Starship’s delivery robots now serve Purdue University

The bot maker is in the early stages of an expansion that will have thousands of machines serving campuses within the next two years. Students at George Mason University and Northern Arizona University already have access to the robotic couriers, while the University of Pittsburgh should have access later in September.

There’s a fairly simple logic at work here. The campus rollouts let Starship serve communities without having to wait for permission to operate on public streets. It’s also a way to refine the technology in a relatively safe, contained environment before there’s a wider deployment. Don’t fret if you’ve long since graduated, then — you may get more perks (if just a wider choice of food) in return for the wait.

LG plugs NVIDIA G-Sync into its 2019 OLED TVs

At CES in January NVIDIA promised more big-screen G-Sync-compatible displays were coming and now LG says they’re already here. A firmware update for its 2019 OLED TVs will roll out soon adding support for the feature promising “smooth, tear-free immersion” with compatible PC games. That should make them an ideal setup for gamers seeking big screens with imperceptible response times, as long as the company can quell worries about burn-in.

Other features in its 2019 lineup that make the TVs appealing for gaming include HDMI 2.1 features like variable refresh rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). NVIDIA marketing exec Matt Wuebbling said in a statement that “We are excited to bring G-SYNC Compatible support to LG’s 2019 OLED TVs and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate support to our GeForce RTX 20-Series GPUs.”

Until now, if you wanted G-Sync and a big screen you needed to opt for HP’s $5,000 65-inch Omen X Emperium set, but these options are great for both gaming and Netflix, with lower price tags to boot. However, that set carries NVIDIA’s G-Sync Ultimate tag, while LG’s are stamped G-Sync Compatible because they don’t use NVIDIA’s processors.

EA’s Project Atlas cloud gaming launches tonight in closed beta

In addition to testing this progression, the trial will also gauge how well EA’s streaming works in real-life situations where jitter, lag and other obstacles can sour the experience. EA is betting that it can minimize these issues by using Amazon Web Services and the “public cloud” to place servers closer to gamers and improve reliability.

The publisher hasn’t said if or when it expects to premiere a full-fledged service. As with rivals like Google Stadia and Microsoft’s Project xCloud, EA is dreaming of a day when you can play its games on virtually any device with a screen, whether it’s a computer, mobile device or a smart TV. The trial is both a step toward that goal and a peek at the future, even if practical service isn’t ready for a long while.

More ‘The Last of Us Part II’ details will emerge on September 24th

Naughty Dog has been fairly quiet about The Last of Us Part II since E3 2018. You’re about to hear a lot more, though. The studio has sent invitations for a media event that will discuss the post-apocalyptic action game in greater detail. While details aren’t forthcoming at this stage, it won’t be surprising if you hear a lot more about gameplay, the plot, and possibly a release schedule.

‘PES 2020’ isn’t perfect, but it’s good enough to rival ‘FIFA 20’

Another new feature in eFootball PES 2020 is “Matchday,” a mode that lets players choose their favorite team and synchronize games to the schedule from professional leagues. This is similar to FIFA’s Match Day Live, which is also designed to make the game feel more in-line with what’s happening out in the real world. For instance, if Manchester United and Arsenal are playing each other one week and you play with either team and win, your points will be added to the total from PES 2020 online community, particularly those who are fans of the same club as you.

The goal with Matchday is for you to help your favorite team win as much as possible in PES 2020, so that it can be at the top of the standings and, of course, give you bragging rights over your friends.

“Edgarito” in “Become a Legend.”

My favorite mode in PES 2020, though, is “Become a Legend.” It’s not new to this year’s game, but it’s still a perfect way to pass the time and enjoy playing with and against teams you wouldn’t choose on a regular basis. Become a Legend, in case you haven’t played it before, lets you create your own player and pretend to live the career of a footballer. The player I created isn’t very good (yet), and the team I ended up on is one of Italy’s worst (Cagliari), but that’s why I like it: because it makes you have to keep playing to make him and your team better, since in the early years of your career you’re far from being a star.

I do wish Become a Legend was as realistic and cinematic as FIFA’s “The Journey” mode, since it would make it more fun to have a story that forces you to make every-day life decisions. That said, you do see Ronaldo make a cameo sporadically, even if you can’t have your made-up player interact with him.

All in all, I have to give it to Konami for not giving up on Pro Evolution Soccer after the disappointment of losing the Champions League rights in 2018. The company could’ve easily let the game go in a downward spiral back then but, instead, it has kept working to make the game better for fans who have loved it despite its shortcomings over the years. eFootball PES 2020, isn’t perfect by any means, but at the very least, it’s a sign that the franchise is alive and well. Now we wait to see if FIFA 20 is really as great as it promising to be.

BET+ starts streaming on September 19th

At launch, BET+ says it will feature more than 1,000 hours of programming, all of it available to watch on both iOS and Android as well as a variety of other streaming devices. With Tyler Perry playing a major role in BET+, the streaming service will be the official home of the filmmaker’s back catalog of work. There will also be stand-up specials from the likes of Nick Cannon, Lil Rel of Get Out fame and Saturday Night Live alum Sasheer Zamata, among others. Moving forward, the service says it plans to launch a new original production “almost every month” over the course of its first year of availability.

BET+ is just one of a couple of streaming services launching this fall, with both Disney+ and Apple TV+ coming later in the year. The service feels it can both survive and thrive in a crowded marketplace by catering to African Americans, a demographic the service says is underserved by the big players.

New prosthetic legs let amputees feel their foot and knee in real-time

The researchers worked with two patients with above-the-knee, or transfemoral, amputations. They used an Össur prosthetic leg, which comes with a microprocessor and an angle sensor in the knee joint, IEEE Spectrum explains. The team then added an insole with seven sensors to the foot. Those sensors transmit signals in real-time, via Bluetooth to a controller strapped to the user’s ankle. An algorithm in the controller encodes the feedback into neural signals and delivers that to a small implant in the patient’s tibial nerve, at the back of the thigh. The brain can then interpret those signals as feedback from the knee and foot.

The modified prosthetic helped the users walk faster, feel more confident and consume less oxygen — an indication that it was less strenuous than traditional prosthesis. The team also tested activating the tibial nerve implant to relieve phantom limb pain. Both patients saw a significant reduction in pain after a few minutes of electrical stimulation, but they had to be connected to a device in a lab to receive the treatment. With more testing, the researchers hope they might be able to bring these technologies to more amputees and make both available outside of the lab.

FCC wants to fine CBS for using fake emergency alert in ‘Young Sheldon’

To avoid confusion and to make sure viewers and listeners don’t brush off alerts as false alarms, the agency doesn’t allow EAS tones or simulations of them to be broadcast outside of public service announcements, official tests or genuine emergencies. “CBS’s modifications to the EAS tones did not make broadcasting such tones permissible because the audio elements used in the episode were substantially similar to the actual EAS tones,” the FCC said in a statement. As such, it proposed a $272,000 against the broadcaster.

The agency recently reached settlements with ABC, AMC, Meruelo Radio and Discovery over similar infractions. It fined Jimmy Kimmel Live $395,000 for using the actual EAS tone and The Walking Dead $104,000 as part of a $600,000 round of civil penalties last month.

Google faces antitrust investigation from 50 state attorneys general

If Google is found to have acted in a way that broke the US’s antitrust rules, the company could be forced to divest itself of parts of its business, including YouTube. Alternatively, the company could be forced to change how its key money-making algorithms work.
