Bandcamp has announced that this Friday, June 19, it will donate 100 percent of its share of sales to the NAACP legal defense fund — and that it will do so annually. In its announcement, the music publishing platform cited the killings of George Floyd, Tony McDade, Sean Reed, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and “ongoing state-sanctioned violence against Black people in the US” as the impetus for the move.

June 19th is also known as Juneteeth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. In addition to making donations every Juneteenth, Bandcamp said it’s allocating an additional $30,000 per year “to partner with organizations that fight for racial justice and create opportunities for people of color.” Further, Bandcamp announced Thursday that it received Björk’s complete studio discography, and proceeds from sales through Friday would be donated to Black Lives Matter UK.

You probably can’t go to the record store at the moment, but you can listen to 40 years’ worth of punk and hardcore music from Dischord Records, which has its entire discography available to stream for free on Bandcamp. The independent label was founded by Ian MacKye and Jeff Nelson of Minor Threat in 1980, and ever since has released influential records. If you hear something you like, you can pay for a download with higher audio quality — which could help artists more than if you were to listen on Spotify. MacKaye popularized the idea of $5 concerts and insisted on selling Dischord’s music at a low price, so this move is in line with the label’s DIY ethos.

Dischord has been a major provider of independent music, ranging from punk to emo — before the genre was associated with makeup and tight leather pants, it was an offshoot of hardcore. Many of punk and hardcore’s most prominent artists either had music published on the label or were directly influenced by its output. Aggressive music certainly isn’t for everyone, but if you’re curious, some stand-out albums include Rites of Spring’s self-titled record, 13 Songs by Fugazi, Shudder to Think’s Funeral at the Movies and No Kill No Beep Beep by Q and Not U. Hopefully new listeners will find something surprising, and longtime fans can go deeper down the Dischord rabbit hole.

Bandcamp is once again waiving its commission fees to help musicians impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The company won’t take a cut of any music or merchandise you buy between now and 12AM PT / 3AM ET. Several labels, such as Arts & Crafts and Ghostly, are waiving their fees as well.

When Bandcamp did this same thing on March 20th, fans spent approximately 15 times more than on the average Friday, leading to the best sales day in the platform’s history. In all, Bandcamp says that day it recorded $4.3 million in music and merch sales. That said, fans have been supportive throughout the pandemic. In the last 30 days, consumers have spent approximately $16.5 million buying music on Bandcamp.
