Speaking of news — EA hasn’t outlined exactly what we’ll see during today’s show, but there are a few confirmed appearances. Star Wars: Squadrons is the latest game out of EA Motive, and it’s heading to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on October 2nd, complete with cross-platform play and VR support. EA only revealed the game this week, teasing first-person X-wing battles with a cinematic trailer. Today would be a good opportunity to show off some actual Squadrons gameplay.

There’s also the new title from Hazelight, the studio that built A Way Out and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. Hazelight founder Josef Fares said there will be “a short tease” about the studio’s new game during EA Play Live. Fares has a reputation for saying whatever the hell he wants during live events, so maybe don’t run for a drink refill during his segment.

Of course, there will likely be plenty of Madden 21 and FIFA 21 talk, extra indie goodies from the EA Originals line, and potentially some DLC news for Battlefield 5 or The Sims 4. Maybe, maybe we’ll even hear something about Dragon Age, Titanfall, Skate, Mass Effect, Apex Legends, Need for Speed, Dead Space or Plants vs. Zombies. EA owns a deep library of iconic franchises, and with a new console generation on the horizon, everything is on the table.

With both traditional and esports adjusting their schedules due to COVID-19, England’s Premier League announced a new, hybrid tournament, the ePremiere League Invitational, in which football stars and celebrity fans will test their esports abilities in a five-day, 20-team, single-elimination tournament. The winner will take home the ePremier League Invitational champion title, and all proceeds will go to the #PlayersTogether fund, supporting the National Health Service.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold will face off with musician and lifelong Manchester United fan Tom Grennan, who will represent the Red Devils. The league’s “trickiest wingers” Raheem Sterling and Wilfried Zaha will go head-to-head, and Tottenham Hotspur’s midfielder Moussa Sissoko has been matched with Christian Atsu, playing for Hotspur’s old club, Newcastle United.

The coronavirus doesn’t care how famous you are or how much money you make, it’s an equal opportunity infector. That’s why some of the richest and most famous footballers on the planet have joined forces for your entertainment. They’re participating in EA’s FIFA 20 charity gaming tournament, the “Stay and Play Cup” which aims to raise a million dollars to help the COVID-19 recovery effort. Now let’s see if their thumbs are as nimble as their feet.

With ISPs across the country already feeling the strain of an entire nation Netflix-and-chilling, Google has plans to stress networks even further through the magic of game streaming. The company announced last week that both new and existing Stadia subscribers will receive a two months of free service, even if you haven’t bought Google’s hardware bundle.

If you (quite rightly) don’t trust Zoom for your video conferencing needs, Google has stepped up and is offering its Meet service — you used to know it as hangouts — for free until the end of the summer. Now your video call with Nana won’t be interrupted by porn vids… unless that’s what you’re into.

Following HBO’s lead from last week, Apple has announced that it will lower the paywall around a number of its original shows including Little America, Servant, For All Mankind, Ghostwriter, and The Elephant Queen. There’s no word on how long they’ll be free so get to binge watching. Not like you have anywhere to go.

One company that noticeably has not made a portion of its library available without charge is Disney+. It’s not like Disney is hurting for income. Sure, ESPN+ has cratered what with the lack of sports and all, but the streaming service now boasts 50 million subscribers less than half a year after launch. And you’re telling me that they can’t at least hook us up with some Brave Little Toaster in our time of need? Then again, Disney holds more sway than the UN at this point so I guess it can generally do what it wants.

Not even NASCAR is taking chances with the health of its athletes and fans. The racing league announced last week that it will replace its marathon-length live events with 90-minute competitions with its marquee racers competing in “simulation-style” esports contests. This is the Rugby 7s of motorsports and we’re here for it.

The FIFA 2020 season, like the rest of sports, has been canceled. But that hasn’t stopped football fans from watching their heroes compete on a virtual pitch. More than 60,000 people tuned in to switch last week to watch Borja Iglesias for Real Betis and Sergio Reguilon for Sevilla compete head to head in lieu of their canceled derby.

Only one of America’s top five late-night talk show hosts has the courage, conviction, and wherewithal to keep filming their series in the plague era. And that host is Conan O’Brien who will be coming to America’s living rooms via his living room (and a Skype connection) in the coming weeks.

Given our newfound reliance on take-out and delivery orders, it would have been easy for DoorDash to continue enforcing its predatory 30 percent per order commissions. But the situation is so dire these days that the company has announced that it will forego up to $100 million in revenue over the next 30 days in order to give local restaurants a financial break. Such largesse.

I can’t think of a more clear-cut sign as to the seriousness of the coronavius outbreak than the fact that Apple unveiled its brand new $1000 MacBook Air model boasting a 12-hour battery life and i3 (upgradeable to i7) Intel chipsets last week and barely anybody even noticed.

To match the update, EA is launching an eLibertadores esports tourney as part of FIFA 20‘s Global Series. Most details won’t be available until December, but it’ll culminate in a Grand Final on March 7th and 8th that will have the top eight PS4 and Xbox One players fight to win money from a $100,000 prize pool.

The expansion will make FIFA 20 more representative of soccer (aka football) beyond Europe. It could also give EA a competitive edge. FIFA 20 already has license advantages over its rival PES 2020 — it may be that much harder to justify Konami’s title if you’re a fan of South American teams.

As you might expect, your Volta avatar isn’t that good right after you create them, but you can help them get better by trying different skill challenges and playing different tournaments. Not only do you gain skill attributes by playing well and winning street matches, but you also get Volta points you can spend on clothes, accessories and shoes to make your player look more swaggy. Mine started out at level 65 (out of 100) and now I’m above 70, plus he’s now wearing cool camo joggers and Adidas gear, which I was able to to buy after hours of playing.

Volta World and League, for their part, are an extension of Volta Story. League is where you can play Volta Football against friends and other people online, while World lets you explore the different street venues in the game and play matches there — though you’ll need to have unlocked the pitches in story mode before you can do play in some. Each location in this virtual tour has unique court with different match types, so you can play 3v3 (no goalkeepers), 4v4, 5v5 or even professional futsal (indoors) depending on which city you choose. It’s great because playing in NYC, Mexico City, London or any of the other cities in Volta feels different.

I’ll definitely miss The Journey, as I think it was one of the best features to come to the FIFA franchise in years, but Volta Football makes FIFA 20 feel fresh — and I’m perfectly content with that.

Although Volta Football is obviously the biggest addition to the latest edition of FIFA, EA Sports also made significant changes to Career Mode, which were long overdue. For starters, you’ll have a chance to create and choose female characters as your manager, a first for the game. Unlike previous years, when you could only pick your manager from a group of standard, dull characters, in FIFA 20 you can customize their body type, skin tone, clothing and hairstyle. Additionally, EA took a cue from Football Manager and will now let your manager attend pre- and post-match press conferences, where your answers to questions from reporters will affect your team’s and individual players’ morale.

The changes extend to the classic gameplay, where EA has tried to make the game more realistic with tweaks that mimic real-world players and matches. With Composed Finishing and Controlled Tackling, for instance, shooting and defending is so much better that it won’t take long for FIFA fans to notice. Composed Finishing makes scoring harder, especially in situations like volleys, and Controlled Tackling makes it so that when you play as a defender you have to time your tackles just right if you want to keep control of the ball.

EA says it wanted these new animations to make FIFA 20 feel like “true-to-life” experience, and it shows throughout the entire game.

Specifically, the list of supported Roku gear includes Roku Premiere, Roku Premiere+, Roku Streaming Stick+, Roku Ultra and 4K TV models that run the Roku OS. And, of course, the Apple TV 4K. Fox says it plans to add support for more streaming devices in the future, but it isn’t talking specific dates right now. In addition to 4K visuals, the network will offer 5.1 audio inside its streaming apps for the first time as well. You should be able to get a better feel for what it’s like to be inside the stadium — or at least the best you can from your couch.

Only the games will be 4K. Additional Women’s World Cup coverage like studio shows will stream in HD through the apps. What’s more, Fox says some distributors, like Fubo and DirecTV, will also offer 4K content throughout the tournament on its networks.

EA Play will feature behind-the-scenes looks and developer talks, but the focus is expected to be on gameplay. Earlier this year, EA announced it would skip its usual press conference at E3. Instead, it would throw on a more fan-centric EA Play on the weekend before the main E3 event, where the emphasis would be “less talk and more play”.

If you weren’t lucky enough to score tickets to the event at Hollywood Palladium, you’ll have to watch from home. Simply tune-in to EA.com or EA’s channels on YouTube or Twitch.
