Ford has unveiled a new app feature for its upcoming Mustang Mach-E that will save you the hassle of setting up navigation, climate control, charging stations and other personal settings once it’s delivered. “Remote Vehicle Setup,” will instead let you pre-configure vehicle settings from home and save them in the cloud, then apply them once the car arrives.

According to a video supplied by Ford, you first enter the FordPass app and create a profile with your address. From there, it finds charging stations nearby and lets you select them from a map, or you can program one manually if it doesn’t appear. Then you can set times and days that you usually depart, program your ideal cabin temperature (cool, medium or warm) and select the type of drive performance (“engage,” “unbridled” or “whisper”).

The companies are promising discounts of up to 40 percent, although that will likely vary. The insurance is available now in 39 states with notable exceptions like New York and Washington, although it should reach other states “over time.”

This is more convenient than other forms of usage-based insurance. You don’t need to buy a separate dongle, and you can sign up through the Ford or Lincoln apps with some of the details already filled in. The problem, as is often the case, is that you’re trading a degree of privacy for the bargain. While there aren’t indications that Ford or Nationwide will misuse tracking data, the truth remains that you’re sharing your driving patterns with third parties.

This unsurprisingly doesn’t include the WiFi hotspot service, since that requires an LTE connection (AT&T in the US). All the same, Ford is eager to rub this in the nose of competitors. GM’s OnStar can cost up to $15 per month, and your trial only lasts three months. Toyota charges $8 per month with a similar trial period. While free FordPass service isn’t a huge savings in the context of the car, it could add up if you intend to keep a car for several years or more.

A move like this is likely easy to justify. What Ford loses in subscription revenue it might gain by spurring more customers to buy higher trim levels with FordPass Connect. There’s also the simple matter of matching drivers’ evolving expectations. When it’s increasingly common to manage your car through a phone app, charging extra for the functionality may seem arbitrary.
