How can Genius be sure of this? It says it developed a unique “watermark” — alternating styles of apostrophes that spelled out “red handed” in Morse Code. Thanks to this evidence, it’s now suing the search giant over what it calls “anticompetitive behavior” and is seeking $50 million in combined minimum damages.

In response to the first allegations of copying, Google published a blog post that said, “We do not crawl or scrape websites to source these lyrics. The lyrics that you see in information boxes on Search come directly from lyrics content providers, and they are updated automatically as we receive new lyrics and corrections on a regular basis.” Speaking to Gizmodo back in June, however, Genius’ chief strategy officer Ben Gross said, “[Google] have known about this for two years and it’s clearly unfair and anticompetitive.”

In July, the Department of Justice approved T-Mobile’s $26.5 billion bid to merge with Sprint — on the condition that it sell some of its business to Dish Network. And Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai endorsed the deal. But opposition from so many attorneys general could pose a legitimate threat.

The state attorneys general fear the merger would hurt competition, raise prices for cell service, result in a loss of retail jobs and lower wages for the employees who remain. “The merger between T-Mobile and Sprint would severely undermine competition in the telecommunications sector, which would hurt Pennsylvanian consumers by driving up prices, limiting coverage, and diminishing quality,” Shapiro said in a statement.

Aside from Pennsylvania, the other states looking to block the merger include New York, California, Texas, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, Oregon, Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Sprint declined to comment, and T-Mobile did not immediately respond to Engadget’s request for comment.

Google added jobs to its search queries in 2017, rolling out from the US to the UK in 2018. It has certain features which make it appealing to users — not only is it very convenient, but it also lists salaries in its postings.

The problem is that smaller job listing companies say that Google’s practices are anticompetitive. The letter sent to the competition commissioner alleges that Google’s dominance in search gives it an unfair and possibly even illegal advantage over other job search companies, who have to spend large amounts of money on marketing. Google doesn’t have to spend a dime to market its job search, as it can leverage its position as the leader in search to funnel jobseekers to its listings.

The European Commission has stepped in to chastise Google for anticompetitive behaviors in the past. The company was fined nearly €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion) for “abusive” advertising practices, and has been forced to offer alternative browsers to Google Chrome on Android devices. In the case most similar to the current issue, Google was fined €2.4 billion ($2.7 billion) for promoting its own shopping service in search results, giving it an unfair advantage over rivals.

All of these cases were overseen by Margrethe Vestager, the competition commissioner. Vestager will be leaving her position on October 31st, but as reported by Reuters, there will be an extensive handover process so her successor will continue to investigate the issue.

If the commission does not respond to the letter sent by the other job search companies, the next step would be for the rivals to file a formal complaint against Google.
