Electric scooter company Lime is buying the designs, software, parts and test equipment of Boosted, according to The Verge. While neither Lime nor the electric skateboard company has made an announcement, some Reddit posts and patent files seemingly have confirmed the news. Additionally, two former Boosted employees have also told The Verge that Lime has been working on buying Boosted’s IP since late last year. It’s unclear whether Lime is interested in continuing to manufacture electric skateboards or if the company simply wants to leverage the insights and engineering behind Boosted’s technology.

Originally, Boosted had planned to be acquired by Yamaha, but the deal fell through. Sanjay Dastoor, Boosted co-founder and ex-CEO, said in a Reddit post that ““Lime has purchased all the assets and IP of the company. As far as I can tell, this includes design files, software and code, diagnostics, parts and test equipment.” According to Dastoor, “Lime also appears to be in possession of everything at Boosted’s headquarters in Mountain View, including access to the building.”

In 2012, Boosted came onto the scene with its crowdfunded Loaded Vanguard light electric skateboard and has since produced a string of personal vehicles including last year’s Rev scooter. Unfortunately things may be nearing the end, as the company announced “the incredibly difficult decision to let a significant portion of the Boosted team go.” It cited the “unplanned challenge “of the US-China tariff war as a factor in its struggle, despite the many riders putting in millions of miles of riding on its products.

Since its launch, the “micromobility” field has become increasingly crowded, and there doesn’t seem to be a sure winner at this point, but as its CTO and CEO noted in the post, the need to keep capital flowing to maintain production and maintenance of vehicles is tricky. Now the plan is to “pursue strategic options under new ownership,” so we’ll have to wait and see what that looks like in the future.

This isn’t Riptide’s best board in every respect. The top speed peaks at 18MPH rather than the 22MPH of the R1X, and the 7-mile range could limit this to shorter commutes and around-town jaunts.

However, the pricing might hit the sweet spot. The R1 Black is up for pre-order now at a price of $749 ($649 if you buy before April 8th), or right between the base R1 and the R1X. You also won’t need to ditch your existing board if you want a similar feel. Riptide is selling a $125 Surf Adapter kit that can introduce that surfboard-like ride to any existing model. You only really need the Black if you’re starting fresh and don’t need the power of the R1X under your feet.

Most notably, a Simplestop dismount feature streamlines the riding experience so that you won’t fly off while you’re still learning the ropes. It’s smaller (27 inches long) and lighter than past models, helping both its agility and portability. Future Motion drives that last point home by including a fold-out magnetic handle on the side — you’re clearly meant to carry this around for those moments you need

The catch? Not surprisingly, the Pint isn’t a long-range cruiser. You’re looking at 6 to 8 miles of range and a 16MPH top speed. The company pitches this as a board for coffee shop trips and the last leg of a commute, rather than something you’d ride all the way to work and back. While that seems appropriate, it does put the Pint at a disadvantage to the Boosted Mini X, which costs slightly more but roughly doubles the range.

You won’t have to wait too long to get the new Onewheel, at least. Future Motion has started pre-orders ahead of a May release, and those who buy in the first 48 hours (no later than March 13th) can snag bonus fenders, custom etched rails and other perks at no extra cost. The Pint still isn’t a trivial purchase by any stretch. It might, however, be the model that helps the Onewheel line expand beyond a niche audience.
