You’ll have more Facebook Live options starting today too, as you can broadcast to Pages and Groups using a Portal Mini, Portal or Portal+, while there are more AR effects you can tap into on calls and for virtual greetings cards. Facebook is adding two more books to the Story Time app this month, with more on the way later in the summer.

The company is also expanding Portal voice control functions over the next few weeks as well. For instance, you’ll be able to start WhatsApp calls using your voice and there’ll be support for British English commands.

You can now listen to just the audio of live videos on Facebook, which is a handy data-saving option Twitch has long offered, and some pages can even offer a toll-free number you can call to listen to streams. Most public live videos are available on the web too, so you won’t necessarily need a Facebook account to watch.

As for game streaming, the company released the Facebook Gaming app this week, through which you can stream games from Android devices. You can now set up tournaments, and the feature’s coming to the mobile app soon too. Facebook’s also expanding the availability of Stars to more countries and pages. They’re Facebook’s answer to Twitch Bits — you can buy and donate them to streamers, who receive a cent for each one.

Facebook is also expanding live streaming on Portal. With the Facebook Live app, you can already run broadcasts on your profile, but you’ll soon be able to stream to pages and groups as well. That might make streaming a more viable option for some because the system’s smart camera can automatically follow you as you move around.

As for Instagram, it enabled live streams on the web earlier this month, so you can watch without comments covering a chunk of the screen. Until now, the only way you’ve been able to let people watch your streams after the fact is by saving them to your story, but they’re only visible for 24 hours. That’s about to change, as soon you’ll be able to save live videos to IGTV so people can find them later.

Facebook is also adding new options that will allow livestreamers to reach those without a smartphone or access to reliable mobile data. Called “Public Switch Telephone Network,” it will allow people to listen in on a livestream via a toll free number, similar to calling into a conference call. Similarly, Facebook Live is getting a new “audio only” mode so viewers can listen in without watching the accompanying video.

The new features could also help Facebook deal with the “unprecedented” surge in demand for its services in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The company said it’s struggling to keep up with traffic, as more and more users turn to its messaging apps to stay in touch with loved ones.

Both video calling and live streaming are resource intensive for the company, which has already been forced to downgrade video quality in Europe. So if more users take advantage of features like audio only or calling into livestreams instead, it could also help Facebook conserve resources.

The policy applies not just to violations on Facebook Live streaming alone. Users could also be banned from live streaming if they share links to statements from terrorist groups without any context, for instance. Rosen said that Facebook plans to expand the restrictions to other parts of the platform and soon, users who violate its standards will no longer be able to create ads.

In March, a white nationalist terrorist live-streamed a horrific attack on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Facebook was roundly criticized for not removing the stream quickly enough and leaving copies online for a lengthy period following the attack. After revealing that Facebook found more than 900 videos showing portions of the attack, COO Cheryl Sandberg admitted that the company needed to do more.

Facebook also promised to do more to find harmful videos and remove them more quickly. As such, it pledged $7.5 million toward research with universities like Cornell and USC Berkeley on “image and video analysis technology.” Still, the measures likely won’t go far enough to please many critics, who think Facebook should take more drastic measures like delaying Live streams.
