Lyft adds 200 electric vehicles to its fleet in Denver

[ad_1]

The company says the massive deployment was made possible by new legislation Colorado’s governor signed in May. Under the new law, rideshare rental programs qualify for an EV tax credit at the same level as consumers, which is up to $5,000 per vehicle. Lyft is now encouraging other local politicians to follow in Colorado’s footsteps as part of its efforts to electrify is whole network.

In its announcement, Lyft reiterated its plans to make its network 100 percent electric, starting with its Express Drive rental program. Since the program provides vehicles to people who want to drive for the company but don’t have a car of their own, Lyft believes the EVs will “have an even larger positive impact when compared with personally owned EVs” due to “their higher utilization.” The 200 electric vehicles Lyft is adding to its fleet will start hitting the road in December.

Tesla’s Model 3 and S are (once again) recommended by ‘Consumer Reports’

[ad_1]

CR originally chose not to recommend the Model 3, because its 60-to-0MPH braking distance came to 152 feet — its estimated braking distance was 133 feet. The vehicle eventually earned its recommendation after that issue was fixed, but it lost its status earlier this year due to complaints regarding glass defects and loose body trim. Tesla’s Model S was also added to and removed from CR’s recommended list more than once in the past. It got booted from the list last year due to issues with its air suspension system.

Model 3 didn’t just regain its recommended status, though: it also elbowed its way through competition to become the fifth most reliable car out of 12 luxury compact vehicles. It ranked below Audi A3, but above the Acura TLX and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing at CR, said “The Tesla Model 3 struggled last year as the company made frequent design changes and ramped up production to meet demand.” As its production stabilized, though, the organization saw “improvements to the reliability.” There are fewer reports about stuck latches and malfunctioning doors for the Model 3 this time, and there are fewer paint and trim job complains for the Model S. CR still isn’t recommending the Model X, though, due to complaints about malfunctioning doors, noises and leaks.

Mach-E leak reveals a lot about Ford’s electric Mustang SUV

[ad_1]

According to the site, the Mach-E is scheduled to debut in late 2020, but you may have to wait until 2021 for the GT version. A base Select model starts at about $43k, before jumping to Premium, then California Route 1, then the $59,900 limited First Edition, and finally the top of the line GT model that costs about $60k.

For that you get up to an EPA-estimated 300 miles of range with an extended battery, while the GT model drops down to 235 miles with its performance tweaks and 20-inch rims. The base select model makes do with RWD and an estimated 230 mile range. The fastest versions are expected to lay down a “mid 3-second” 0-60 MPH time, while the battery is capable of adding 47 miles of charge in about 10 minutes. If you want more details, then tune into the livestreamed unveiling on Sunday night at 9:30 PM ET.

Target’s same-day shipping service is now available in-app

[ad_1]

While the service doesn’t require a membership to use, it costs $10 per delivery unless you pay $99 per year for unlimited deliveries on orders worth $35 or more. Target’s taking an extra step to win customers over, though, and is offering free same-day shipping for a limited time. From November 17th to the 26th, the company will ship orders that reach $75 or more placed via its website or its app at no cost. Of course, those who’ve never tried Shipt before can still sign up for a four-week trial to get free shipping.

Target expanded its same-day delivery service throughout the US and launched a dedicated Shipt shopping experience on its website in mid-2019. In the past, you’d have to go to Shipt’s website or use its separate mobile app to be able to enjoy its perks. With same-day delivery’s arrival on mobile, Target’s more equipped to go head to head with Amazon this holiday shopping season.

Antitrust investigation of Google reportedly expands to Android

[ad_1]

Tonight CNBC reports that an ongoing antitrust investigation of Google undertaken by 50 attorneys general is expanding. While it started by looking into Google’s advertising business, it has apparently, as expected, expanded its scope to include search and the Android platform. Over the years Google has reached into more services — next up: checking — and platforms with increasingly deep ties to one another, and as the investigation concerns the use of customer data, it seems obvious that it will reach every part of the company eventually.

The 48 state AGs, as well as two representing Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, did not comment on the latest report, while Google said in a September blog post that it would cooperate with investigations.

Amazon is challenging Microsoft’s $10 billion JEDI contract victory

[ad_1]

A spokesperson from Amazon Web Services (AWS, the company’s cloud business) said “Numerous aspects of the JEDI evaluation process contained clear deficiencies, errors, and unmistakable bias, and it’s important that these matters be examined and rectified.” They added: “We also believe it’s critical for our country that the government and its elected leaders administer procurements objectively and in a manner that is free from political influence.”

Pentagon previously put the $10 billion cloud-computing competition on hold after the president suggested that it may be rigged in favor of Amazon. WSJ says Amazon denied the allegations. The Department of Defense also investigated an AWS employee who later worked on JEDI before returning to AWS and found that he “did not negatively impact the integrity of the JEDI procurement.” It’s no secret the president isn’t fond of the company, though, even if he did sign up for Twitch. Both Amazon and Jeff Bezos, who also owns the Washington Post, have served as frequent targets for him throughout his presidency.

The NSA says it stopped tracking cellphone locations without a warrant

[ad_1]

Last year the Supreme Court ruled, in a 5-4 decision, that a search warrant is required for law enforcement to perform cellphone tower searches to track someone’s location. The Daily Beast reported on a letter sent by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) to Senator Ron Wyden affirming that ever since that Carpenter decision, the “Intelligence community” has not sought cell-site location data or GPS records without a warrant.

It had been doing that, claiming authority under the Title V of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) / Section 215 of the Patriot Act. However Section 215 of the Patriot Act is set to expire next month, and in the letter (PDF), the assistant director writing it never confirms that the Supreme Court decision means they couldn’t, or wouldn’t, do it in the future.

Microsoft is adding 10 ‘Final Fantasy’ games to Xbox Game Pass

[ad_1]

With the blessing of Square Enix, Microsoft will add 10 Final Fantasy games to the service — technically nine if you consider Final Fantasy X: HD Remastered and Final Fantasy X-2: HD Remastered a single entry. The full list includes Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII: Remastered, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XV, as well as the aforementioned Final Fantasy X: HD Remastered and Final Fantasy X-2: HD Remastered. Next year, the publisher will also release Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX, along with Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue on Xbox One.

Each Final Fantasy title will join the service sequentially starting in 2020. While the upcoming Final Fantasy VII remake is still a PlayStation 4 exclusive, this is probably the best news Microsoft could have delivered to its fans given the circumstances.

There’s more good news if you’re a Yakuza fan. Three Yakuza titles — Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 — are coming to Xbox for the first time, and they’ll join Game Pass some time in 2020.

After a brief flirtation with Japanese studios at the start of the Xbox 360’s lifecycle, Microsoft’s consoles haven’t been much of a destination for JRPGs. That’s clearly something Microsoft is trying to change. During the company’s X019 event, Xbox division head Phil Spencer spoke to all the trips he’s recently taken to Tokyo to secure today’s announcements and went on to add how he knows there’s more work to be done on that front.

Wirecutter’s best deals: Save $200 on a 13-inch MacBook Pro (2019)

[ad_1]

Apple MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

apple

Street price: $1500; deal price: $1300

If you’re interested in purchasing an Apple laptop, this is a solid drop on a MacBook we recommend. The Apple MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, two Thunderbolt 3 ports), which typically sells for $1500, is now down to $1300 in the space gray and silver finishes. It comes with an Intel 8th generation core i5 processor, 8 GB of ram and 256 GB storage. Our chief complaints about this model were limited ports and lack of storage. This sale effectively drops the 256 GB model to the same price as the 128 GB, so if the lack of more ports isn’t a deal breaker, now is a great time to save.

As the top pick in our guide to the best MacBooks, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is a well-balanced laptop. Wirecutter Senior Staff Writer Andrew Cunningham wrote, “The best Mac laptop for most people is the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2019, two Thunderbolt 3 ports). It’s more than fast enough for the things you usually need a computer for—browsing, working on documents, and photo and video editing—and it has an excellent high-resolution screen, a great trackpad, enough battery life to last through an eight-hour workday, and a (relatively) reasonable price. The Pro’s main shortcomings are almost all shared by other modern Apple laptops: the low-travel keyboard, a small number of homogenous ports (in this case, two Thunderbolt 3 ports) that may require the use of USB-C hubs or new cables, and a high price relative to Windows laptops with similar performance and features. But the Pro’s light weight, solid construction, and industry-leading support still make it a good laptop, especially if you also own an iPhone or other Apple devices.”

Coast FL75 Headlamp

coast

Street price: $36; deal price: $20

Down to a new low of $20, this is a great deal on a headlamp we love for its beautiful light quality. If you like the standard black color and have a use for one, this deal places the FL75 lower in price than most of our other headlamp picks. Whether you’re a camper, hiker, or just looking for some illumination as you take your dog 0ut for an evening walk, this deal is a good chance to pick up a bright and reliable headlamp.

Our beautiful light quality pick in our guide to the best headlamp, the Coast FL75 offers better lighting at the expense of being a bit heavier. Wirecutter Senior Staff Writer Eve O’Neill wrote, “If you want a headlamp with a brighter, higher-quality beam than our top pick offers, we think the Coast FL75 is the most user-friendly option for weekend camping and working around the house. Designed to run on basic AAA batteries, this 435-lumen light has both a floodlight and a spotlight that you can toggle between using a manual dial around the lens; it also has a red LED, something that not all of the higher-end models have. To our great joy, the red and white LEDs have separate buttons that are simple to operate, too. The FL75 also survived our dryer test while some comparable models couldn’t, so we have confidence in taking it camping. Plus, Coast offers a lifetime warranty on this product.”

Anker PowerPort III Nano

anker

Street price: $20; deal price: $16

Down to $16 from a street price around $20, this is a nice savings on this tiny USB phone charger pick. The Anker PowerPort III Nano only has one port, but it’s the smallest option that still provides fast charging for any phone. This deal brings the PowerPort III Nano down to a lower price than any of our other USB phone charger picks, so if you’re interested in a low-profile option, this is a good time to buy.

The tiny charger pick in our guide to the best USB phone charger, the Anker PowerPort III is the smallest charger that will fast charge any phone. Wirecutter Senior Staff Writer Nick Guy wrote, “We think most people are best served by a charger with two ports since it adds versatility in pretty much any situation, whether you charge around the house or toss it into your bag for commuting or traveling. But if you value a charger’s size above all else, the Anker PowerPort III Nano is a great option that can fast-charge just one phone. It’s 40 percent smaller than the next-smallest fast charger we’ve found, but it’s still able to safely deliver 18 watts of power over USB-C.”

Vizio SB46514-F6 Soundbar

vizio

Street price: $800; deal price: $700

In a deal that matches the previous lowest price we’ve posted on this soundbar, the Vizio SB46514-F6 is down to $700, a $100 drop. It comes with two rear speakers and four upward-facing speakers, resulting in sound that bounces around the environment for more dynamic audio immersion. Great for gifts (for others or yourself), this is a good time to pick one up if you’re interested.

The top pick in our guide to the best soundbar, the Vizio SB46514-F6 is the best all-around soundbar in our book. Wirecutter Editor Adrienne Maxwell wrote, “The Vizio SB46514-F6 is a full-featured soundbar that comes with everything you need to create a 360-degree sound experience. While many other high-performance soundbars require you to pay more to add a subwoofer or rear speakers, this Vizio package includes a wireless 10-inch subwoofer and wired rear speakers, as well as four built-in up-firing Atmos speakers to produce a fully enveloping soundstage. The SB46514-F6 offers a balanced, neutral sound that works for movies and music, it has built-in Bluetooth and Chromecast support so you can play streaming music, and the connection panel includes every type of input your AV components need.”
