Sony’s A7s II has been capturing mesmerizing low-light photos and videos ever since it was released in 2015, but five years is a long time to wait for a sequel. (That is, unless you’re a Star Wars fan.) That wait is thankfully nearing its end, though: Sony tweeted a not-so-cryptic teaser earlier today all but confirming that the A7s III would make its official debut at 10AM Eastern on July 28th.

The news wasn’t all that surprising to fans and industry watchers — the company confirmed the camera’s existence and summer launch in an interview with DPReview at the end of June. At the time, Kenji Tanaka, Senior General Manager of Sony’s Digital Imaging Group, told the publication that the company had embarked on a “complete redesign of the whole system, including the image sensor.” Unfortunately, Tanaka’s conversation was a little light on the technical detail.

In the meantime, Sony Alpha Rumors has been dutifully chronicling new spces and features passed along by sources who claim to have been the camera’s early testers. If those claims hold true, the A7s III will pack a new 12-megapixel sensor (not a 15-megapixel sensor as earlier reports suggested), 15 stops of dynamic range, a super high resolution electronic viewfinder, and a new cooling system that should prevent overheating and obviate the need for video recording limits altogether. That last bit is especially crucial as the A7s II quickly become a fan-favorite of filmmakers and YouTube alike.

While we’re on the subject of shooting footage, the A7s III is said to shoot 4K at speeds as high as 120fps, and is reportedly capable of 10-bit 4:2:2 recording. For low-light shooters, the Mk. III is expected to keep the same 409,600 max ISO for video found in the older model. And if you’re more of a vlogger, Sony’s new Alpha cam is expected to pack the same articulated LCD screen found in the company’s recent ZV-1. In other words, the A7s III was designed to serve a very specific purpose, but there’s still a little something there for everyone. At least, that’s what it sounds like right now — we’ll have to wait a week and a half to be sure.

If you’ve applied for the alpha program, you could still get in before the beta, as Microsoft also unveiled the alpha 5 update with a new wave of invitations. The release itself focused on killing more glitches, with fixes to flight dynamics, individual aircraft, multiplayer characteristics, peripherals, weather and more. It’s still paying attention to detail, apparently, as one of the bugs was “snow does not last on the ground surfaces as expected.”

If you decide to jump in, remember that to get the most out of the game (particularly those gorgeous graphics), you’ll need to have a reasonably powerful PC and lots of extra storage — the game reportedly requires about 150GB of space.

To some extent, Sony didn’t have much of a choice but to open its platform. It’s increasingly gunning after pro photographers who would otherwise choose Canon and Nikon gear, and that means supporting real-world workflows instead of insisting on as many Sony tools as possible. No, you probably won’t notice if you’re a hobbyist or street photographer, but this could make all the difference in some fields.

The preview also includes an easier way to customize your dashboard. Hit the View button on your gamepad and you’ll see a screen that makes it easier to set up your home page the way you prefer. This is a very early release, so it could be a while before this reaches more reliable Xbox One software releases. Should that be no obstacle, though, this might be the solution you need the next time you’re wracked by indecision.

You’ve had to be part of a very exclusive club to try Xbox One features in their rawest form — so exclusive the criteria has been “closely guarded,” Microsoft said. Now, though, the company is loosening its restrictions ever so slightly. The Xbox Insider unit is inviting more people to join the Alpha Skip Ahead ring so that it can expand testing for key updates. If you see this before September 23rd at 2:59AM Eastern (11:59PM on September 22nd), you can use the “report a problem” feature in the power menu, choose “add new problem,” pick “future build” and then make a case for why you should be included in the Alpha Skip Ahead program.

If you’ve ever held one of Sony’s APS-C mirrorless shooters, the A6600 and A6100 will feel quite familiar. They’re slightly lighter and less bulky than, say, the full-frame, 61-megapixel A7R IV, which is great for photographers or videographers who would rather carry around a more compact body — and, most importantly perhaps, who aren’t looking to spend a few thousand dollars on a camera. To complement the A6600 and A6100, Sony also announced two E-Mount lenses, the E 16-55mm F2.8 G and E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS. One of the A6600s that was at the event here in NYC was paired with the new super-telephoto zoom, and I do have to say it looked a bit odd on such a small body — though that doesn’t mean it won’t take solid, crispy photos.

We’ll have more on Sony’s new APS-C mirrorless cameras soon, but for now you should know the A6600 will be $1,400 (body-only) when it hits stores in November, while the A6100 is set to arrive in October for $750 (body-only). The E 16-55mm F2.8 and E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS glass, on the other hands, are going to cost you $1,400 (October) and $1,000 (November), respectively. With these, Sony’s now bringing the total number of native E-Mount lenses to 54, which gives it further advantage over competitors like Canon, Nikon and Panasonic.
