Despite all that tech, it offers pretty mediocre shooting speeds of 4.5 fps with full autofocus and AE. That’s just a touch less than Canon’s 5 fps EOS RP, but far less what you’ll find on comparably-priced APS-C cameras like Sony’s 11 fps A6600.

Nikon

As mentioned, video isn’t a strong point with the Z5. It can shoot video at 4K 30 fps, but much like with Canon’s EOS R and EOS RP, you’re stuck with a 1.7X crop. You can shoot 1080p using the full sensor width (probably with line-skipping), but at a maximum of just 60 fps.

Happily, the Z5 has a full five-axis in-body stabilization system (or vibration reduction, as Nikon calls it), just like the Z6 and Z7. And unlike those models, it has dual UHS II card slots in place of the Z6/Z7’s single, XQD slot. That’ll be good news for photographers who need a backup and don’t want to spend more for XQD cards.

Other features include a 3.69 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder, tilting but not fully articulating touchscreen and 390 shots per charge from the new EN-EL15C battery. The Z5 uses polycarbonate on the back and bottom rather than magnesium alloy like the Z6, but it’s still sealed against dust and moisture.

Nikon

The Z5 arrives in August and costs $1,400 for the body only, or $1,700 with the new 24-50mm f/4-6.3 lens (pictured above). Nikon also unveiled new 1.4x and 2.0X teleconverters ($550 and $600 respectively) and said it would launch a Windows 10 webcam utility for many of its DSLRs and Z mount cameras next month.

Now that Hulu is part of Disney’s streaming triumvirate with ESPN+ and Disney+, there’s a reorganization at the top and Randy Freer will step down from his role as CEO. He took over in late 2017, but now it will join the others under direct oversight from Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International chairman Kevin Mayer. We’ll see what changes come in the future for Hulu, as it previously stood alone as a rival to Netflix, but now is a part of a larger strategy.

Disney CEO Bob Iger already announced plans for “FX on Hulu” programming that’s overseen by FX boss John Landgraf, which came after Disney pulled the plug on a standalone FX streaming service. The Hollywood Reporter point out that Hulu’s scripted original shows are overseen by Disney TV Studios chairman Dana Walden, while Deadline reports it’s expected to hire a business leader to oversee the division.

Right now, you’re limited to cropped widescreen versions of older episodes. If you want to watch them in their full 4:3 glory, you’ll have to wait until early 2020 — you can’t go back to Simpsons World to view them as intended. Although this isn’t necessarily going to break your heart (especially if you still have Simpsons discs), it does illustrate the dangers of quick transitions and streaming exclusives.

“FX is a producer of high quality content and will become a key content driver for Hulu,” Iger continued. “The Hulu and FX teams have been collaborating to develop an exciting strategy to bring the full breadth of FX’s content and production capabilities to Hulu subscribers.”

The result of that collaboration is dubbed “FX on Hulu” and will include all seasons of more than 40 FX series, with new episodes hitting the streaming service the day after they air on television. FX will also produce a number of original series exclusively for the partnership, starting with four new titles in 2020: the 8-episode miniseries Devs from Alex Garland, Misses America starring Cate Blanchett, The Teacher starring Kate Mara, The Old Man starring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow.

The move comes as Hulu adopts a more aggressive stance with regard to original programming as it seeks to better compete with Netflix, Amazon, and to a lesser degree, Disney+.
