Surface

Finally, there’s a supposed third generation Surface Laptop, with no fuzzy Alcantara to be seen, just smooth metal, USB-C ports and AMD hardware inside 13- and new 15-inch frames. What we haven’t seen pictures of is any rumored dual screen “Centaurus” Surface, but there’s still a few hours left before everything is revealed officially on October 2nd at 10AM ET.Surface

Apple’s improved Maps expand across the northeast US

[ad_1]

From Monday, folks in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, Delaware, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Washington, DC and areas of Virginia and West Virginia can access more detailed maps, according to CNET. Reports emerged last month, before iOS 13 launched, that people in some of those states were already seeing more comprehensive maps in the app. Engadget has contacted Apple for clarification.

The new-look Maps brings broader coverage of road networks, refined pedestrian data, increased land cover detail and more accurate addresses. If you’re in those aforementioned locales, the app should offer more realistic renderings of buildings, parks, marinas and beaches. In addition, there are indoor maps available for some US malls and airports around the globe.

The Look Around feature — Apple’s version of Google Street View — allows you to peek at various aspects of a location. With Collections, you can pull together and share lists of places, and a favorites option offers navigation to the places you go to every day. Apple is touting real-time transit information and flight updates as features of the app too, along with improved turn-by-turn directions. You’ll also be able to share your estimated time of arrival to a destination as well.

While Apple announced the Maps update in June and launched it on a limited basis with iOS 13 earlier this month, it might be a while before you can use the overhauled version if you’re not in one of the areas mentioned above. Apple aims to expand the upgraded app across the US by the end of 2019, and elsewhere in 2020.

PlayStation studio chairman Shawn Layden is stepping down

[ad_1]

We’ve asked Sony if it can provide more details.

There have been frequent changes of leadership among the PlayStation team in recent years, including the exit of President Andrew House in favor of John Kodera, who promptly swapped roles with Jim Ryan this February. It’s now Ryan who’s the frontman for Worldwide Studios news, not the iconic Layden. We’d add that the PlayStation 5 launch is expected in late 2020 — now may be a prime opportunity for a changing of the guard at Sony, whether it’s voluntary or not.

Whatever prompted the decision, it marks the end for an era for the PlayStation brand. Layden has been with Sony in some form or another for roughly 32 years, including a stint as the comms assistant for co-founder Akio Morita. His gaming career took off in earnest when he became a producer at Sony Computer Entertainment in 1996, and rose through the ranks to become SIE’s President in 2014.

For many, he was the quintessential public face of PlayStation, presenting at major events and explaining key decisions. More importantly, though, he also oversaw first-party game development during much of the PS4 era. Horizon Zero Dawn? Uncharted 4? The Last Guardian? While Layden wasn’t directly involved in making those hits, they all arrived under his watch. His successor’s main challenge is to keep that momentum going.

Reddit widens its anti-harassment policies to enable swifter crackdowns

[ad_1]

The site will also start looking into harassment reports from observers, not just the victims. An “improved” machine learning system will better prioritize and organize reports, but humans will still be responsible for making decisions.

It’ll take some time to “fully enforce” the new measures. However, the crackdown has already affected a number of subreddits, including the r/Braincels community aimed at incels (“involuntary celibates”). Reddit also agreed that subreddits that were explicitly sexist, racist or otherwise dedicated to bigotry or harassment would be “likely to break the rules.”

Reddit explained its stance as a reflection of feedback from users who felt Reddit wasn’t properly and swiftly addressing abuse. There were many instances where the company didn’t take action against harassment, even the more “egregious” instances. This could ensure that the rules reflect the “spirit” of what was intended, Reddit said.

The updated policy is already raising concerns. The definitions are vague enough that there are concerns Reddit might clamp down on users and communities by applying overly subjective definitions of harassment and group targeting. Does a subreddit face a ban because some of its members run coordinated harassment campaigns and issue threats, even if the community wasn’t created for that reason? And what happens to communities for people leaving religions?

Reddit may feel like it doesn’t have much choice. Harassment has remained a problem on Reddit despite past bans. There’s also the simple matter of sustaining the business. The company has previously had trouble courting advertisers due to toxic subreddits, and big brands might be happier knowing that their ads won’t appear alongside particularly vile discussions.

Hyundai hires a NASA engineer to run its new ‘flying car’ division

[ad_1]

According to Hyundai, the UAM sector is expected to grow to $1.5 trillion within the next 20 years. But Hyundai is far from the first to announce UAM plans. Uber is working on a flying taxi with Bell. Volocopter has an 18-rotor autonomous air taxi. Lilium’s flying taxi may carry as many as five passengers, and Boeing and Kitty Hawk have teamed up on their own venture.

Still, Shin’s experience working on the supersonic X-plane, electric aircraft, unmanned aircraft system (UAS) traffic management and UAM could give Hyundai an edge over its competition.

Twitter rolls out filter for potentially offensive DMs

[ad_1]

The expansion comes as part of a wider effort to curb abuse that includes reply moderation. It won’t stop some of the worst offenders, such as those who intend to carry out threats whether or not you read their DMs. It should, however, give you a way to leave your message inbox open to people you don’t follow without giving creeps an easy way to make your life miserable.

More like a laptop than ever

[ad_1]

Speaking of iPad screens, I’ve always hated how — unless you had a physical keyboard connected to it — iOS’s keyboard eats up a third of the screen. There’s a fix of sorts for that now in the form of an iPhone-sized floating keyboard you can toggle from the main one. Typing while holding an iPad mini in both hands is one thing; trying to do the same with an Air or a Pro often felt ridiculous before this tiny new keyboard made it easier to peck one a letter at a time, or swipe out a message with the new QuickPath keyboard.

Apple also made some changes to how you might edit and copy/paste your text. My days often involve lots of running around with an iPad, for taking down notes and whipping up the occasional script. It sounds pretty minor, but you can now just drag the iPadOS text cursor around the screen and drop it right where you need it. (It’s not quite as satisfying as the 3D Touch equivalent, but it’s handy all the same.)

Selecting text is pretty easy, too: Just double-tap a word, and drag across the screen to highlight the appropriate bits. I say “pretty easy” because it still requires a bit of trial and error to pick out exactly what you needed, but it still feels much more precise than it used to. Since you’re probably highlighting text to do something with it, iPadOS uses some new gestures for copying (pinch three fingers together on the screen) and pasting (the reverse). If that sounds a little awkward, well, you’re right — it feels more natural on these big screens than on iPhones, but I’d still much rather long-press on the right spot and just tap “Paste”.

There are, as always, other methods of interacting with iPads beyond fingers on glass. Apple has been pushing its Pencil for years, and the company claims that software improvements have brought the latency on both versions of the stylus down to 9ms. If you’re anything like me — that is, a poor doodler and infrequent note-taker — the difference won’t feel drastic. Still, it’s there, and it does make drawing feel slightly smoother and more natural. The palette of tools that pops up when you start using the Pencil has been also redesigned, and you can flick it around the screen so it doesn’t obscure whatever you were doing in the first place.

I should point out that I haven’t had a chance to thoroughly test Sidecar, that feature that lets you connect an iPad to a Mac for use as a secondary display or a drawing tablet with the Apple Pencil. As of the day we’re publishing this review, macOS Catalina (and therefore Sidecar itself) is only available in beta form, so I’ll revisit this part of the review once all the final software is available.

iPadOS review

Oh, and if you really wanted to, you can finally use a mouse with iPadOS. I wouldn’t recommend it, though. You have to dig into your tablet’s accessibility settings to enable AssistiveTouch, plug in the mouse or connect it via Bluetooth, make sure your mouse sensitivity is set to a manageable level, define what (if anything) you want your mouse’s other buttons to do, and then finally get down to business. The process is slightly cumbersome, and there’s no question that iPadOS — improved as it is — isn’t meant to be used with a mouse yet. The thing you have to keep in mind that this is an accessibility feature, not something meant to redefine how most people use their tablets. It works, but it’s not going to magically turn your iPad into a Surface Pro.

US sanctions two Russians for meddling in 2018 midterm elections

[ad_1]

Thanks to the Mueller Report, we know that the IRA exposed 126 million Americans on Facebook to Russian-backed propaganda during the 2016 US presidential election. The group attempted to use disinformation to sway the 2018 midterm elections, too. US Cyber Command took the IRA offline on the day of the elections, and the Department of Justice later stated that foreign meddling had no impact on the outcome.

“While today’s action only targets Russian actors, the U.S. Government is safeguarding our democratic processes from adversaries — primarily Russia, Iran, and China — that may be seeking to influence the upcoming 2020 elections,” the Treasury said in a press release.

This isn’t the first time the US has imposed sanctions on Russian nationals, and it’s hard to say if the move will really change anything. It may be more symbolic than practical. Hopefully, the efforts do help safeguard the upcoming 2020 election, which is already at risk of being hacked and swayed by disinformation campaigns.

Instagram reminders make sure you don’t forget the latest fashion drops

[ad_1]

Instagram users who see a preview for a sweater or a pair of sneakers they want to buy can opt in for a release reminder via a sticker in an Instagram Story or a launch tag in their feed. They’ll receive a notification 15 minutes before the drop so they can log in and get ready to pull the trigger before the product sells out.

Frustrating product releases are the norm for sneaker collectors, with hyped shoes selling out in seconds. Apps like Nike’s SNKRS have tried to curb fans’ FOMO with reminders similar to Instagram’s new feature. That said, it’s not uncommon for app users to still strike out when trying to grab the latest drops, thanks to a combination of high demand and the use of sneaker bots, which automatically purchase an item faster than any human could.

The reminder feature’s pilot test will include brands like Adidas, H&M, Mr. Porter, Highsnobiety and Warby Parker. Shoppers who click on the notification will arrive at a page powered by Instagram’s in-app purchasing feature called Checkout, which will allow them to complete the purchase. Checkout was released in March for a limited number of brands and influencers. The company says it hopes to add brands daily as the offering matures. Whether or not the reminder function will be available for all brands using Checkout isn’t clear, but it would make sense given that the notifications will ostensibly increase sales and earn revenue for both the brands and Instagram.

Fox Sports will stream ALCS games in 4K HDR for the first time

[ad_1]

There will be other technical marvels if 4K HDR doesn’t pass muster, although some of this will have to wait until the World Series. You can watch 4D Replays (really, adjustable 3D) of World Series batter swings and home base attempts, follow the path of balls in 3D through Pitchcast and see whole-stadium views through FlyCam. And yes, Fox is dabbling with 8K. It’s partnering with Sony to take an 8K camera to “select” World Series games to both record them at ultra-high resolution and use the sheer number of pixels to zoom in on key scenes. You likely won’t be watching live games at full quality on an 8K TV, but the technology to make it happen is rapidly approaching.
