Today, Facebook launched a new “Messenger Coronavirus Community Hub,” which so far basically just explains how people, communities and businesses can use Messenger to stay connected during the coronavirus pandemic. If you already use Messenger, this isn’t going to introduce any groundbreaking ideas or features. Instead, the hub will provide tips like how parents and educators, for example, can host virtual playdates or use voice and video calls to check in on students and colleagues.

The first big release of next month is the fourth season of lighthearted baking show Nailed It! Two days later, Coffee & Kareem, a new comedy starring Ed Helms (The Office, The Hangover) and Taraji P. Henson (Boston Legal, Baby Boy), starts streaming. Those who want to watch something thought-provoking should mark April 15th on their calendars; that’s when The Innocence Files, a new nine-episode documentary series about wrongful convictions in the US, premieres.

On April 20th, The Midnight Gospel (pictured above), the trippy new animated series from Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward, debuts. If you’re a fan of historical drama, you can look forward to starting season four of The Last Kingdom on April 26th.

Thankfully, there’s also new content to keep the kids happy. Specifically, we’re looking forward to The Big Show Show on April 6th, a comedy where WWE wrestler Big Show plays a fictionalized version of himself. The Willoughbys, a new animated film based on Lois Lowry’s 2008 children’s book of the same name, looks promising as well. It joins the service on the 22nd.

If Netflix’s upcoming slate of originals doesn’t do it for you, the good news is the company is adding a lot of notable third-party content this month. The obvious highlight is that you’ll be able to watch all six seasons of Community starting on April 1st — but there’s other stuff to look forward to as well. On the same day, all four Lethal Weapon movies join the service, as do Minority Report, Molly’s Game, Mortal Kombat, Mud and Taxi Driver. Over three days starting on April 5th, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Florida Project will begin streaming. On April 16th, your kids can watch Despicable Me yet again. Rounding out the month is The Artist, which starts streaming on the 25th.

Some of the better-known titles leaving the platform on March 31st include Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, as well as the final two Lord of the Rings movies. If you want to rewatch those films while they’re still available, now is the time to do so.

Earlier this month, YouTube declined to remove videos of right-wing commentator Steven Crowder, even though they contain homophobic and racist speech targeted at Vox host Carlos Maza. YouTube claimed the videos were “clearly hurtful” but didn’t violate any of its policies. Understandably, YouTube was criticized for its decision. In his email, Pichai said he especially regrets “that this happened during Pride month when we should be celebrating the incredible LGBTQ+ community you all have built at Google.”

Pichai said it’s important to him that the company continues “to work hard to ensure Google is a place where everyone feels included.” He said YouTube is taking a hard look at its harassment policies and will consult with many groups. “I am committed to taking action and working with you all to make our workplace more inclusive and to ensure our products work for everyone,” he wrote. Given all of the walkouts Google employees have conducted, we hope Pichai’s letter indicates and honest attempt to improve company culture and policies and that it’s not just an attempt to appease.

I want to thank the Gayglers Americas Steering Committee and Pride@YouTube for the good discussion yesterday.

It was important for me to hear directly from LGBTQ+ Googlers to better understand the full range of experiences. One thing that came through very clearly is the LGBTQ+ community has felt a lot of pain and frustration over recent events.

Yesterday, Susan apologized publicly for the pain some of these issues have caused. I share that feeling and especially regret that this happened during Pride month when we should be celebrating the incredible LGBTQ+ community you all have built at Google.

Our Gaygler and Trans communities have always been a core part of Google culture. You are a source of pride for us as Googlers, and also a source of hope for people globally who don’t feel comfortable being out in their own workplaces and communities. It’s important to me that we continue to work hard to ensure Google is a place where everyone feels included.

With respect to YouTube, Susan and the team are already taking a hard look at the harassment policies and will do this in consultation with many groups, including people who have themselves experienced harassment. We’re also thinking through ways to engage more with our LGBTQ+ community at important moments and get input from our ERG leads and representatives.

Our discussion yesterday was a great starting point. It was a tough conversation at times — and I really appreciate the honestly and rigor you brought to it. Thank you again for your candor, your ideas, and your commitment. Look forward to continuing the conversation. At the moment, Change A View is more of an extension of the subreddit than anything. It shows how even Reddit’s relatively flexible community format has its limits. However, Turnbull told Wired that he saw it becoming a platform for other conversations online, possibly replacing the sometimes toxic comment systems you see online. That, in turn, could lead to more nuanced and respectful discussions instead of the flame wars that are all too common today.
