Schools and libraries have been closed for months, but some kids aren’t going to get away with playing video games all summer. Kelly Passek — a middle school librarian in Montgomery County, Virginia — is sending out summer reading via drones. After using the quadcopters from Wing to get some home essentials, she realized that she could use the service to literally drop some knowledge on local students.

Passek does have to resort to some manual labor to get books to kids, though. She takes requests via a Google Form, then packs up the books and drops them off at Wing’s facility. Wing’s drones can carry payloads of up to three pounds, so paperbacks shouldn’t be an issue, but hefty tomes may not be an option. Eligible students in the Montgomery County public school system can request over 150,000 books from the library, and the airborne delivery is free of charge.

The plaintiffs argue that the IA has no legal rights to distribute the books, which it scans and uploads to its servers, via Open Library or the National Emergency Library. The plaintiffs go as far as charging the Archive with piracy. The lawsuit seeks a declaration that the IA is committing copyright infringement, injunctions to stop the IA from sharing copyrighted work and statutory damages, which could be as much as $150,000 per infringement, TorrentFreak explains.

“As a library, the Internet Archive acquires books and lends them, as libraries have always done. This supports publishing and authors and readers. Publishers suing libraries for lending books, in this case, protected digitized versions, and while schools and libraries are closed, is not in anyone’s interest. We hope this can be resolved quickly,” IA founder Brewster Kahle said in a statement provided to Engadget.

A nonprofit, the IA clearly isn’t meant for piracy. In addition to creating the Open Library, it has attempted to archive everything Trump says on video in order to help fact checkers, fixed nine million broken Wikipedia links, saved Google+ posts and started a historical web collection to power services like the Wayback Machine. There’s no guarantee that this lawsuit will succeed, but if the IA is slapped with statutory damages it could be a fatal blow to the organization.

Update 06/01/2020 5:10PM ET: This story was updated to include a statement from Internet Archive.

Plenty of people listen to podcasts on their commute and during work, but iHeartMedia is hoping they can squeeze even more podcast consumption into their days — possibly before they nod off. The company partnered with Flatiron Books to create a series of titles based on popular podcasts. The first iHeart podcast to get a book adaptation will be the long-running Stuff You Should Know. Subtitled An Incomplete Compendium of Mostly Interesting Things, the book will be written by the show’s co-hosts, Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant, and will “answer all the questions readers didn’t know they wanted to ask” about everyday objects.

So far, 130,000 references have been linked to 50,000 digitized books that are hosted by the Archive. To see an example of the new digital referencing in action, you can head to the Wikipedia page for Martin Luther King, Jr. If you look at the reference for Adam Fairclough’s book To Redeem the Soul of America: The Southern Christian Leadership Conference & Martin Luther King Jr at the bottom of the page, you’ll see it’s a clickable link. Clicking takes you to the Internet Archive’s digital version of the book, open to the page from which the reference was taken.

When you open a digital book hosted by the Archive, you can see a few pages of preview to check the reference information. If you want to read more, you can borrow a digital copy of the book through the Controlled Digital Lending program.

The linking of references to digital books is done both by users and by robots, and has been performed in the English, Greek and Arabic versions of Wikipedia. The Internet Archive says it intends to continue working with Wikipedia communities to scan more books and link them to references. This isn’t the first time the two sites have worked together, as the group previously helped fix 9 million broken links on the encyclopedia using its Wayback Machine archive.

“Together we can achieve Universal Access to All Knowledge,” said Mark Graham, Director of the Wayback Machine project. “One linked book, paper, web page, news article, music file, video and image at a time.”

Spotify Untold, a book written by Jonas Leijonhufvud and Sven Carlsson, will be used as a source for the upcoming TV series by Yellow Bird UK, a studio owned by French media organization the Banijay Group. The book was released in March of 2019 but hasn’t had an English-language release yet; it details the history of the Swedish startup with first-hand accounts from over 70 interviews.

The book’s promotional materials and media coverage focus on Steve Jobs’ hostility toward Spotify’s employees, which will likely be a main focus of the TV series. Other aspects include the competition between Spotify and Beats Music (now Apple Music), the startup’s experiments in the hardware sector and the dynamics between media piracy and ad-supported streaming models. No release window has been revealed, but it was announced that authors Carlsson and Leijonhufvud will serve as consultants during production.

Don’t expect audiobook versions. Although Matt had considered them, his father didn’t like the thought of his books being adapted to other formats.

This is part of a broader attempt to explore J.D. Salinger’s life in the nine years since his death, including the first public exhibition of his personal archives (due this fall in the New York Public Library) and, eventually, the publication of the work that Salinger finished but never released.

It’s a watershed moment for digital books. Salinger has an almost mythological status (in part due to Catcher in the Rye‘s controversies), and now that legacy is more likely to carry on. There’s also simple economic reality at work. Much like The Beatles, the Salinger family was faced with either going where the customers are or risking the possibility that whole generations might forget (or at least, not pay for) their work.
