Macy’s says its website leaked credit card info to hackers for a week

[ad_1]

The technique, known as Magecart, has grown in popularity among hackers for its mix of relative simplicity and effectiveness. They don’t have to do much more than insert rogue scripts (pointed to remote command-and-control servers) and wait for people to go shopping. From there, they can use the info to make fraudulent purchases, make clone cards and sell the data on the black market.

Don’t expect these kinds of attacks to subside any time soon. They’ve been used against numerous major brands, including British Airways, Newegg and Ticketmaster. Until online stores are airtight against techniques like Magecart, they’ll be tempting targets.

‘Catan’ AR game could ride on Niantic’s tech

[ad_1]

Neither Catan‘s creators nor Niantic have officially established their partnership or set a release date, but Niantic’s fingerprints are all over the code. TechCrunch also said it confirmed the cooperation from sources inside Niantic. Catan‘s owners had acknowledged the game’s existence in late October, but not the Niantic connection.

This probably won’t be a runaway hit like some of Niantic’s properties. There are only so many people who are both enthusiastic Catan players and mobile gamers. However, that’s not necessarily the goal. Niantic has been gradually positioning itself as an AR platform in addition to a game studio. It doesn’t have to worry so much about creating dynamite hits of its own as it does convincing others to make games using its technology. Even if Pokémon and Harry Potter eventually fizzle out, Niantic will be happy if it becomes the go-to choice whenever someone wants to make an AR title.

Check out the trailer for the final episode of Darth Vader’s VR saga

[ad_1]

Thanks to the ancient lightsaber you recovered in Episode II, we see that you’ll be able to lead a droid army against Vader’s fortress on Mustafar. It’s not clear how much interactivity this part of the story will offer, but it looks cool nonetheless. Later in the episode, you’ll be tasked with taking on an Imperial Tie Fighter and even Darth Vader himself, with the trailer teasing the final showdown with the Sith Lord we knew was coming. “Time for one final lesson,” Vader declares ominously, as he ignites his lightsaber at the end of the clip.

You won’t have to wait long to play the game. It comes out this Thursday, November 21st. In the meantime, if you haven’t experienced the first two episodes of Vader Immortal and have access to an Oculus Quest or Rift, they’re well worth checking out. Engadget’s Devindra Hardawar called Vader Immortal the Star Wars VR game he had been waiting for. He particularly liked the fun lightsaber combat and the way ILMxLAB was able to take advantage of the medium to tell a compelling Star Wars story.

Karma’s latest supercar concept boasts neck-snapping power

[ad_1]

The niche Southern California automaker certainly knows how to build a beautiful car. But it takes more than a pretty face to get folks to give you their money.

The hybrid Karma GTS (which is more likely to show up on the road) has two electric motors and a single 3-cylinder range extender. Karma is using a BMW engine to keep the vehicle on the road for longer (360 miles) than the vehicle’s EV range of 80 miles. The combination motors and engine push out 536 horsepower and the car can do zero to 60 in 3.9 seconds. The new launch mode activates the range extender to provide maximum power. It launches with both motors and the engine at once.

The SC2 concept car is the automaker’s futuristic vision. It’s really a lot of tech that’s a bit ridiculous. For example the 1,100 horsepower and 10,500 pounds-foot of torque. Plus the company says it’ll do zero to 60 in less than 1.9 seconds. Finally, the pie-in-the-sky specs throw in a range of 350 miles.

What’s cool, is that the car will also record your drive on video so you can re-experience that journey (if you want). Probably while getting your back fixed after launching the vehicle to 60 miles an hour in less than two seconds with 10,500-foot-pounds of torque.

Oh, and it’s a convertible with scissor doors. It really is the entire package of all the cool things you want from a concept car.

The Karma GT which has already been announced will be ready in 2021. No word on when the GTS will make it to the garages of the super-rich.

The automaker doesn’t want to go it alone and is more than happy to share its products for a price — Karma wants to license its tech to other companies. That includes its battery skateboard, it’s propulsion system, it’s cockpit tech and its network (including its own cloud). Building cars is really a way to show off the technology it’s building.

The GTS looks cool. But the SC2 is next level and I’m sure it’ll never make it to market because it’ll snap the necks of drivers. Hopefully, the design will end up in the automaker’s stable of road-ready cars or at least from one of its partners.

Kickstarter wants projects to be more transparent about their budget

[ad_1]

It’s essentially a budgeting spreadsheet that will help creators map the cost of their projects. Like the Funding Calculator Kickstarter created in August, Project Budget will remind creators of expenses they may otherwise overlook — like taxes and fees. Once a Project Budget spreadsheet is complete, creators will have the option of sharing it in a new section of the project page.

Kickstarter

The feature is aimed at helping projects actually deliver, and do so in a timely fashion. It could also make campaigns more transparent. The latter is in line with new rules aimed at “honest and clear presentation.” Earlier this year, the platform asked creators to stop calling everything “the world’s best” and making other dubious claims.

In a blog post, Kickstarter says it wants “creators to be able to provide their backers with more clarity and insight into how they plan to spend the funds they raise on Kickstarter. We hope that this feature will give backers a sense of where their pledges are going, and how much it actually costs to bring an idea to life.”

‘Death Stranding’ and ‘Control’ lead Game Awards nominees

[ad_1]

Remedy Entertainment’s Control wasn’t too far behind with eight. It picked up nominations such as game of the year, game direction, art direction and two performance nods. The Outer Worlds, meanwhile, snagged four nominations, including game of the year and RPG.

Joining that trio in the game of the year category are Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Resident Evil 2 and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. SSBU also picked up best family game and fighting game nominations. Resident Evil 2 claimed three other nods for design, acton/adventure and game direction. Sekiro‘s four additional nominations are in the game direction, art direction, audio design and action/adventure categories.

Fortnite snagged three nominations, including for best esports game, ongoing game and community support. Fortnite World Cup winner Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf was nominated for best esports player as was that tournament for esports event. Other popular ongoing and esports games to pick up nominations include Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, League of Legends, Apex Legends, Overwatch, Destiny 2, Final Fantasy XIV and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege.

Several other games have nominations, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (three), Gears 5 (three), Sayonara Wild Hearts (three), Borderlands 3 (two) and the game seemingly everyone was talking about not too long ago, Untitled Goose Game (two).

One particularly notable name misses out on the content creator of the year category: last year’s winner, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins. The nominees this time around are Jack “Courage” Dunlop, Benjamin “DrLupo” Lupo, Soleil “Ewok” Wheeler, David “Grefg” Martínez and Michael “Shroud” Grzesiek.

You’ll find out which titles and personalities will take home prizes when The Game Awards takes place December 12th. As ever, you can expect plenty of game announcements and world premieres on that night too.

Xiaomi is adding early earthquake warnings to MIUI phones in China

[ad_1]

Xiaomi smartphone and set-top box owners in China will soon have access to potentially life-saving early earthquake warnings right on their devices. At its annual Mi Developer conference in Bejing, the Chinese electronics company said its MIUI 11-based smartphones and Mi TV set-top boxes now include an early earthquake warning feature. Xiaomi claims the system is able to deliver warnings “seconds to tens of seconds” before an earthquake arrives. The company has rolled out the feature in China’s Sichuan province first, which is one of the country’s more earthquake-prone regions, and plans to make it available to all Chinese users in the future.

Bird offers scooter credits when you take ‘helmet selfies’

[ad_1]

The company is encouraging cities to implement Helmet Selfie by getting in touch.

Accordingly, Bird will help you find the helmet you need. It’s launching a global Safety Marketplace that will offer a “curated” mix of helmets and other safety gear. If you’re not sure what equipment to get or just don’t want to traipse across town to get it, this could make your shopping considerably easier.

There’s a pragmatic reason for Bird to do this, of course. Local governments’ attention to scooter regulation remains high, and that’s exacerbated whenever there’s a glitch or other safety flaw that puts riders at risk. Whatever Bird spends on ride credits and other treats may pay dividends if it keeps the company out of trouble. However, it’s still beneficial — it might be worthwhile if it gets even a few people to carry a helmet with them on future rides.
