Xiaomi has launched its first lineup of OLED “Master Series” TVs in China, starting with a 65-inch model at a pretty interesting price (via Engadget Chinese). Using a 10-bit 4K 120Hz LG OLED panel, it covers 98.5 percent of the DCI-P3 cinema-level color gamut while offering just about every feature you’d want in an OLED set. That includes support for every HDR standard (Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR and HLG), the latest HDMI 2.1 standard and a 65-watt, 5-channel Dolby Atmos speaker system.

It also offers variable refresh, motion compensation and a stellar 1-millisecond response time for gaming, with Xiaomi declaring it “born for the next generation of game consoles.” Naturally, it has extremely narrow bezels, and a modern design with a glass-type base, very narrow bezels and ambient lighting.

The display’s also compatible with the forthcoming iPQ Engine Mobile iOS and Android app. You’ll be able to use certified devices (for instance, Pixel phones and iPhones) to calibrate your TV’s colors more accurately than you’d likely otherwise be able to without dedicated tools.

Both the 6-series and the 8-series include an Auto Game Mode. That recognizes when you’re playing PC or console games to optimize low latency and picture settings.

The 8-Series is now available for pre-order, exclusively at Best Buy. https://t.co/jN1yQ948am pic.twitter.com/SnDSkyA97v

What primarily sets the 8-series apart from the 6-series is its backlight technology. TCL says the 8-series is the first TV to use mini-LED tech. It has more than 25,000 individual lights, through which TCL claims to offer “highly precise local dimming” and “smooth, uniform and bright illumination.” Many LCD TVs have a few hundred standard LEDs. TCL also suggests the 8-series offers beefed-up motion performance for smoother visuals than the 6-series, while it includes a “Premium Pedestal” stand.

The 8-series costs $2,000 for the 65-inch model and $3,000 for the 75-inch variant. The Best Buy product pages suggest the TVs will start shipping next month. TCL also noted 8K versions will be available soon.

This year, both sets of 6-series 4K televisions include quantum dot LED technology — also used recently in Samsung and Vizio TVs — to improve their color performance even further, and the 55-inch version has a few more local dimming LED zones than before. They also are some of TCL’s first with “Auto Game Mode” that automatically detects when you’re playing on a console or PC and need to use low-latency mode. That feature is part of the HDMI 2.1 spec but TCL didn’t say if this is the same as ALLM. Their remote includes voice control, plus the TVs are compatible with both Alexa and Google Assistant.

A 75-inch 6-series with 2019’s specs is supposed to arrive later this year, along with the higher-end 8-series TVs that use a new “mini-LED” backlighting setup with up to 25,000 individual lights. The 8-series TVs will cost $1,999 for a 65-inch, or $2,999 for the 75-inch.

One main reason for that seemingly odd trend is that manufacturers hoarded vast inventories of TVs ahead of a planned 25 percent tariff on Chinese products. However, the US and China cooled their trade war somewhat after a meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping at G20, with Trump confirming the US would not impose that tariff for now. That left manufacturers with mountains of TVs they had to shift, and reducing prices is a key way to clear out the backlog.

Elsewhere, you might see a dip in prices on 32-inch displays this month, as those are said to be in oversupply too. The report also suggests some manufacturers will increase the ratio of production of 55-inch displays, as much as 4 percent year over year, which could also lead to a price drop in screens at that size.
