Adobe has updated its Fresco drawing app with a bunch more features. There’s a clipping masks tool that will allow you to capture certain parts of your drawing and move them to another layer or layer group. That way, you can continue to work on your piece without worrying about messing up the work you’ve already done.

There’s a new brush management tool as well. You’ll be able to pick which Pixel brushes to display or hide and make a custom set of brushes with the ones you use the most often. Fresco now has a preview tool for Photoshop, Pixel and Eraser brushes, which shows you the size and shape of the brush when you touch the screen. You can activate that though the Brushes menu, which is under the Input options in App Settings.

As it does with games, RTX GPUs will also allow Adobe Dimension users to speed up rendering of 3D environments (an example is shown above) that use dynamic lighting, reflections and soft shadows. “We’re also adding interactive ray tracing that will enable artists to render fantastic 3D photorealistic scenes that take their environments to the next level,” said ADobe’s 3D and AR director of engineering, Ross McKegney.

The RTX tricks will also speed up the latest version of Adobe’s Substance Alchemist, a tool that helps artists create realistic textures for 3D objects. That app will take advantage of AI deep learning built into RTX GPUs, NVIDIA notes. “Material creation that used to take an artist hours of painstaking masking and editing to remove lighting can now be done by AI in seconds,” according to Adobe.

Finally, NVIDIA unveiled its latest Studio Driver, promising to boost performance in compatible Creative Cloud apps like Adobe Premiere and After Effects. It’ll also boost other apps like Autodesk Arnold, Cinebench and Redcine-X Pro. The new driver and features for Adobe’s apps are now available.

In the video example below, it shows how you can remove flagpoles, tourists and other unwanted objects from a castle scene in order to use it in a period movie. You simply cut out the objects you don’t want, hit “generate fill layer,” and it will analyze the content and motion in the scene to best figure out how to fill in the blanks. You can also paint in reference frames to manually guide the process.

Adobe also fixed a sore point with Premiere Pro CC by improving hardware acceleration for motion-based HEVC and H.265 p-frame codecs. That should make editing in those native formats less sluggish, while also speeding exports to YouTube and other platforms. It also introduced dual GPU optimization, speeding work if you have a PC with multiple graphics cards.

Finally on Premiere Pro, Adobe introduced the Freeform Project panel to let you organize and storyboard your video, along with Auto Ducking that automatically lowers music and other ambient sound during dialogue scenes. If you have a Creative Cloud subscription, you should be able to download the new features now.
