Google’s voice recorder app is heading to older Pixel phones

[ad_1]

Google has often added features it debuts on its latest flagship handsets to its older devices and even its iOS apps, so the news it’d make Recorder more broadly available was somewhat expected from the jump. The app is useful for people who hate taking notes or need to quote speech accurately (such as your friendly neighborhood journalists).

It’s not clear when Google will roll out the update that brings the app to other Pixels, nor which models it’ll actually support. You can sideload Recorder onto many Android devices anyway, but an official update that brings it to older Pixels will surely encourage more people to try it.

How to get the best Apple TV+ launch deals

[ad_1]

To start, anyone that signs up for Apple TV+ will receive a free seven-day trial. The one thing to keep in mind with today’s launch is that it’s probably not worth subscribing to Apple TV+ just yet. Reviews of the initial lineup haven’t been great, and not all the episodes from each series are available to watch. You’ll get a lot more out of the seven-day trial if you wait.

Another way to get Apple TV+ for free is to buy a new Apple device. If you purchase a new iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV, you get a free one-year subscription. This offer has been available since Apple announced it on September 10th, the same day the company unveiled the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. When you launch the Apple TV app on your new device, you’ll see a prompt to start your trial. AT&T is currently selling the Apple TV for $90 — down from $179 — so if you’ve been thinking about buying the set-top box, that’s one way you can get both the device and Apple TV+ for relatively little money.

Students, meanwhile, get free access to the service if they’re a current Apple Music subscriber. If you’re in college or university but don’t subscribe to Apple’s music streaming service, you can still take advantage of the offer, though only for a “limited-time.” It’s also worth pointing out that Apple TV+ won’t be free once you graduate. You’ll also lose access if you cancel your Apple Music subscription at any time.

Last but not least, if you happen to subscribe to Emmy magazine, you’ll have received a three-month trial voucher inside the latest issue.

Again, it’s worth stressing that when it comes to Apple TV+, being patient will likely go a long way. Apple has interesting content in the pipeline, and you’ll be to watch most shows in their entirety.

Ubisoft is developing five games for Microsoft’s next Xbox

[ad_1]

Last week, Ubisoft announced delays for almost every game it has in development. With this new information, it seems likely that the decision was meant to give developers time to create next-gen versions of the games before Xbox Scarlett launches in late 2020. It’s odd that Guillemot only mentioned Xbox Scarlett and not Sony’s PlayStation 5, which is launching around the same time; Ubisoft’s games are typically released on both Microsoft and Sony hardware.

Console launch line-ups are often pretty weak, so it’s reassuring to know that gamers will have several choices to make when they pick up the latest consoles. Hopefully, more publishers will announce more launch window games in the coming months.

Apple TV 4K is on sale for an all-time low of $90

[ad_1]

Of course, you don’t need an Apple device or Apple TV to watch the company’s new streaming service. It’s also available through the Apple TV app on Roku, two Amazon Fire TV Stick devices and Samsung smart TVs. It should arrive on more streaming devices and TVs soon.

Google buys Fitbit for $2.1 billion

[ad_1]

Rick Osterloh, Google’s head of devices and services, says that the deal is an “opportunity to invest even more in Wear OS as well as introduce Made by Google wearable devices into the market.” Which suggests that the company will, contrary to expectation, be used as Google’s wearable division. And that Fitbit’s hardware is likely to adopt Wear OS as its software platform as the two companies collaborate.

Those concerned that Google will use Fitbit’s data for ad-targeting may be reassured that Google will not “sell” your data to third parties. Although from the wording, it’s likely that your information will be used for Google’s own ad business, although you will have the same control you do with your existing Google data.

NVIDIA G-Sync comes to LG OLED TVs this week

[ad_1]

Beginning this week, a firmware update will be pushed to LG OLEDs to allow G-Sync support. It’ll be available on this year’s E9 (65 and 55 inches), C9 (77, 65 and 55 inches) and B9 (65 and 55 inches) models. LG says the firmware will arrive in Northern America first before rolling out to Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East by the end of the year.

Support for G-Sync should make games look smoother, with reduced response times for a more immersive playing experience. LG also promises the firmware will reduce flicker, tearing and stuttering when playing PC games.

To take advantage of the G-Sync feature, you’ll need a PC with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX or GeForce GTX 16-Series graphics card. NVIDIA will be releasing a new GeForce Game Ready Driver to enable the connection of compatible LG TVs to PCs with the selected cards via HDMI. Bringing the two together should enable a refresh rate of 144Hz in 1080p and 120Hz at 1440p for a smooth and snappy gaming experience.

Google update makes Chrome ready for web-based VR

[ad_1]

The beta of Chrome 79 reveals the details about the support for web-based virtual reality (VR) experiences. Developers can create websites with content including games, 360-degree videos and immersive art using the WebXR Device API, with controllers supported by the GamePad API. Sites can be displayed on a smartphone or on a head-mounted display such as an Oculus Quest.

Support for web-based VR content will be coming to other Chromium-powered browsers in addition to Chrome soon, including Firefox Reality, Oculus Browser, Edge and Magic Leap’s Helio. In the future, Chrome and other browsers will support augmented reality features as well.

Other new features in Chrome 79 include tab freezing, in which pages that have been open in the background for more than five minutes will be suspended. As long as the tab isn’t playing music or video and the site hasn’t opted out, the page will be frozen. This should help make Chrome less of a resource hog, especially on less powerful devices.

Additionally, according to XDA Developers which investigated Chrome’s bleeding edge version Canary, a shared clipboard is also coming to Chrome. This allows users to send text from their browser to another device like an Android phone, by highlighting the text and using the “Send to [device name]” context menu option. The text can then be pasted into any field on the Android device.

You can download the beta of Chrome 79 now, or wait for the features to make their way to the main Chrome browser on December 10th.

Scientists find a hidden black hole using new detection method

[ad_1]

Black holes swallow light, which makes them impossible to observe directly. The easiest black holes to spot are those which form a binary system with a star, such as the Cygnus X-1 black hole which is paired with a blue supergiant. As the black hole and the star orbit around each other, the black hole pulls matter away from the star and devours it, giving off X-rays in the process. Scientists can spot these X-rays and deduce the existence of a black hole.

This technique only locates black holes which are near enough their partner stars to draw away material, however. There are thought to be many, many more black holes which don’t get close enough to swallow material and produce X-rays, making them dimmer and even harder to locate.

The new study demonstrates how to spot these dimmer black holes, using the example of a binary system consisting of a giant star, 2MASS J05215658+4359220, and an unknown partner. The team were able to determine that the partner was in fact a dim black hole by using spectroscopy data.

To locate a hidden black hole, the scientists looked at the Doppler shift of stars and compared this to their brightness over time. A significant Doppler shift can indicate a strong source of gravity, and when a star’s brightness goes up and down in a set pattern, that suggests there is a large object orbiting the star which sometimes blocks its light. Taken together, these two indicators suggest the presence of a black hole.

Having zeroed in on the 2MASS J05215658+4359220 system as a prime candidate, the scientists were able to determine that the object orbiting around the star must have a mass around three times that of our Sun, which indicates it is likely a small black hole.

The next step to proving the usefulness of this approach is for the team to search for more hidden black holes using the same method. If they are successful, we could have a new tool for locating numerous black holes throughout our galaxy.

The findings are published in the journal Science.

Huawei’s next tablet might look like the iPad Pro

[ad_1]

Huawei

Whatever it ends up being called, it looks like the tablet (codenamed “Marx”) will have thin bezels and will support the company’s M-Pen stylus, as well as its smart magnetic keyboard. When set up with the keyboard, it really does look like the iPad Pro. The renders also show that the tablet will be available in at least two colors — black and white — and will come with a USB-C port flanked by two speakers. It’s still not clear, however, if the device will have a 3.5mm jack.

Apple TV+ shows and movies premiere today

[ad_1]

Apple TV+ premiere times

The Apple TV+ service will cost $4.99 per month, but there’s a seven day free trial available to everyone, and if you purchase new hardware — iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac — then there’s a free year waiting. If your device was purchased since Apple’s press conference on September 10th, then all you should need to do is log in on that machine and open the Apple TV app, where a prompt will initiate the one year trial period.

'The Morning Show' on Apple TV

On iOS and macOS users can download videos for offline viewing, all the shows are promised in up to 4K quality with Dolby Vision HDR, plus Dolby Atmos audio for most of them. It’s unclear how strictly Apple will monitor shared account streaming, but each TV+ subscription is good for use with six accounts using Family sharing, each with their own profile and preferences.

Apple’s original TV shows and movies are also viewable on the web at tv.apple.com. At launch viewers can choose between new episodes of For All Mankind, The Morning Show, See, Helpsters, Dickinson, Ghostwriter, Snoopy in Space and Oprah’s Book Club. Reviews of the initial lineup have been unenthusiastic, but perhaps you’ll enjoy them more if you’re not watching on deadline. Plus, that free year subscription means Apple has time to brute force its way into being something worth paying $5 per month for.
