Someone squeezed a Nintendo Wii into a Game Boy Color-like case

[ad_1]

GingerOfMods 3D-printed the shell and frankensteined the Wiiboy Color together using bits and pieces of other Nintendo consoles, as Kotaku noted. The dual joysticks are from Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons and GingerOfMods yanked the face buttons from a DS Lite, while circuitry from a GameCube controller ties those together. The rear has triggers, Z-buttons, and a cooling fan.

There’s a USB-C port for charging and data transfer. GingerOfMods says it’ll run for two or three hours on a single charge, but you can plug in an external battery pack to keep playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess or some such a bit longer. Unlike a lot of current smartphones, it has a headphone jack too, so all is well in this corner of the world.

It’s not clear whether it has WiFi or Bluetooth modules. Since there’s no sensor bar, you wouldn’t be able to get the full use out of a Wii Remote anyway. However, the console can simulate the controller shaking that many Wii games require.

Modders have been making portable Wii consoles for years, but this one stands out because of how polished it is, and because of its clear resemblance to another classic Nintendo console. And, yes, GingerOfMods does take commissions.

Tell us all about how this year’s Pixel Buds sound and feel

[ad_1]

Google’s first pair of wireless buds, back in 2017, were lacking in a few areas: they weren’t truly wireless, some controls were missing and the touch pads were arduous. That being said, there was a lot to like in their sound quality, battery life and fit. When the company released an upgraded model this year, it fully cut the cord, improved the touch controls and made the buds more comfortable. However, it (again) missed out on adding in active noise cancelation. However, the improvements were enough to boost the score by 18 points from 65 for the original Pixel Buds to 83 for the 2020 version.

If you bought this year’s Pixel Buds, how do you like them? What do you use them most for? Do you miss active noise cancelation? Tell us about their fit, audio quality and how you think they compare to the original pair in your own user review on our Pixel Buds product page. We want to hear all about your experiences — remember, the best quotes are included in user review roundup articles!

OnePlus might be resurrecting its smartwatch ambitions

[ad_1]

The smartwatch plans OnePlus shelved years ago could be back on the table, 9to5Google reports. 91Mobiles spotted a listing on the IMDA website for a “OnePlus Watch.” Beyond the model number, W301GB, we don’t know much, but there are a few reasons a smartwatch from OnePlus would make sense.

Several years ago, OnePlus CEO Carl Pei said the company was working on its own smartwatch. In 2016, he shared sketches on Twitter, but by that point, the company had scrapped plans to develop the wearable. It seems that the company thought it was overstretching, so it killed a bunch of non-phone projects. Flash forward to today: OnePlus has wireless earbuds and TVs — a smartwatch seems a lot more feasible.

Diplo previews his new album in the meditation app Calm

[ad_1]

This year has been a roller coaster of emotions for a variety of reasons, and as such apps for mental well-being have been in the spotlight quite a bit. Calm, one of the most popular meditation and sleep apps out there, scored a somewhat unexpected bit of exclusive content — massive electronic musician and producer Diplo is previewing his new album through the app right now.

The album, titled MMXX, is the “only music” Diplo made and plans to release this year. It sounds like it’ll be released through more traditional means next week, but Calm users can check out five songs now. Whether or not it’s a fit for the app remains to be seen, but if this was a bunch of huge club tracks we figure Calm probably wouldn’t have gone for it. Indeed, a tweet from Calm describes the album as Diplo’s first collection of ambient music.

Xiaomi’s under display camera tech is coming to phones next year

[ad_1]

Xiaomi developed its own pixel grid arrangement that allows light to pass through the gap area of sub-pixels. At the same time, each single pixel has a complete RGB subpixel layout with no sacrifice in pixel density. All of that means that the display pixel density above the camera is the same as elsewhere on the screen, showing the “same brightness, color gamut and color accuracy.” Xiaomi also optimized the camera algorithm, claiming it performs the same as conventional front cameras.

So far, we haven’t seen great performance on prototype under-display selfie cameras, so we’ll have to see Xiaomi’s system to believe it. In any case, we should get a taste of the technology on a mass-production camera soon, as ZTE’s Axon 20 5G with the first mass-produced under-display camera will arrive on September 1st. Xiaomi’s tech won’t arrive until 2021, but it could have the edge in technology if the claims are accurate.

A US teen wrote 27,000 Wikipedia entries in a language they don’t speak

Do I have to admire the work ethic?

A reminder that not every Wikipedia editor is an expert in their field. Earlier this week, a Reddit user discovered that in the Scots language version of Wikipedia, almost half (literally 49 percent) was written by a teen in North Carolina, who in fact can’t speak one of the indigenous languages of Scotland. Unsurprisingly, they didn’t do a great job, relying on faulty online translations and frequently introducing other errors.

By 2018, the 19-year-old had written more than 20,000 entries and made approximately 200,000 edits. Wikipedia admins haven’t decided what to do just yet: Do they delete all the entries made by the user, or edit them into something functionable?

LG’s latest air purifier fits right on your face

You merely adopted the mask. I was born in it, molded by it.

LG Puricare air purifier

LG has decided that the smartest thing you can do is to strap an electronic air purifier to your face to scrub your inhalations clean before they reach your lungs. The PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier has a pair of three-speed fans and HEPA-style filters similar to those in LG’s household air purifiers.

Simply breathe as normal, and a built-in “respiratory sensor” will detect how fast you breathe, as well as how much air is going in and out, to adjust the fan speed. It comes with a UV purifying storage case, and the 820mAh battery will keep it running for up to eight hours.

‘Fall Guys’ season two will indulge in medieval fantasy

New levels were teased, briefly.

Fall Guys

Arguably the highlight of a pretty limp Gamescom presentation last night was a tiny sniff of the next season of Fall Guys, the world’s (and our) current game of the moment. More battle royale stages, more costumes and a medieval theme were the main takeaways, with some interesting new block building stages looking like they’ll be utter chaos — the charm of this game in the first place.

OnePlus reportedly launching the entry-level ‘Clover’ smartphone

[ad_1]

OnePlus could soon launch its first entry-level smartphone and release it in the US, according to Android Central. That would mark the first time the brand has dabbled in that space, having focused solely on flagship phones (most recently the OnePlus 8) and only recently dipping into the mid-range with the $500 OnePlus Nord.

The Clover could have a 6.52-inch 720p (1,560 x 720) display, Snapdragon 460 processor, 4GB of RAM and a rear 13-megapixel triple camera setup, all powered by a humongous 6,000 mAh battery with 18W fast charging. While the general specs are run-of-the-mill, the value proposition is clearly in the large battery that could let the phone run for days, then charge back up pretty quickly.

Facebook says Apple blocked message noting 30 percent App Store fee

[ad_1]

In an effort to let its users know that not everything they pay will go to the hosts, Facebook added a notice on the purchase screen for iOS clearly stating that Apple will take a 30 percent cut. Apparently, though, Apple blocked it from showing that notice to users, citing an App Store rule that prohibits developers from showing “irrelevant” information. The company told Reuters in a statement:

“Now more than ever, we should have the option to help people understand where money they intend for small businesses actually goes. Unfortunately Apple rejected our transparency notice around their 30% tax but we are still working to make that information available inside the app experience.”

While Google also takes a 30 percent cut from in-app purchases, hosts will still get 100 percent of their revenue from Android purchases where Facebook Pay is available. Reuters notes, however, that the line Facebook added for Android stating that it doesn’t charge fees for purchases isn’t showing up either.

Apple pays $10 million to settle lawsuit over Powerbeats2 charging issues

[ad_1]

Apple has agreed to pay $9.75 million to settle a class-action lawsuit over charging issues with its Powerbeats2 wireless earphones (via Apple Insider). Launched in 2017, the suit focused on the advertised claims of durability, sweat-resistance and battery life, alleging the earphones had a “design defect” that caused them to stop holding a charge after a short amount of time.

The plaintiffs also accused Apple of not repairing or replacing the devices within the one year warranty period. Apple denied all allegations, saying it’s only settling given the “risks, uncertainties, burden, and expense of continued litigation,” according to the agreement.
