OnePlus reveals its second website data breach in two years

Early in 2018, popular cellphone maker OnePlus revealed it had coughed up credit card information on over 40,000 users in a data breach, and now it’s informing users of another one. This time, while the website is the source of the breach, the company believes payment info is unaffected, however information exposed may include “name, contact number, email and shipping address” from orders made on its site.

Impacted users should have received an email notifying them of the incident, and should keep an eye out for possible phishing attempt used based on the stolen information. The company said in the email and an FAQ published about the situation that “we are partnering with a world-renowned security platform next month, and will launch an official bug bounty program by the end of December.”

Elon Musk confirms Tesla’s ‘Cyberquad’ as a Cybertruck accessory

Other than unveiling Tesla’s new low-polygon-count pickup, Elon Musk also introduced an electric ATV at the event last night. Dubbed the Cyberquad, Musk confirmed on Twitter today that the two-person ATV will be available “first” as an option for Cybertruck buyers. At the event, the four-wheeler rode into the back of a Cybertruck as the truck’s adaptive suspension leaned back for easier loading, and then the ATV plugged in for charging right there in the bed.

We still don’t know anything else about its capabilities or potential cost, but early adopters of the truck who want to go off-roading may appreciate a zero-emission recreational vehicle to go along with their purchase.

In a few other tweets, Musk indicated there will be a solar power option for the truck capable of generating enough energy to drive 15 miles per day. He also referenced the “armor glass” demo that went awry, mentioning that earlier throws didn’t damage the window and eventually posting a slow-motion video of lead designer Franz von Holzhausen’s previous attempt.

Bungie finally has a fix for today’s ‘Destiny’ server problems

Over the last twelve hours or so, people trying to play Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 have had trouble connecting to the game, but at last Bungie support says it has found a resolution. However, fixing the issue in Destiny’s “core services” required restarting the servers and kicking everyone out again. So if you’d finally managed to log in and are now looking at a loading screen again, just give it a minute and keep an eye on the Bungie Help Twitter account for updates — you’ll get to those daily bounties soon.

T-Mobile confirms customers’ personal data accessed in hack

Affected customers in the US are being notified via a text message which directs them to a page on T-Mobile’s website. “Our Cybersecurity team discovered and shut down malicious, unauthorized access to some information related to your T-Mobile prepaid wireless account,” the page reads.

Hackers were able to access data including names and billing addresses, phone numbers, account numbers and information about what plans and features that customers chose. However, T-Mobile assures customers that no financial data such as credit card information, social security numbers or passwords were compromised.

The company says it has reported the breach to the authorities and that it has “a number of safeguards in place to protect your personal information from unauthorized access.”

TmoNews reached out to the company to find out how many customers’ information was compromised. T-Mobile reportedly responded that a “very small single digit percentage” of users were affected.

NYC creates a high-level position to oversee ethics in AI

The officer will have the help of advisory and steering committees that will respectively draw on appointed public members and city officials to “drive the conversation” around algorithms. To put it another way, the algorithms officer should have a better understanding of how algorithms apply in the real world.

It’s not yet clear who will take the position.

This is notably separate from NYC’s other tech initiatives, but it’s not surprising. This is more of an oversight role for ethics across all of the city’s government, including in areas where tech might only have a limited presence. Algorithmic bias can lead to racial discrimination, underfunding for projects or other serious problems no matter how unintentional it may be. A dedicated officer theoretically ensures that AI and similar tech will empower everyone, not just certain groups.

Jet.com is leaving the fresh grocery delivery game

Jet.com will no longer deliver fresh groceries in New York. It will focus, instead, on dry goods and merchandise. As part of the change, Walmart will reportedly close the fulfillment center it was using in the Bronx, eliminating between 200 and 300 jobs, a person familiar with the situation told Bloomberg.

In a statement emailed to Engadget, a Walmart spokesperson said the company “learned a lot by testing Jet fresh grocery delivery in New York City” and will “continue to test bold concepts that can offer convenience to customers.” Though, from the outside, it looks like Walmart tried to mimic an Amazon service and failed.

We gave the X1 Carbon series a score of 86 when we reviewed one of the 2019 models this past summer. Highlights included a comfortable keyboard, a handy privacy shutter for the webcam and a good mix of ports. For what it’s worth, though, we weren’t fans of the inconsistent brightness of the display and battery life on the UHD model.

If you want the versatility of a two-in-one, the company’s Yoga convertible is another option. The ThinkPad X1 Yoga model that stuck out to us features an eighth-generation Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Lenovo has cut the price of this model by $1,025 so that it now costs $1,253 as opposed to $2,279. As a rule of thumb, we generally like the Yoga series. Most recently, we gave the 2018 model a score of 84, praising it for its great keyboard, touchpad and battery life.

ThinkPad X1 Extreme

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme

For one of the most powerful computers Lenovo sells, check out the ThinkPad X1 Extreme. The model that caught our eye is currently $1,616, down from $2,939. It comes decked out with a ninth-generation Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Of the three laptops highlighted here, we liked the Extreme the most, giving it a rating of 88 when we reviewed it last year. Engadget’s Terrence O’Brien, normally not one for superlatives, said the Extreme’s keyboard “blows every other laptop on the market out of the water.” Besides mediocre battery life, his only other complaint with the Extreme was its lofty asking price, which this sale conveniently addresses.

Twitch loses another top streamer, this time to Facebook

The broadcaster told CNN Business that he’d received offers from “every major streaming platform,” but chose Facebook because it had the “most explosive potential.” An undisclosed amount of money did change hands, but this suggested that the initial payout wasn’t the only factor.

While Disguised Toast isn’t as big as recent Twitch departures like Ninja or Shroud, he still had about 1.3 million followers before the migration and was one of the top 40 streamers in 2019 based on viewing hours. He’s still a significant loss for Twitch, though, and a potential coup for Facebook at a time when major streamers have so far been leaving for Microsoft’s Mixer or YouTube.

And while Facebook’s live game streaming isn’t as dominant as Twitch, StreamElements chief Doron Nir noted that the social site “doesn’t have to rival Twitch” to be successful. Much like streaming TV services, it’s possible for there to be multiple thriving businesses — and Facebook has been growing (particularly in Asia and Latin America) even when rivals have faced grim months. It might only need enough top-tier streamers to foster a reasonably large audience, and any success beyond that may be a bonus.

Bollinger’s badass EV utility trucks arrive in 2021

Unfortunately, that huge battery pack also translates into exceedingly long charging times. Even with a Level 2 (240V) charger, you’re looking at a good 8 – 10 hours to fully replenish the system. However if you can get access to a Level 3 commercial charger, you can completely refill the Bollinger’s batteries in just 75 minutes.

The B’s are not available as kits, Bollinger will only be selling them as finished vehicles, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to customize it to your heart’s desire. Pretty much everything on the B’s is removable. That includes the windows, the doors, the roof panels, the bumpers and the rear seats — even the windshield if you’re so inclined. You can practically strip these trucks to the frame and they’ll still function. Most of the body is made from aluminum to keep the weight down, though the company is looking into offering carbon fiber components in the future, as well as potentially a cab-on-chassis design where customers can customize their vehicle from the ground up.

If you do take out the rear seats, the B1 and B2 offer a total of 113 cubic feet of cargo space. And if you need to haul extremely long items, say 12-foot lengths of 2x4s, the Bollingers offer a clever passthrough system running the length of the vehicle. Since there’s no internal combustion engine in the way, you can flip down both the rear and the front tailgates to accommodate the long load.

adsfThe Bollingers are massive vehicles. They’re rated as Class 3 trucks, putting them on par with the likes of the Chevy Silverado 3500 or Dodge Ram 3500 (minus the dually). As such, the Bollingers do not come with airbags. “We simulate side pole impacts for both passengers and batteries,” Bollinger said. “Rollover is a big one [on account of the off-roading capabilities], and we also have to crash test for a number of things. We’re going to do a lot of due diligence safety work on top of what [the NHTSA] requires.”

The company is currently ramping up production on the B’s and hopes to have that completed by the end of next year with the first batch of deliveries made to pre-order customers by early 2021. If you want one for yourself, however, you’re going to need to pony up $125,000 for either model.
