The new Fire TV Cube is also on offer with a decent discount: $100 instead of $120. Again, not the cheapest we’ve seen it (it dropped to $90 just before the holidays), but a great price for all the new features it packs in, such as support for Dolby Vision and HDR+, YouTube and YouTube TV. If you’ve been on the fence about the Fire TV Recast, maybe Amazon’s latest discount will swing you — it’s on sale now for $145. That’s a pretty significant $85 saving on the usual $230 list price. The compact box offers both DVR and streaming features, giving cord cutters an option to watch and record network TV content and sports broadcasts as well as streaming services like Netflix or Hulu. There’s also Alexa integration and you can use the device with your mobile device (iOS and Android) as well as Fire TV, Echo Show or Fire Tablet. Again, this isn’t the cheapest we’ve seen it, but it is a hefty discount that’s not going to come around too often.

Dolby Atmos Music is mixed so that instruments or vocal tracks (called objects) sound like they’re appearing in different parts of a room. For instance, you might hear the vocals coming from the front, while the other instruments are coming from all around you. That means “listeners can discover hidden details and subtleties with unparalleled clarity,” according to Dolby. The encoding works regardless of how many speakers you have.

If you’re a Tidal HiFi subscriber, the app will default to the Dolby Atmos experience if its available on a track. “Tracks will be identified by a ‘Dolby logo’ visual badge as well as through a ‘Dolby Atmos’ identifier that will display once a song is selected,” according to the press release. You can also scroll through a list of Dolby Atmos tracks under the Explore tab. Tidal said that it’s also “working closely with its artist-owners, including Jay-Z, to mix their catalogs in Dolby Atmos — which are expected to become available in 2020.”

At launch, DTS Sound Unbound supports 11 games, including Gears 5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Metro: Exodus. At first glance, that’s not a lot of games out of the gate, but it turns out Dolby Access — Dolby’s take on the same concept — only supports 12 titles itself. In fact, both apps support more or less the same handful of games. Unlike Dolby Access, DTS Sound Unbound isn’t available on the Xbox One yet, though support is on the way.

You can try out DTS Sound Unbound for two weeks for free, though you’ll need to make a one-time in-app purchase to continue using the tech with your headphones. The $19.99 package includes both DTS Headphone:X and DTS:X. The latter works with movies and TV shows. Alternatively, you can purchase DTS:X by itself for $9.99. By comparison, it costs $14.99 to buy the Dolby Atmos app for headphones.

It’s not a surprise to see DTS go after gamers. Like audiophiles, most gamers are willing to spend a bit extra to get more out of their setups. The company has likely also felt a pinch from Dolby, which has been aggressive about adding Atmos to almost anything that can support the format.

THX will debut its premium large format brand called THX Ultimate Cinema this spring or summer, it announced. It features a dual-laser 4K Barco projectors and a THX-certified 7.1 immersive sound system and will take on the likes of IMAX and Dolby in the premium large format (PLF) category. It will debut at the at the 1,400 seat Regency Westwood Village Theatre in LA, which has hosted numerous red-carpet premieres.
