While most folks were reveling in the news that Harley Quinn is returning for a third season of animated antics, Ridley Scott’s dystopian sci-fi series Raised by Wolves, has quietly been re-upped for its sophomore season. Wolves follows the exploits of a pair of superhuman androids raising the last remnants of humanity of a distant planet after the fall of Earth.

In an era where streaming services are fragmenting and offering increasingly niche content selections, ViacomCBS is taking the opposite tact. The two formerly rival platforms — with Viacom offering BET+, Showtime and Pluto TV while CBS has its popular All Access — joined forces in 2019 after $30 billion in corporate wrangling. Starting Tuesday All Access will reboot as Paramount+ with a slew of newly additional Viacom shows.

Seems like the longer you live the more expensive life gets, even if only incrementally. While we’ve apparently been spoiled by the current generation of games costing a measly $60 brand new, Sony announced this week that some titles for its upcoming console will get a next-gen $10 price bump. On top of likely needing a new 4K television to get the most out of the system’s juiced graphics card, upgrading to PS5 is quickly proving to be a pricey proposition.

DC Comics plans to “relaunch” its streaming service DC Universe as DC Universe Infinite, a comics-only subscription service. Since 2018, DC fans have been able to access comics, movies and TV shows through the DC Universe app, but last month, we learned that the streaming content would be “migrating” to HBO Max. For Warner Media, which owns DC Comics, it makes sense to have that DC Universe streaming content in HBO Max, not a separate service, but some fans may be less than happy with the change.

DC Universe Infinite will launch in the US on January 21st, and it will begin expanding globally in the summer of 2021. The service will include more than 24,000 comic books at launch. Users will also gain access to digital-first comics and exclusive events, and they’ll be able to get their hands on recently released titles six months after the physical editions drop in stores — as opposed to the current one-year waiting period. But they’ll lose access to DC Universe shows and movies.

Ridley Scott’s creepy android series Raised by Wolves is getting a second season at HBO Max. The streaming platform has confirmed the show’s renewal merely a couple of weeks after its successful launch on September 3rd. According to Deadline, the show grew its audience by 50 percent in its second week and has become the service’s top-performing original, so a renewal doesn’t exactly come as a surprise.

Raised by Wolves’ story revolves around two androids — Father and Mother — raising children on a barren planet after Earth has been destroyed. Of course, things aren’t as simple as they seem, and you’ll soon find yourself watching a story about the remnants of the human race torn apart by religious differences and a powerful robot programmed to protect her brood.

Over the last week, a WarnerMedia shake up at the executive level was followed by significant layoffs, affecting a “majority” of the people working for the DC Universe streaming service. Former Hulu exec and now WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar explained that as a part of AT&T, the plan is to focus on its HBO Max service.

Fans of DC content across comics and video, and now DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee explained what to expect in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. ComicBook.com broke out some of the key points, including that original DC Universe content is now “migrating” to HBO Max (with the exception of Stargirl on CW). As Lee put it, “Truthfully, that’s the best platform for that content. The amount of content you get, not just DC , but generally from WarnerMedia, is huge and it’s the best value proposition, if I’m allowed to use that marketing term. We feel that is the place for that.”

In an interview with Variety, Kilar said Forsell will be heading the service’s efforts to go global. Johannes Larcher, the newly appointed Head of HBO Max International, will help make it happen:

“It’s very important in our future that we go global, that we not only go direct-to-consumer, but we also go global… There’s a fantastic executive named Johannes Larcher who actually has taken both Hulu and other over-the-top services to international locales. And Johannes will be reporting to Andy in that role.”

As a result of the restructuring, WarnerMedia Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt, HBO Max chief content officer Kevin Reilly, and marketing and communications EVP Keith Cocozza are leaving the company. Unfortunately, Kilar also revealed in his letter that the company is reducing the size of its overall workforce. He confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that layoffs will begin next week.

WarnerMedia launched HBO Max in May, offering everything you can watch on HBO along with additional shows and movies for $15 a month. The fact that it’s considerably more expensive than rivals like Netflix and Disney+ probably contributed to its lackluster signup numbers. As part of its second quarter earnings announcement, the company revealed that 4.1 million people signed up for HBO Max in its first month. Disney+, in comparison, had 50 million subscribers by its fifth month. It’s worth noting, though, that Disney+ has been available in the US, Canada and the Netherlands from the start, and it has expanded to other regions since then. Meanwhile, HBO Max is still only available in the US and some US territories.

Cinema buffs have something to look forward to from HBO Max. The streaming service is adapting popular Twitter account One Perfect Shot, which shares some of the most iconic compositions in film history, into a documentary series.

Each 30-minute episode will feature a single director dissecting one of their career-defining shot. They’ll talk about some of the things that went into the composition, with modern technology like 360-degree field of view cameras helping flesh out things. In addition to talking about the challenges they faced, they’ll also touch on lessons they learned along the way. Besides their work, they’ll talk about a shot that inspired them. As they go about talking about their craft, the directors will also touch on a single shot that inspired them. Ava DuVernay, the director of Selma and 13th, will narrate the episodes. She’s also producing the series. 

Ridley Scott’s Raised by Wolves was supposed to be a straight-to-series order for TNT, but it officially became an HBO Max title last year. Now, the newly launched streaming service has released a trailer for the upcoming sci—fi series, and it showcases elements that bring back memories of Scott’s Alien franchise.

Scott directed Raised by Wolves’ first two episodes, making it his directorial debut for TV, while Prisoners’ Aaron Guzikowski served as showrunner and writer. The trailer comes with a brief synopsis of the show that says: “Mother was programmed to protect everyone after Earth had been destroyed. When the big bad wolf shows up, she is the one we must trust.”

The HBO Now app will become simply HBO on Amazon Fire TVs as of August 1st, Variety reports. Existing HBO Now subscribers will have access to the rebranded app. HBO Max is still not available on Fire TVs, and HBO Go will be discontinued across all platforms on July 31st.

This is part of HBO’s ongoing attempt to clear up confusion around its streaming services. For those just tuning in, or understandably a bit lost, HBO Go is an on-demand streaming service for cable subscribers that offers every season and episode of HBO shows. HBO Now is the same on-demand streaming service for cord cutters. HBO Max, which arrived in May, is an on-demand streaming service that offers all the content of Go and Now, plus movies and TV specials, exclusive originals and a selection of non-HBO shows and movies.

HBO Max is working on a new 10-episode series based on popular relaxation and sleep tool Calm. Building on the app’s Sleep Stories, each episode A World of Calm will be about 30-minutes long and will feature “scientifically-engineered” narratives complemented by soothing music and footage. The show will also include a star-studded cast of narrators, with Mahershala Ali, Idris Elba, Oscar Isaac, Nicole Kidman, Zoë Kravitz, Lucy Liu, Cillian Murphy and Keanu Reeves set to lend their voices to the project. 

Calm collaborated with production company Nutopia to create the series. HBO Max-owner WarnerMedia hopes the show will help viewers relax and unwind after a stressful day. The company didn’t say when subscribers will be able to watch A World of Calm. In the meantime, if you own a recent Samsung smart TV, you can access the Calm app from there. 

HBO Max already has a number of DC-related projects with others in the works, but it could do with some more major original programming. Tapping into the most popular DC character and building on an upcoming blockbuster movie seems like a solid choice. It’s unclear whether Pattinson will make any appearances in the show, but if he does, that might persuade some of his fans to sign up to HBO Max. In any case, it’s a fairly safe bet that a show set in the world of The Batman will pull in some subscribers.

There’s no word as yet on when you can expect to start streaming this show. However, given that it’s in development, and most TV and movie productions are on hold amid the pandemic, we’re probably in for quite a wait. The Batman, meanwhile, will be released on October 1st, 2021.
