DTS Sound Unbound improves spatial audio for PC games

[ad_1]

At launch, DTS Sound Unbound supports 11 games, including Gears 5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Metro: Exodus. At first glance, that’s not a lot of games out of the gate, but it turns out Dolby Access — Dolby’s take on the same concept — only supports 12 titles itself. In fact, both apps support more or less the same handful of games. Unlike Dolby Access, DTS Sound Unbound isn’t available on the Xbox One yet, though support is on the way.

You can try out DTS Sound Unbound for two weeks for free, though you’ll need to make a one-time in-app purchase to continue using the tech with your headphones. The $19.99 package includes both DTS Headphone:X and DTS:X. The latter works with movies and TV shows. Alternatively, you can purchase DTS:X by itself for $9.99. By comparison, it costs $14.99 to buy the Dolby Atmos app for headphones.

It’s not a surprise to see DTS go after gamers. Like audiophiles, most gamers are willing to spend a bit extra to get more out of their setups. The company has likely also felt a pinch from Dolby, which has been aggressive about adding Atmos to almost anything that can support the format.

iPhone exploit could allow permanent jailbreak for millions of devices

[ad_1]

Twitter user axi0mX revealed the bootrom exploit, dubbed checkm8, that makes it possible to jailbreak the devices. As The Verge explains, bootrom exploits take advantage of a vulnerability in the initial code that iOS devices load when they boot up. Because it’s read-only memory (ROM), Apple can’t overwrite or patch it through a software update. In other words, it’s permanent.

Fortunately, the exploit requires physical access to a phone and has to be carried out over USB, so while hundreds of millions of iPhones are at risk, it’s unlikely that many of them will be impacted. As far as we know, there’s no jailbreak using the checkm8 exploit yet. But there is a risk that the exploit could be developed and not require physical access in the future, which could leave millions of devices vulnerable. We’ve reached out to Apple for comment on this and will update the story if we hear anything.

Kano’s latest coding kit is a Star Wars-themed motion sensor

[ad_1]

If you want to force push a Tie Fighter, though, you’ll need to assemble some code first. Like previous Kano products, the bulk of your time will be spent tweaking puzzle-like programming pieces inside the app. These blocks dictate what is shown on screen and, more importantly, how they react to your hand movements in the real world. One challenge, for instance, might teach you how to wield a lightsaber, while another shows you how to raise an X-wing like Luke did in The Empire Strikes Back.

Once you’ve completed a lesson, you’ll be free to tweak the project or create a new one from scratch. Custom projects can be shared on Star Wars Kano World, a simple but functional social network that lets you view, download and rework other people’s creations. The company has also promised to support the kit with additional challenges post-launch.

If you’re interested, Star Wars The Force Coding Kit will launch on October 4th for $79.99/£79.99. It will be sold through Kano’s website and select retailers in the US, UK and Canada, including Amazon, Target and Best Buy.

It’s not the first time Kano has collaborated with a big brand. Last year, Kano released a physical wand that lets you create and manipulate iconic spells from the Harry Potter universe. The company has teamed up with Microsoft, too, on a Windows 10 computer that is scheduled to ship next month. Chief executive Alex Klein is adamant, though, that Kano hasn’t given up on its crowdfunded trio of physical computing kits. The Kickstarter ended in September 2016, but to date only one of the products — a charming and educational programmable light board — has reached backers and store shelves. The company is offering refunds, at least, to anyone who doesn’t want to wait any longer for the speaker or camera kit.

Adobe previews expanded controls for Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill

[ad_1]

When it’s time to create the sampling area, you’ll have three options: rectangular, auto and custom. The rectangular option creates a box around your selection and takes pixels from that box — this is how Content-Aware Fill works now. In the next release, the auto option will scan the image and create fill with pixels that match those immediately around the object you’re erasing. The custom option lets you hand-pick which pixels Photoshop will use.

We might expect more details on Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill at Adobe MAX. The annual conference begins November 4th. We’ll keep our fingers crossed, too, that Adobe brings these controls to After Effects, which got the Content-Aware Fill tool last year.

How ILMxLAB’s ‘Vader Immortal’ is bringing ‘Star Wars’ into VR

[ad_1]

“We’ve helped a lot of studios and IP owners make experiences that were a good but fairly slight, and essentially functionally demos or adjacent to other experiences or movie,” said Colum Slevin, head of media at Oculus’s AR/VR Experiences Group. “And then for the ILMxLAB team to show up and say no, we want to make a canonical, integral three part narrative that exists in the universe but stands on its own, we were sold.”

It also helps that the ILMxLAB team has the full support of the entire Star Wars franchise, Finley says. The folks at Skywalker Sound can help them craft an experience that sounds and feels just like the movies. And most importantly, the Star Wars Story Group team helps them weave their storyline into the series’ canon. “Those guys have giant throbbing brains filled with all of the story of the world,” Finley said.

That’s how Vader Immortal gets into truly deep cut Star Wars territory. The first episode taps into moments from the prequel films, and you’ll end up encountering a mysterious artifact called the “Protoblade,” an early medieval-looking lightsaber, this time around. Of course, all of those geeky beats have to be balanced with telling a solid story.

“The Story Group particularly is against fan service for it’s own sake,” Snow said. “And I think we are too… I think it’s better for us as artists in xLAB to be creating this stuff that’s our story and, not just, this is sort of an advertisement for something else. That’s not what we want to do.”

While Finley and Snow couldn’t say much about what ILMxLAB is doing next, it’s clear that the company is learning from the success of Vader Immortal. Perhaps next time, we’ll have a full season’s worth of Star Wars VR to dive into.

Disney deal will keep ESPN on PlayStation Vue for years to come

[ad_1]

It wouldn’t be surprising if Sony paid a premium compared to the deal announced in 2015. Disney’s channel offerings have expanded considerably since then, and that’s not including any cost increases for existing channels. And like other streaming TV providers, PlayStation Vue is highly dependent on sports. Sony might not have much choice if it wants to satisfy live sports fans, even if the decision eventually leads to rate hikes.

Nike’s Adapt Huarache are self-lacing sneakers you’ll actually want to wear

[ad_1]

Look, if I had my pick of self-lacing shoes to own, it would be the 2016 Nike Mags. You know, the ones from Back to the Future. But, those were limited-edition and Nike only made 89 pairs total (and I’m not about to drop $75,000 to buy them on a resale app). The Adapt BB and Adapt Huarache cost $350 each, which is much less than the $720 HyperAdapt 1.0, Nike’s first consumer self-lacing sneakers. Even $350 is still a steep price to pay for kicks, but since Nike can’t keep the Adapt BB or Adapt Huarache in stock, clearly sneakerheads aren’t fazed.

We’ll see if Puma has the same luck with its “Fit Intelligence” self-lacing shoes, which are expected to arrive in spring 2020 for $330.

Nike

Similar to the Adapt BBs, the auto-lacing Huaraches can be controlled with an iOS or Android app. That said, if you want the most futuristic experience out of them, you’ll need an Apple device. I, for one, have Adapt Huaraches paired to my iPhone 11 Pro Max (terrible name, by the way, Apple), which lets me use voice commands to control my sneakers. With Siri Shortcuts, you can quickly adjust the laces or check the battery, all simply with your voice. You can have up to five different commands in the Nike Adapt app, which let you tell Siri to do things like “loosen my sneakers,” “check my sneaker batteries” or “switch my sneaker lights.”

Additionally, if you have an Apple Watch, you can tighten or loosen the fit right from your wrist — in case you don’t want to use one of the two physical LED buttons on the shoes. That, along with the Siri integration, make the Adapt Huaraches immediately feel like something out of a sci-fi film. Because it’s not every day that I can get ready for work, put my shoes on and, right before I walk out the door say, “Hey Siri, lace up my sneakers.”

Tom Holland’s ‘Uncharted’ movie may have found its latest director

[ad_1]

Sony has been trying for many years to get an adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit game series off the ground. With the latest approach, Holland is set to play a younger version of Nathan Drake in a prequel. Production is slated to start early next year with a December 2020 release date. However, with reports of Disney and Sony agreeing a deal for another Spider-Man movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 2021, it remains to be seen whether Holland will have to don his Spider Suit again before filming the Uncharted movie.

If Knight does take the reins, he’ll follow in the footsteps of several others. The most recent filmmaker to depart the director’s chair is Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane). Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) and David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) were also slated to direct at various points.
