HQ Trivia — the once-popular mobile game that turned your random knowledge into a few bucks — abruptly shut down earlier this year after an investment deal fell through. As such, players that still had the app on their phones were probably surprised to receive a push notification last night alerting them to the start of a new broadcast. HQ Trivia, it seems, is back.

For now, at least, as the hows and whys are unclear — although the game’s founder did say last month he was searching for new investment. All we know, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, is that an anonymous investor has stumped up the cash to get the game, dubbed “Chapter Two” back on its feet.

Games will be held every day at 9pm ET, apparently, and each game this week will include a donation towards coronavirus-related efforts — a nice gesture that suggests there might be big money behind the new push. Who knows how long it’ll be around for, but it’s certainly something to do while you’re stuck indoors.

Yusupov didn’t mention the news outright on Twitter, but he said:

He launched HQ Trivia with fellow Vine co-founder Colin Kroll in 2017. The app enjoyed tremendous popularity for a time after it launched, frequently attracting over a million players per livestreamed mobile game, perhaps because it promised the chance to win real cash prizes.

Then, in 2018, Kroll died of an apparent overdose. A few months later, original host and “quiz daddy” Scott Rogowsky left for a sports streaming network. The app also attracted cheaters, who made it hard for legit players to win any money, and had to compete with a bunch of copycats, including Facebook’s. Confetti, the social giant’s take on a livestreamed game show, only lasted for a year, showing how quickly the format’s popularity waned since HQ Trivia’s launch.

It’s also adding occasional polls that ask players to collectively decide on topics for the game — good to potentially get the game into your areas of knowledge and for its makers to keep you engaged. Matt Richards is still the regular primetime host, a role he took over after the exit of Scott Rogowsky, with others like Sharon Carpenter, Anna Roisman and Lauren Gambino rotating in for special games or other events.

Last night’s season three finale included over 300,000 players and had to restart after a delay. HQ University (a version of HQ Trivia that was already available through Assistant) was given as an example of the type of game you’ll be able to play, along with Jungle Dream, an interactive word game. You probably shouldn’t expect AAA blockbuster games here, as Canvas uses open web technologies such as HTML, CSS and Javascript, so these Actions seem likely to be akin to web apps. However, it certainly seems you’ll have more options for things to do with your Nest display in the not-too-distant future.

HQ Trivia has been broadcasting its live game show to mobile devices for about a year and a half now, and usually the events were hosted by “quiz daddy” Scott Rogowsky. He hasn’t been on the air for the last few weeks, and as TMZ first reported today, that’s because he’s parted ways with HQ after taking a new job hosting a baseball show on sports streaming network DAZN. Apparently Rogowsky wanted to continue hosting HQ part-time, however the company declined to keep him on for weekend games.

Former guest host Matt Richards is now the regular primetime host, and in a series of tweets Rogowsky called ChangeUp “a dream opportunity that I simply couldn’t pass up.” A statement provided to TechCrunch said:
