Apple Music student trials now last for six months

[ad_1]

Apple

Apparently, the memo also says that students who are eligible will still only be signing up for three months of free subscription — they’ll get a follow-up email within that period with instructions on how to redeem three more months of free membership. That said, it’s not entirely clear if the offer is available outside the US and Canada, and students from those countries must verify that they’re truly in college before they can enjoy the freebie.

In addition to a six-month trial period, Apple is also giving away a free pair of Beats Studio3 headphones with eligible Mac and iPad purchases. We doubt anybody would buy a Mac or an iPad just for a free pair of Beats, but it’s a nice perk for those getting one anyway.

The Instant Vortex Plus can bake, broil and roast. Alongside all the frying.Instant Pot joins the air-fryer craze with the Vortex Plus

Now Instant Pot made pressure cooking cool again, the company behind it is turning to another kitchen trend: air fryers. The Instant Vortex Plus is a seven-in-one air fryer that promises the company’s usual versatility for more cooking modes. On top of its marquee feature, it can also bake, broil, dehydrate, reheat, roast and rotate an included rotisserie spit. Will it make mediocre fries like other air fryers? Probably. But if you want to make chicken and french fries, you might not need any other equipment.

Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro, discounts the Air

The MacBook Air now starts at an easier-to-swallow $1,099 (conveniently $999 for students) and introduces a True Tone display to the lineup. The 13-inch base MacBook Pro, meanwhile, finally has a quad-core, 8th-generation Intel chip, but there’s no version to buy without a Touch Bar or TouchID scanner. It starts at $1,299 with 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD.

Part two.
Apple killed the 12-inch MacBook

The laptop appeared in 2015 and ushered in a new era of MacBook design for Apple — it was the first to use USB-C, the first with the controversial and problematic butterfly keyboard and the first Mac laptop in years without a glowing Apple logo. After upgrades came to other Apple laptops, however, it felt underpowered, and now it’s gone.

The fight starts in 2020.
HBO Max will be the exclusive streaming home of ‘Friends’

AT&T’s WarnerMedia finally has a name for its streaming service — and some unfortunate news for people hoping it would share some classic shows. The new platform will be named HBO Max and will unsurprisingly use HBO’s material as its base on top of originals and shows from other Warner networks.

The service will debut later than originally expected, in spring 2020, but should have “10,000 hours” of material, including already announced projects like Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: The Sisterhood, the Anna Kendrick-led comedy series Love Life and an animated prequel series for Gremlins. Most notably, it promises exclusive rights “at launch” to every episode of Friends, The Fresh Prince and Pretty Little Liars.

Limited range is one of the few things holding back this $21,000 bike.
Zero’s SR/F electric motorcycle is a great commuter bike

Instead of blending into the sea of motorcycles, the SR/F sticks out in a way Zero’s other electric models never did. The updated Z-Force motor is smack dab in the center of the bike, and the battery pack has orange accents. Plus, its app, a new full-color LCD and the bike’s 3G connection make it smarter than most anything else out there on two wheels.

But wait, there’s more…

Amazon’s Alexa will give medical advice from the NHS

[ad_1]

Heralded as a world first, the collaboration is designed to help patients — such as the elderly and blind — who can’t access the internet through traditional means, which could reduce pressure on the NHS and local GPs. Plus, of course, by linking directly to official and reliable NHS information, users are less likely to stumble upon random medical advice — anyone who’s ever Googled their symptoms knows how much of a minefield that can be.

YouTube revamps its copyright claim system for creators

[ad_1]

To prevent unscrupulous individuals from abusing the system, YouTube says it will revoke a user’s access to manual claims if they repeatedly fail to provide accurate manual timestamps. YouTube scans video uploads against a database of files, so its content ID technology can find visual and audio matches. Any possible copyright infringement instances found during that process leads to automated content ID claims — a “manual claim” is what YouTube calls complaints wherein the copyright owners themselves report the unauthorized use of their property.

The manual claim’s recipient will see the timestamp indicated by the reporting party, making it much easier to figure out which part of the video to edit. If they do choose to alter their video instead of disputing the claim, they can use YouTube’s updated editing tools to address the issue. Creators can now easily mute all sounds for the time-stamped segment or swap out the music with one of the platform’s free-to-use songs from its Audio Library.

Finally, they can trim out that segment completely if they believe that’s the best course of action. YouTube says it will continue beefing up its editing tools and will eventually give creators a way to trim claimed segments with just a single click. “Our work won’t stop here. We’re always looking to find ways to improve the creator copyright experience while also balancing the rights of copyright owners,” Julian Bill, YouTube’s Product Manager, wrote. The changes YouTube has rolled out already make dealing with copyright claims a lot less painful, but we hope the other features it comes up with can help make the experience even better.

Telsa’s Model 3 can now use DC fast chargers across the US

[ad_1]

Tesla Superchargers are widely distributed, so Model 3 pilots rarely need access to third-party chargers. Still, CEO Elon Musk promised that the EV would be CHAdeMO compatible when it launched, and that was two years ago. It might be a case of timing — Tesla is about to start Model 3 deliveries in Japan, where CHAdeMO charging reigns supreme.

Tesla Model 3

Tesla Model 3 with a CCS port

Most DC chargers across North America are compatible with the CCS and CHAdeMO systems. However, while Tesla uses CHAdeMO stateside, it has switched to CCS (shown above) in Europe since it’s the most common standard there. That switch has led to hopes that Musk might one day open up its exclusive Supercharger network to other EV manufacturers.

The third-party DC chargers are limited to 50kW compared to 150kW max for a Supercharger, but if you happen to be in the sticks without a Supercharger in sight, it’s 100 percent better than nothing. As Tesla points out, except for rare cases, DC chargers usually require a subscription and are generally more costly than Superchargers. So, if you plan to use CHAdeMO with firms like Electrify America or ChargePoint, you’ll likely need to sign up and, if possible, confirm everything works before you leave.

Virgin Orbit preps the LauncherOne rocket for its first drop test

[ad_1]

In fact, Virgin Orbit will release a fully built and fully loaded LauncherOne during that flight. The company says it will be gathering data on a lot of things, but the first drop test is mostly about the first few seconds after release. It’s how the company can find out whether the rocket can cleanly break free from its carrier aircraft, a modified 747, and how it can observe the LauncherOne free falling through the air.

“This upcoming drop test is a huge deal for our team. It represents the last major step of a development program we began in 2015, focused not just on designing a rocket but proving it out alongside the modified 747 that serves as our flying launchpad,” Virgin Orbit wrote in its announcement.

While there’s no definite date for the launch yet, the company’s carrier aircraft and test rocket are ready to go anytime. Virgin Orbit is just coordinating with authorities to secure the airspace over the Edwards Air Force Base before announcing when the flight will take place.

Netflix’s ‘Another Life’ trailer shows Katee Sackhoff back in space

[ad_1]

It’s been a while since we heard about this 10-episode sci-fi series from Netflix that features Battlestar Galactica and Longmire star Katee Sackhoff, but now there’s a new teaser trailer for Another Life. According to the synopsis, her character Niko Breckenridge is on an interstellar mission to find the origin of a massive alien artifact after it lands on Earth, while her husband stays home investigating it.

As you might have guessed, the mission doesn’t appear to be going well, however the trailer doesn’t explain quite what threat anyone is facing. Selma Blair and Justin Chatwin are also appearing in the Aaron Martin (Slasher) created show. We won’t have to wait long to find out what the deal is — Another Life premieres July 25th.

Nintendo Switch Online adds a ‘rewind’ button to NES games next week

[ad_1]

For July, Nintendo is adding Wrecking Crew and Donkey Kong 3 to the list of classic NES titles that Switch Online subscribers can play, but the biggest news is a feature that will work across the entire library: Rewind. Similar to a feature that Nintendo put in last year’s SNES Classic Edition and that Capcom included in its Mega Man Legacy Collection, the gameplay rewind lets players instantly pause, seek through the last few moments of play and try things all over again.

Mars crew could 3D-print skin and bones for injuries

[ad_1]

“In the case of burns, for instance, brand new skin could be bioprinted instead of being grafted from elsewhere on the astronaut’s body, doing secondary damage that may not heal easily in the orbital environment,” said Tommaso Ghidini, head of the division at the European Space Agency that oversees the project, in a statement.

Scientists were faced with the unique challenges of creating a technique that would still work in zero gravity. So, the team invented a method of 3D printing that would work while upside down. They thickened human blood plasma, which is used to bioprint skin cells, with plant material so it could work in altered gravity. To 3D print bones, they added calcium phosphate bone cement to printed human stem cells. The calcium phosphate works as a structure-supporting material, and is absorbed by the body as the bone grows.

The samples are just the first steps in a long journey to make this type of 3D printing ready for space. A self-contained spacecraft can only hold so much. The project is looking into what kind of onboard facilities would be needed, such as surgical rooms and equipment, for astronauts to perform the 3D bioprinting on their own. For a look at how the team at ESA were able to create the bioprinted skin and bone, take a look at the videos below.

Players have created over 2 million levels on ‘Super Mario Maker 2’

[ad_1]

Creating a course on Super Mario Maker 2 lets players experience what it’s like to be a game designer and is one of the game’s most unique features — so it’s no surprise that it’s taken off. One Canadian super fan has already rolled out a full 32-course game. Really, anyone can create a level — and if the number of uploads is any indication — everyone has tried. User-created levels can range from brilliant creations by world-class gamers to something your five-year-old cousin could beat in under 20 minutes. There’s a level inspired by the ‘Steamed Hams’ meme from The Simpsons and even one made by Arby’s.

Luckily, Super Mario Maker 2 has a way for players to separate the wheat from the chaff. If you go to the ‘Popular’ tab in the game’s online Course World, you can easily find the courses that are resonating the most with other players.
