There is an improvement that can help your daytime activities. Fit users on iOS now get route maps for their walks and bike rides, much like their Android counterparts do. This includes workouts tracked through smartwatches and linked mobile apps.

The updates are rolling out over the course of the next week. They’re simple additions, but they should help Google Fit provide a more holistic view of your fitness that extends well beyond your gym sessions and morning runs.

‘Halo’ TV series has its Cortana ahead of early 2021 premiere

The series will also feature Fargo‘s Bokeem Woodbine as Soren-066, an ex-military privateer who conflicts with Master Chief. Famed Indian actress Shabana Azmi will play Office of Naval Intelligence head Admiral Margaret Parangosky. Other additions are playing Spartans, including Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s Bentley Kalu, The Witcher‘s Natasha Culzac and Catastrophe‘s Kate Kennedy.

The series doesn’t go into production until later this year, and it’s only due to air sometime in the first quarter of 2021. The new details indicate that Showtime really is committed to the project, though, and that includes providing the star power you see in other high-profile productions.

Turkey requires broadcast licenses for online media providers

It’s not certain just what standards these online services will have to obey, and that’s part of the problem. President Erdogan’s regime has frequently blocked content and services to stifle political dissent, and experts are worried that this is just a pretext to suppress TV shows and news outlets that might challenge the ruling AK party’s authority.

Netflix told Reuters it was following events and wanted to keep serving Turkey. That’s not the primary concern, though. Rather, it’s that companies like Netflix may have to pull some of their library, forcing Turkish viewers to either use VPNs to access the service or go without any material that challenges their government.

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp went down (again)

We’ve asked Facebook if it can comment on the outage.

There has been a string of problems across the services in recent months, with roots in everything from server configurations to the previously mentioned media services. It’s not clear why they’ve picked up after a long period of relative stability. However, Facebook has continued to grow rapidly in recent months, with 2.4 billion monthly active users as well as 2.7 billion people using its combined apps (including Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger) in a similar period. That’s a lot of demand to deal with, even for a company with a vast infrastructure.

French inventor is first to cross English Channel using a hoverboard

It took a second try, but Franky Zapata has become the first to cross the English Channel using a hoverboard. The French inventor used his jet-powered Flyboard Air to travel the 22 miles from France to England in 22 minutes, briefly landing on a boat to replace his kerosene-filled backpack. The board wasn’t slow, either — Zapata said he reached speeds up to 106MPH during his journey.

NASA solar probe sends back data from its first two visits

Parker’s ground team found out soon after launch that the probe is capable of a higher downlink rate. In fact, they’re taking advantage of that ability by instructing the probe to send back even more data from the second encounter in April. During that event, the spacecraft’s four suites of science instruments kept busy collecting information. That’s why the mission team is expecting to receive an additional 25GB of science data between July 24th and August 15th.

The mission team will release the data from the first two encounters to the public later this year. Before that happens, the spacecraft will conduct its third flyby, which will start on August 27th and reach closest approach on September 1st. Researchers are hoping that over the net few years the mission can gather the information we need to unravel some of the sun’s biggest mysteries, including why the sun’s corona (its aura of plasma) is far hotter than its visible surface.

Electric SUV will include a 5G link to connected cities

The six-seater is loaded with other tricks. You can use facial recognition to unlock the doors in addition to your phone or a key fob. The rear doors include both rear-hinged doors and small gullwings that can operate independently — there’s even a “parade mode” that only opens the gullwings to let you greet your adoring public. The lights are programmable to beam patterns (including on the road), and the cabin is loaded with nine screens that border on overkill.

It should be a decent performer, as well, with two 268HP motors, a 3.9-second 0-62MPH time and a claimed 400-mile range. It’ll be capable of Level 3 autonomy (that is, conditional self-driving).

As with many startups like this, though, Human Horizons is a long way from production. It won’t be ready for its native China until 2021, and there’s no mention of when it might reach other countries. Pricing is also an unknown.

The pedigree might be there, though. The company’s technical development has been led by Mark Stanton, a veteran of Ford and Jaguar Land Rover, while company co-founders Ding Lei and Kevin Chen had key roles in regional division s for Ford, GM and GM, among others. The experience is there — the challenge is translating that to a tangible car you can buy.

First FAA-approved beyond-line-of-sight drone flies in the US

University of Alaska’s test flight, according to Drone Life, used a hybrid electric drone to inspect a four-mile section of the Trans-Alaska pipeline. Since the test’s objective was to fly the drone for the inspection’s whole duration with no human involvement, the team had to load it with an on-board technology by Iris Automation called the Casia system. It’s a sense-and-avoid technology that can detect other aircraft and make intelligent decisions on what kind of threat they pose to the drone. The Casia system worked with the eight ground-based radars the team installed along the route.

Cathy Cahill, the director of the university’s drone program, told Reuters that BVLOS flights are important for Alaska due to the lack of roads in remote areas. The test is a milestone for the drone industry as a whole, though. As FAA acting Administrator Dan Elwell said, it advances the industry toward the reliable integration of drones into the airspace.
