The reasoning would be familiar. Like Amazon’s Prime Video Channels or the Apple TV app, this would turn YouTube into a central hub for your online viewing. It’d be convenient and give you one less reason to drift toward the competition, even if there’s little to no money headed YouTube’s way. Of course, this would also give YouTube a way to pitch Premium, TV and other in-house offerings to viewers who otherwise wouldn’t take a closer look.

Not that success is guaranteed. Facebook tried subscriptions to other services through Watch starting in summer 2019, but gave that up in November due to a lack of customer interest. These multi-service strategies only work if people are interested in both the destination and the services on offer. YouTube will have to show that it can serve as a one-stop shop for video services, not just as a place to go for funny cat clips and makeup tutorials.

Because Sony uses Android TV, this marks another instance of Apple blending its tech with the Android platform. The added feature is available through a firmware update, which is being rolled out to newer TVs. Sony hasn’t said which models will receive the update. But as 9to5Mac speculates, it will most likely be the models that are compatible with AirPlay 2 technology.

The Apple TV app will allow users to access Apple TV+, the company’s new streaming service, which launches on November 1st. In a push to bring Apple TV+ to more customers, the company will make the app available on Amazon Fire TV, LG and VIZIO platforms in the near future.

Through the app, users will have access to their iTunes libraries and all of the TV shows and movies they’ve already purchased or rented through Apple. Of course, the app will allow users to sign up for Apple TV+ even if they don’t own an Apple device.

For now, the app is only available on those two Fire TV Sticks, but Amazon says it will arrive on a few Fire TVs and the Fire TV Cube “soon.”

For $4.99 per month, they’ll have access to more than 100,000 movies and TV shows, including original programming like For All Mankind, The Morning Show, Dickinson and Oprah’s Book Club.

Apple hasn’t been shy about pushing its Apple TV+ streaming service. Last month, it announced that everyone who buys an iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or Mac will get a free one-year subscription to the service. By making the jump to Roku, it’s opening a door to potential subscribers who may not buy Apple products. That’s a smart move given the competition Apple TV+ faces from Netflix, Hulu and Disney+.

The latest version of the app includes the new Apple TV channels feature, which lets users subscribe directly to their favorite premium channels. The beta version offers support for Showtime, Starz, The Smithsonian Channel and Tastemade. The Apple TV app beta also offers new curation features, including the “For You” section that provides recommendations based on your watch history.

Absent for now is Apple TV+, Apple’s upcoming ad-free streaming service that will host the company’s original content. More information on its contents, price and release date will be revealed in the fall.
