Spotify still had a solid lead at the end of 2019 with 35 percent of subscriptions. However, its rivals are growing fast. Apple Music’s listener base grew 36 percent to give it 19 percent of streaming, while Amazon’s share grew by half to hit 15 percent. This put them comfortably ahead of rivals like Tencent (11 percent) and YouTube Music (6 percent). The remaining 14 percent of tended to be split between regional giants like India’s Gaana and Russia’s Yandex Music.

It’s not certain how much more headroom there might be. Counterpoint predicted that streaming music would grow another 25 percent in 2020, but it also warned that the COVID-19 pandemic might hurt. Habits are unsurprisingly skewing more toward radio and TV news, and that leaves fewer people willing to subscribe to services meant chiefly for entertainment.

Just where these phones dominated is another matter. It won’t surprise you to hear that Apple ruled North America, taking all of the top five slots, and took two of the top spots in Europe. In most other places, though, it’s a Samsung planet. Samsung had the most top-five phones in Europe, Latin America, MEA (Middle East and Africa) and most of the Asia-Pacific area. The only place where Apple and Samsung failed to place was, unsurprisingly, China. Oppo, Vivo and Huawei led the pack in their home country.

While this does line up with market share estimates, it doesn’t completely reflect the market. Companies like Huawei and BBK (which owns Oppo, Vivo, Realme and OnePlus) often fare well, but their phone sales tend to be distributed across many models rather than a handful of favorites. Still, this showed the lack of variety in the market, and Counterpoint warned that there appeared to be “consolidation” where fewer and fewer phone makers enjoyed success. That’s a problem if you’re eager for phone choices, especially if you live in a place where one brand reigns supreme.

Not surprisingly, many of those Samsung users (31 percent of all Pixel 3 buyers) were coming from the Galaxy S7, a device roughly two years old. Counterpoint also found that 14 percent of Pixel 3 buyers were coming from Motorola handsets, while 15 percent of OnePlus’ shoppers previously used LG devices.

These aren’t completely shocking figures. Both handsets are potentially better value for money than Samsung’s phones, and in some ways are considered polar opposites — they aren’t saddled with as much software bloat, and typically enjoy timelier OS updates. Still, Counterpoint believes this could be a “disappointment,” particularly to Google. The company has long positioned the Pixel line as an iPhone alternative, but 82 percent of its customers are already using Android. It’s not so much expanding Android’s reach as it is poaching sales from its own partners.
