the most out of your Instant Pot. These discounts run through December 2nd.

Google’s Pixel 3a drops to $300 on Amazon for Black Friday

[ad_1]

If you missed out on the Pixel 3a’s price drop last week, don’t worry — you’ll have a second shot now that Black Friday is here. Google’s starter 64GB smartphone is selling for $300 between now and December 2nd at 3AM Eastern. That’s a full $100 below the official price, and tempting if you want ‘pure’ Android without spending much. The pricing applies to all colors, including black (above) as well as purple and white.

Facebook’s Portal devices are each $50 off for Black Friday

[ad_1]

Portal

Facebook Portal (2019)

Amazon plans to discount both the black and white models by $50, making them $130 as opposed to their usual $180. Engadget’s Nicole Lee gave the redesigned Portal a 79 when she reviewed it in October. She liked the device’s tight integration with both Messenger and WhatsApp, as well as its rich video chat features. Her main concern, however, was Facebook’s track record on user privacy. To be clear, there are better smart displays you could buy this Black Friday, but if the specific functionality of Portal interests you, then $50 off is nothing to scoff at.

Portal Mini

Facebook Portal and Portal Mini

You can get another $50 discount on Facebook’s smallest smart display, the Portal Mini, with both the white and black models included in this week’s sale. With this price cut, the device will cost you $80, instead of the usual $130. We haven’t reviewed the Portal Mini specifically, but other than that smaller display it’s not markedly different from the 10-inch model. So, all the same caveats as above apply here. That said, less than a $100 on a smart display is, in absolute terms, a good deal.

Portal TV

Facebook Portal TV

Lastly, if you want to add video chat functionality to your television set, Amazon will discount Portal TV by $50 (sensing a theme here?). That brings the list price down to $100. As far as webcams go, Portal TV actually works pretty well. The camera features a wide field-of-view lens and it’s good at panning and zooming as needed to ensure you’re always in frame. Overall, we liked Portal TV, giving it a 78 when we reviewed it earlier this month, but we also felt that giving up a valuable HDMI port on our TVs was a tough ask, given the very specific functionality it offers. You have until December 2nd (or while supplies last), to buy Facebook’s Portal devices at these discounted prices.

Rip Curl and Surfline team up to serve videos of your surf sessions

[ad_1]

This isn’t a trivial investment when you’re looking at $300 for the watch and another $8 per month for Surfline. With that said, could be worthwhile if you’re either trying to improve your surfing skills or like to share your clips. And if you’re not inclined to use a Search GPS 2, you’ll be glad to know that Surfline is readying partnerships with other companies and plans to announce them in the “coming year.”

Amazon is discounting more Echo Show models by up to $80

[ad_1]

The second-gen Echo Show has a sharp, colorful, 10-inch display — thanks to design refinements, it doesn’t take up too much counter space. The Echo Show 8 is Amazon’s most recent addition to the lineup. It combines the same screen and sound capabilities of the Echo Show with the camera shutter and form factor of the Echo Show 5, and of course, an 8-inch display.

Plenty of other Amazon products are on sale too. In addition to the Fire TV and Echo discounts, Amazon is offering $45 off its latest Kindle Paperwhite ($85) and $30 off its latest Kindle ($60). Those devices received high scores when we reviewed them, 95 and 91, respectively. The new Paperwhite is a welcomed update to the classic. It’s added perks include waterproofing, Audible support over Bluetooth, improved design and a better-contrast display. The updated Kindle gives the Paperwhite a run for its money, though. In addition to a touchscreen and Audible support, the lower-end Kindle finally has a front-lit screen.

These discounts are valid through December 2nd.

TikTok tries to explain takedown of viral video about Uighurs in China

[ad_1]

Other the last day or so, a TikTok “makeup tutorial” video that was actually a call for viewers to investigate the detention of Uighur Muslims in China went viral on and off the platform. However, as The Guardian and others reported, TikTok temporarily banned the account of the teenager who created the video. According to her, this isn’t the first time the platfom has tried to censor her account for speaking about the issue.

This evening, as much of the US heads into a holiday weekend, TikTok offered a public apology and detailed timeline of events, where it claims that the ban was not related to the topic of this video. To summarize, the company’s version of events is that two weeks ago her earlier account was banned for a satirical video that featured an image of Osama Bin Laden as it violated “strict” policies against terrorist figures. Then, after the Uighur/eyebrow curling video, a separate sweep banning devices tied to accounts that had already been banned had the effect of locking her out of her new account. Then a “human moderation error” resulted in the video going offline for around 50 minutes.

It’s a detailed explanation that for some will be hard to believe. Feroza, the teenager who made the video, tweeted “do I believe they took it away because of a unrelated satirical video that was deleted on a previous deleted account of mine? Right after I finished posting a 3 part video about the Uyghurs? No.” The incident also occurs as US regulators are looking into TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, and its connections to the Chinese government. According to report today from Reuters, ByteDance has made efforts to separate TikTok from much of its Chinese operations, and is setting up a team in Mountain View, CA to oversee management of data in the US.

India’s lunar lander crashed within 500 meters of its target

[ad_1]

According to the report, Vikram’s braking thrusters malfunctioned — though we don’t know why — and it crashed within 500 meters of its designated landing site. All is not lost, though. All of the eight scientific instruments are still functioning and “providing valuable scientific data,” said Jitendra Singh, minister of state for the Department of Space.

Had ISRO successfully landed Vikram on the Moon, it would have made India only the fourth country in history to make a moon landing. ISRO might be able to salvage the mission, but the mishap is disheartening and a reminder that landing on the Moon is still hard.
