Watch this ‘Heartman’ cutscene to learn more about ‘Death Stranding’

[ad_1]

Hideo Kojima’s upcoming “cinematic adventure” game for PlayStation 4 is still quite a mystery, but this Death Stranding trailer that debuted at Comic-Con last week reveals more about it. Leaks of the video appeared online recently, but now you can watch it at home in full quality, as the character “Heartman” — based on filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn — explains his connection to the world.

As you may guess by his name, his heart stops every 21 minutes, allowing him to spend three minutes in “the world of the dead” before he’s shocked back to life… for another 21 minutes. Death Stranding will be released November 8th, with a long list of featured stars including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Troy Baker and Guillermo del Toro.

Madden 20 Championship Series ties its schedule to NFL events

[ad_1]

Just a few months after EA announced its Madden NFL 19 bowl set new viewership records, it’s laid out a schedule of events for the 2020 season. Madden NFL 20 launches next week on August 2nd — or three days earlier for people who pre-order a special edition — and it’s touting the ability for players to go “from couch to champion.”

EA has announced that it’s increased the number of spots available in online eliminations, with its first Classic event scheduled to occur starting August 30th. There, fans will compete to represent one of the NFL’s 32 teams at the Club Championship in December. Then there’s the Madden NFL 20 Challenge during Super Bowl weekend and the Madden NFL 20 Bowl during next year’s draft.

The NFL and EA have aligned the esports schedule to work along with the league, seeing it as a way to keep viewers and gamers engaged. NFL VP of Gaming & Esports Rachel Hoagland said in a statement that “We view esports as a key accelerant to growing the NFL. It enables new ways for young fans to engage in the sport through Madden NFL competition.” The league has also snagged sponsors including Pizza Hut and Snickers, and this year signed up the first “virtual stadium rights deal in esports” that will put MCS Major live events in Pizza Hut Stadium.

In a world where Fortnite exists, making sure gamers still tune into your sport any way you can is probably a good strategy. More details about the esports events were announced tonight during a Twitch stream that you can watch right here.

IRS reminds 10,000 taxpayers that cryptocurrency is subject to taxes

[ad_1]

In a press release, IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said:

“Taxpayers should take these letters very seriously by reviewing their tax filings and when appropriate, amend past returns and pay back taxes, interest and penalties. The IRS is expanding our efforts involving virtual currency, including increased use of data analytics. We are focused on enforcing the law and helping taxpayers fully understand and meet their obligations.”

The IRS considers cryptocurrency taxable just like any other property transaction. If you’re paid in crypto by an employer, your earnings are subject to federal income tax withholding and payroll taxes. If you earn cryptocurrency as an independent contractor, you’ll have to file a 1099. If you sell crypto, you could have to pay capital gains tax, and if you’re mining, that should be reported in your gross income. While cryptocurrency may have once felt cutting edge, getting a letter from the IRS stating that you owe back taxes makes it automatically less cool.

‘WannaCry hero’ Marcus Hutchins sentenced to supervised release

[ad_1]

There could still be serious consequences. Although Hutchins has been living in Los Angeles since the charges came to pass, Stadtmueller warned that the sentence will likely prevent the security researcher from re-entering the US.

This isn’t likely to satisfy people who argued Hutchins should avoid any punishment given his efforts. It’s still good news for him, though, and may help the security industry at large. On top of snapping up the kill switch domain that halted WannaCry, Hutchins has also conducted important research on botnets and malware infections. He even livestreams some efforts to show how you can reverse-engineer malware and develop effective counters. Those efforts will continue now that Hutchins is effectively free, even if there are conditions attached.

Hulu’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ renewed for a fourth season

[ad_1]

Since it debuted two years ago, The Handmaid’s Tale has been a major hit for Hulu. It’s apparently the platform’s most-watched series overall, including originals and licensed shows, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise Hulu renewed it. Only three episodes (from the second season) were eligible for this year’s Emmy awards, but the 2017 Outstanding Drama Series winner still racked up an impressive 11 nominations.

Standalone Cortana app available to Windows Insiders

[ad_1]

As part of the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18945, Insiders in the Fast ring can preview a handful of new features. The updated assistant supports light and dark themes in Windows. It has a less intrusive “Hey Cortana” screen that’s meant to minimize disruptions. Microsoft also updated the speech and language models, an attempt to make the chat-based UI better at processes speech and text queries. Not all of the previous Cortana features have made their way to the beta, but Microsoft says it plans to add them over time.

These updates come just days after Microsoft announced it’s changing the look of the Xbox One’s Home screen and how you control the console via Cortana. Those changes should roll out to everyone this fall. As for the standalone Cortana app, The Verge says we’ll have to wait until the first half of 2020 to see that deploy across Windows 10.

It’s time to take Google’s Pixel phones more seriously

[ad_1]

Of course, that can’t all be attributed to the Pixel 3a and Google hasn’t broken down what exactly pushed this growth. The pricier Pixel 3s have gone on sale a few times since their launch, which could have helped drive numbers up. But it’s almost a no-brainer: the company is selling more units, simply by offering more options and at a lower price. It’s not just about the affordability, though. The Pixel 3a doesn’t compromise too much for the reduced price, which might have helped it shake off some of the stigma that comes with cheaper phones.

The 3a has a smaller, lower-res OLED screen and slower processor than the 3, and is missing water resistance and a second front camera. But compare that to the iPhone XR, which is fatter and has a less-sharp LCD panel compared to the XS’ Retina OLED. The XR also loses the second rear camera from its flagship sibling. It’s not a big step down, but the XR’s $750 price makes its tradeoffs harder to take.

Apple iPhone XR

Google is by no means the first to offer quality midrange handsets for lower prices, but its approach has been unique. To make up for less-advanced hardware like a slower processor and a lack of the Pixel Visual Core, the company optimized its software to make the Pixel 3a’s UI and camera app feel about as fast as the Pixel 3. Other phone makers have tried similar techniques, but Google has proven it is the undisputed champ in this arena. Just look at Assistant features like Duplex and Call Screening, or what the Pixel 3’s camera can capture with a single lens. Some of Google’s most ambitious features like a super-fast Assistant or AR directions in Maps, come to Pixels first, too. Software is the muscle Google can keep flexing and deservedly so.

Methods that other “affordable premium” phone makers have tried include marketing directly to consumers instead of splurging on expensive advertising campaigns. Google’s focused on closing potential performance gaps with advanced software makes the Pixel 3a a powerful signal of the company’s unique ability to rise above the limits of hardware.

With the cheaper phone, Google was also able to prove that it can deliver a mostly smooth product launch. Since Android Pie had been available publicly for months by the time the Pixel 3a launched, the device saw fewer problems related to the OS upgrade compared to the bug-plagued arrival of its flagship sibling.
