Many theater chains are set to open in mid-July, just after the movie debuts on Apple+. However, most cinemas will start with far less than maximum capacity and it’s likely that many movie fans will avoid the enclosed spaces until the COVID-19 epidemic is well behind us.

In any case, Hanks and Greyhound could do a lot worse than Apple+. With 4K data bitrates reportedly in the 29-41 Mb/s range, according to FlatPanelsHD founder Rasmus Larsen, the service offers much higher data speeds than Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. That’s not the only way to judge 4K streaming quality, but higher bitrates are generally better, with all else being equal.

Still, Hanks does have a point. Blu-ray movies play with over twice that amount of data (100 Mbps) while the DCP format used in cinemas runs at up to 250 Mbps — about six times the maximum speeds measured on Apple TV+. Hanks knows better than most of us, however, that the coronavirus is nothing to mess with — especially over the quality of a film.

Greyhound went through a tumultuous period ahead of its release. Sony Pictures planned to release it in theaters, but that idea was stymied by the COVID-19 pandemic that shut cinema chains worldwide. Instead, Sony auctioned the rights and Apple TV+ was the surprise winner. By acquiring Greyhound, Apple showed it was willing to spend big to compete with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and other streaming majors.

Apple TV+ also partnered with Hanks (and Steven Spielberg) on the WW II series Masters of the Air. Other projects coming to the $4.99 per month service soon include Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones, the Spike Jonze doc Beastie Boys Story and Defending Jacob with Chris Evans.

Tom Hanks is joining the ranks of stars premiering movies on streaming services during the pandemic, but he’s not going to one of the usual outlets. Deadline reports that Hanks is premiering his WWII naval drama Greyhound on Apple TV+, making it Apple’s largest movie project to date. The tech firm hasn’t announced a release date, although Greyhound was was originally slated to debut on Father’s Day weekend (the weekend of June 19th) through Sony Pictures. It’s safe to say you won’t see it in movie theaters when many are likely to remain closed even as lockdowns lift.

Hanks wrote the movie and plays an officer who takes command of a Navy destroyer during the early days of WWII, when the US had formed an alliance with the UK to deliver critical resources for the fight against Germany.
