What’s the holdup, given that its competitor Steam has offered cloud saves since 2008? CEO Tim Sweeney noted that its a manual process for the Epic store team, requiring them to save each individual game. All Ubisoft titles have supported cloud saves since their launch due to Uplay integration.

The games with cloud save support, which Epic added over the last month or so, include: Alan Wake, Close to the Sun, Darksiders III, Enter the Gungeon, Genesis Alpha One, GNOG, Hyperlight Drifter, Kingdom New Lands, Limbo, Moonlighter, Mutant Year Zero, Overcooked, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter, The Sinking City, This War Of Mine and World War Z.

There’s another reason why Epic doesn’t just cloud save its entire library in one fell swoop. Epic has to work with developers of other released games to test cloud saves. It hopes to enable more games over time — and in the future, cloud saves will be enabled at launch.

Epic plans to expand cloud saves to many more games in the future, allowing players to seamlessly continue playing on a different PC and keep their save data somewhat more secure than if it were stored locally. Rival Steam has offered cloud saves since 2008.

However, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said the company has more work to do before it rolls out the feature more broadly, so it might be a while before it comes to more games. He noted the Epic Games Store team has to manually add cloud saves to titles, and that developers usually won’t have to update their games for the feature to work.

Cloud saves were included on the product roadmap Epic revealed for the store back in March. Among the other features Epic plans to add in the next several months are a user review system, wishlists, personal play time tracking and Humble Bundle integration.

Subscribers don’t get the full year free up front, however, so read the fine print. Those interested will need to head to Twitch’s website to claim 30 days free first, then come back after 60 days to claim another nine months of access.

So while it’s a year total free, anyone wanting to enjoy Switch Online features like cloud saves, classic games and online multiplayer without a break (don’t worry, it won’t delete your saves) will probably need to pay up for at least a short period. If you’ve already purchased your Switch online subscription, then the free months will just add on top of whatever you already have. Simple, right?
