Clinton herself was inspired to develop a show by other podcasts, Politico says, particularly ones which had her as a guest in the past. She was apparently struck by how different a long podcast interview feels compared to short TV and radio guestings when she and daughter Chelsea Clinton sat with Conan O’Brien for Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. Clinton reportedly enjoyed the relaxed environment at Howard Stern’s studio when he had her as a guest, as well, to the point that they ended up recording for two-and-a-half hours.

The show doesn’t have a launch date yet — more information is expected in the coming weeks — but podcast veterans Kathleen Russo (creator of Alec Baldwin’s Here’s the Thing) and Julie Subrin are said to be producing it. Clinton has reportedly already started recording from a studio in Manhattan and will feature chats with “people of grit and determination.”

Anonymous State Department officials talking to the Post denied that this was prompted by President Trump, who frequently attacked Clinton’s use of private email during his 2016 election campaign and has continued to talk about it in the three years since. The email review has been going on since the Obama administration, they said, and has avoided “any appearance of political bias” through steps such as anonymizing the names of the subjects involved.

However, some dispute those claims of impartiality. The former assistant secretary for Near East Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, said that the State Department sent him a warning for emails sent after his 2012 retirement. There’s also no sign at this stage that the emails in question included references to classified info. It’s also an unusually strict level of scrutiny for an administration that has been accused of numerous security lapses, including weak phone security that allegedly lets China and Russia eavesdrop on Trump’s calls.

It’s not clear what action the State Department will take, if any, once the process is complete. This nonetheless suggests that you could hear a lot more about Clinton’s emails in the near future, even if it’s just as talking points.

The data didn’t include anything more than the email addresses, so the potential for abuse was relatively small. However, it’s concerning that the S3 bucket gave everyone “full control,” letting people not only modify the list but change access permissions.

The DSCC locked down its cloud storage within hours of UpGuard reporting the finding on July 26th. It’s not clear if anyone outside of the DSCC had accessed the data before the discovery.

Whatever happened with the email list, the incident highlights how online campaign security has changed (and not) over the past several years. Official weren’t as acutely aware of the digital threats from Russia and other hostile actors, not to mention the overall consequences of leaving databases vulnerable — now, even a ‘modest’ failure like this considered problematic. With that said, there are still gaping security holes in the US political system, and it’s concerning that the DSCC didn’t catch this mistake on its own.

The podcast will explore some of the issues the foundation is involved with, including hurricane recovery efforts, climate change, the opioid crisis and childhood literacy. It will also include conversations about “global leadership, reflections on the Clinton Administration, and President Clinton’s wide range of interests and well-known intellectual curiosity,” according to the foundation. Former secretary of state and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton won’t officially be a part of the series, but she may make appearances, Variety reported.

“Launching a podcast is a natural extension of President Clinton’s mastery of using storytelling to explain complex issues and his belief that once you know someone’s story, you better understand them as a person and your differences become less important,” said Craig Minassian, chief communications and marketing officer at the Clinton Foundation, said in a statement. “President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton have always sought new ways to create a deeper understanding of how to make an impact which is particularly crucial and challenging in the current media environment.”

There aren’t any episodes yet for the ad-free podcast, save for a two-minute preview clip. Why Am I Telling You This?, which the Clinton Foundation is producing with At Will Media, will officially debut this summer.

The Clintons aren’t the only presidential family to embrace new media — Barack and Michelle Obama are working with Netflix on several projects. Meanwhile, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently started his own podcast.
