Once they begin the movie, they’ll have 72 hours to finish it. Users can lend up to three films per month — though, beyond that, you can share the same title as many times as you want.

At the moment, approximately 6,500 movies are Screen Pass-eligible, accounting for more than 80 percent of the platform’s library. To use the feature, you need to have redeemed a non-promotional digital code within the last six months.

Notably, Warner Bros. told Variety it doesn’t have a plan to release Tenet in China yet. Behind North America, the country is the second-largest movie market globally. When theaters in China first started reopening, the country’s Film Administration (CFA) said they couldn’t show movies longer than two hours. However, according to Variety, some cinemas recently started playing older films like Inception that are longer than two hours, so that policy may no longer apply.

If Warner Bros. goes through with the release of Tenet, it will be the first major movie to hit theaters since the coronavirus pandemic shut down most cinemas in March. With the pandemic still a major issue in the US, a lot could change between now and September, making even a limited release untenable. Whatever happens, don’t expect you’ll be able to watch the movie online anytime soon. Unless something drastically changes, Nolan’s latest won’t skip theaters for a video on demand or streaming premiere.

Warner Bros. and Nolan still harbor hopes of bringing it to theaters this year, however. “We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature,” the studio’s chairman Toby Emmerich told Variety in a statement. “We are not treating Tenet like a traditional global day-and-date release, and our upcoming marketing and distribution plans will reflect that.”

Warner Bros. will be flexible with its rollout plans, Variety reported, ultimately meaning that people in other countries could see the movie before the studio releases it domestically. There may even be staggered release dates within the US, starting in select cities where officials have deemed it enough safe to allow theaters to reopen. In any case, we’ll find out more about the release plans soon enough.

If you’d like to take part, there are some requirements you’ll have to meet, such as obtaining permission from everyone you capture and making sure there’s no music in your footage. Only a fraction of the submissions will be included in the film, but there are a few ways you can boost your chances of making it in. For instance, the filmmakers suggest you film in landscape mode at as high a resolution as possible and use an external microphone if you can. You’ll have until August 2nd to submit your footage.

Life in a Day 2020 has the potential to be even more compelling than its predecessor, given this is one of the most remarkable years in living memory. It could serve as a living, breathing time capsule of the current state of the world. However, the filmmakers ultimately want participants to make their footage personal and about what matters to them.

Last time around, people in 189 countries submitted more than 80,000 clips totaling around 4,500 hours of footage. Macdonald and his team whittled that down to a memorable 95-minute documentary. If you haven’t seen it, or you’re looking for a little more inspiration on what to capture later this month, you can watch the original Life in a Day right here:

David Fincher’s movie The Social Network committed the origins of Facebook to film. A major part of that drama brought to light how Mark Zuckerberg allegedly stole an idea from the Winklevoss twins to create Facebook. According to Deadline, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss have partnered with Stampede Ventures to create a film about their own adventures in cryptocurrency. An adaptation of Ben Mezrich’s Bitcoin Billionaires, the film will detail how the twins invested in Bitcoin payment processor BitInstant, and eventually became the first people to make $1 billion from the cryptocurrency.

Stampede Ventures is headed by former Warner Bros. production chief Greg Silverman. The company has yet to release a movie. It had planned to release its first film, Pink Skies Ahead this spring, but the premiere was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Stampede has officially announced 22 other movies thus far.

The next movie from the world renowned Studio Ghibli will be a departure from its previous efforts. The studio co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki is well-known for its expertise in traditional, hand-drawn animation, and only occasionally uses CGI in its films. The upcoming Aya and the Witch, however, will be animated entirely in 3D. It will premiere on Japanese television, rather than in theaters, when it’s released this winter.

Save for the digitally created (albeit 2D) movie, My Neighbors the Yamadas, CGI has only accounted for about 10 percent of the runtime in previous Ghibli films. The studio usually only uses computer animation as a fallback for scenes that would be particularly difficult or labor intensive to achieve through hand-drawn methods. (All Ghibli films before 1997’s Princess Mononoke are completely animated by hand.) However, after temporarily retiring in 2013, Miyazaki developed an interest in 3D CGI. While the studio’s co-founder isn’t directing this film — his son, Goro, is taking the helm — he is credited as a planner, so his dabbling may have played a part in the decision to forego cel animation. Studio Ghibli has also voiced concerns about its return on investments — traditional animation is slow and costly compared to 3D CGI, so this change could also be a cost-saving measure.

Earlier this year, Disney won the bidding war for the filmed version of megahit musical Hamilton, which was shot in 2016 and features the original cast. Disney was going to bring the film to movie theaters in October 2021, but it’s bringing forward the release date by more than a year and skipping cinemas entirely — Hamilton will drop on Disney+ like a hot mixtape on July 3rd.

Given that’s the eve of Independence Day and protagonist Alexander Hamilton helped frame the US Constitution, that’s pretty nifty timing. Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and the Hamilton team gave Disney the green light to release the movie much earlier than originally planned, albeit as a streaming exclusive.

However, Screen Pass doesn’t work with all movies on the platform as things stand. More than 6,000 titles (about 80 percent) will be shareable during the beta. But, according to The Verge, that doesn’t seem to include Disney, Marvel or Star Wars films despite Disney running the service. To share a movie, you’ll also need to have purchased a compatible copy or have redeemed a DVD or Blu-ray code for a digital version of a film within the last six months.

There’s no messaging option in Movies Anywhere either. You’ll have to chat with your friends elsewhere to decide what movies you’re going to lend or borrow. And, of course, you’ll need to have an invite to the beta. Those hurdles aside, it seems like a neat way to share movies with your friends. You might even start a film at the same time while FaceTiming so you can watch together despite social distancing measures being in place.
