The total production run compares closely to the 150 Pininfarina expects for its Battista EV, although the Italian badge hasn’t said how its sales are faring.

It’s not completely unexpected that Lotus would sell out. The hypercar world is dominated by ultra-wealthy customers who frequently snap up vehicles without a moment’s hesitation, to the point where manufacturers sometimes announce cars that have already been spoken for. However, the market for electric hypercars is still very young. Lotus’ performance suggests that many of these customers have no qualms about spending their fortunes on zero-emissions hypercars, and that bodes well for the cachet of EVs among car fans with more reasonably-sized bank accounts.

Like many super-rare cars, Pininfarina is also playing up the craftsmanship and cosmetics. The Anniversario will be hand-built in Cambiano with a new Grigio Antonelliano color option, unique leather and Alcantara seats and loads of engraving and labels to remind everyone that you bought a special edition.

There’s just one problem: you probably won’t get it even if you’re rolling in cash. The €2.6 million (about $2.9 million) price tag is an obstacle in itself, but Pininfarina is also making just five examples of the Anniversario. If you’re fortunate enough to have the option of placing an order, it might already be too late. Otherwise, you’ll just have to ‘settle’ for one of the 147 other Battistas that will start reaching customers in late 2020. It’s a tremendous hardship, we know.

While auto enthusiasts will likely want to hear about the Hipercar’s specs, they can expect some changes to the car’s looks too. A representative told Autoblog that “certain things will have changed,” but gave no further details. Ariel will hopefully announce pricing information as well. In 2017, founder Simon Saunders said, “It will be an expensive car because of the technology involved. But when compared to £1 million-plus supercars, which it will outperform, it’s going to represent excellent value for money.”

Ariel planned on fully unveiling the Hipercar in 2019 and then selling it in 2020. Now that the specs won’t be fully divulged until the second half of 2020, we may not see the car go on sale until 2021 or later.

According to Lotus, the hypercar has “entered its initial build phase in the UK.” That should put it on track for production in 2020 when it will debut as “the most powerful production series road car in the world.” In a statement, executive director Matt Windle said “Everything about the Evija is ‘For The Drivers’. I don’t believe there is another EV in the world that can claim this. From the mid-engined-inspired Lotus layout, to the aerodynamics and downforce, the driving position, vehicle stance and unbelievable performance. It is instantly recognisable as special with a unique character, yet it is unquestionably a Lotus.”

Ever since Lamborghini showed off its wild MIT-collaborated Terzo Millennio concept we’ve been waiting to see what a production version could look like, and we might find out soon. Autoblog points out this teaser image posted to the company’s Instagram page which shows the logo, a silhouette and some Y-shaped LEDs that harken back to the 2017 concept.

Features like a self-healing carbon fiber shell, in-wheel electric motors and supercapacitor energy storage probably aren’t ready for prime time yet, but Lamborghini has seemingly been preparing for a limited edition follow-up ever since.

The Aventador and Huracan are scheduled to get hybrid drivetrains eventually and Lamborghini’s Asterion concept showed one possible future, but this could give an early preview of the technology. Whatever the vehicle is, we should see more of it at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show that officially begins September 12th.

No, Lotus isn’t ready to spill the beans on its Type 130 electric hypercar. It is, however, ready to give the car a name: meet the Evija (pronounced “ev-eye-a”). While the company’s choice of name is a bit strained — it means “the first in existence” or “the living one” — it makes sense given both Lotus’ traditions and what it represents. The company has long given its cars names starting with E (Esprit, Elise, Exige), and it only seems fitting to name an EV as, well, “Ev.”

Lotus said that the Type 130 will be unveiled in London later this year, but other than a stylized drawing and video (below), offered no details or specifications. Lotus said it will follow in the footsteps of other famous “Type” cars like the Type 78 and Type 88, respectively the world’s first ground effect and carbon fiber F1 cars.

According to a report from last year, the Type 130 could be a $2.5 million hypercar with over 1,000 HP designed to compete with Pininfarina’s Batista and the Rimac Two, both EVs with 1,900 HP, top speeds of over 200 MPH and eye-watering price tags.
