GameStop might just help you put the finishing touches on your computer setup. It’s running a PC gaming sale between now and May 16th that promises deals on a slew of hardware. To start, it’s offering a $100 gift coupon if you buy any MSI laptop with a 10th-gen Intel processor inside. GameStop is also promising discounts up to 20 percent off accessories, including an ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q gaming monitor for $620 (normally $650). Its 165Hz, IPS-based 1440p screen should up to the job of handling a high-performance gaming rig.

Besides 7.1 sound, the new Stinger models include the type of features you would expect from affordable, no-frills gaming headsets in 2020. Both weigh in at about 245 grams and feature 40mm drivers. You can also swivel their built-in microphones up to mute yourself. The steel sliders allow you to adjust the fit of the headband as needed, and volume controls are present on the earcups. The wired model features an 8-foot cable with a 3.5mm connector at the end. The wireless model, meanwhile, connects to your PC through a 2.4GHz USB adapter. HyperX claims you’ll get about 17 hours of battery life on a single charge. Range is also respectable, at a max of 65 feet. You’ll also be able to buy Xbox and PlayStation specific versions that include matching color accents.

You can order both headsets starting today through the HyperX online store. Virtual surround sound can be hit and miss, but we’ve tended to like HyperX’s past offerings, so if you’re in the market for an affordable gaming headset, this might be worth a look.

Besides a new, more premium-looking design that forgoes the usual garish details you see on gaming peripherals, the Flight S carriers over a lot of the same features that made the Cloud Flight a popular choice for gamers. Like its predecessor, the new model’s mic is detachable. Battery life is likewise rated at up to 30 hours on a single charge, and the 50mm drivers can output 7.1 virtual surround sound. The headset also features a maximum range of approximately 65 feet thanks to the 2.4GHz USB transmitter you plug into your PC or PlayStation 4.

The 15W ChargePlay Base HyperX sells costs $60, and can charge two devices simultaneously. You can also top up the Cloud Flight S with the micro-USB cable that comes inside the box, but then you have to deal with the slight inconvenience of fiddling with a micro-USB port.

While it’s a bummer the Cloud Flight S doesn’t come with a charging pad, Qi support gives it a unique differentiator over other headsets in the price range like the $150 SteelSeries Arctis 7. Even when you factor in the price of buying a charging pad, the Cloud Flight S is still more affordable than other gaming headsets that offer alternative charging options. For example, Astro’s A50 headset costs $300. It also uses a proprietary connector, which means, if you don’t want to use a USB cable, you can only charge the headset with the included base station.

HyperX also announced today that it plans to bring its Pulsefire Raid mouse to North America. The 11-button mouse was previously only available in a couple of Asian countries. You can program all of Pulsefire Raid’s buttons, making it a good fit for games like League of Legends and Fortnite where a couple of extra easily accessible keybinds can give you a competitive edge. It also features a Pixart 3389 sensor with a max 16,000 DPI setting and customizable RGB lighting. Despite all the extra buttons, it weighs 125 grams, which is on the lighter side for a mouse of this type. The Pulsefire Raid will be available this month for $60.

In my case, that person is me, and I’m here to tell you that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is the best throwback game money can buy. Bloodstained was created by longtime Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi, and it’s essentially a greatest-hits compilation of all the best bits of his seminal series, with just enough changes to ensure Konami’s lawyers don’t come knocking. Control

What do you get the gamer who has everything? You get weird. Control is a top-notch sci-fi action game from Alan Wake studio Remedy Entertainment, and it’s filled with supernatural phenomena, government conspiracies and alien entities. It’s kind of like The X-Files but if Scully had a shape-shifting gun and the power of telekinesis.

It’s possible that Control slipped through the cracks for plenty of gaming fans this year, lost among high-profile launches like Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, Pokemon: Sword and Pokemon Shield, Kingdom Hearts 3, Apex Legends and whatever Fortnite is doing now. Overwatch (Switch)

Switch owners have plenty of options when it comes to games. The system has a bevy of Mario titles, indie games and AAA experiences ready to roll, but when it comes to multiplayer shooters, the choice has basically been Splatoon or something from Bethesda. That is, until Overwatch showed up on Switch.

Overwatch is already a successful competitive shooter for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and it has a robust international eSports scene. The Switch version of the game isn’t as high fidelity as other editions, but it’s a fantastic way for fans to scratch the Overwatch itch while traveling, before going to bed or while their main gaming screen is otherwise occupied. Overwatch on Switch offers a more casual competitive scene, and something unique for Nintendo’s library. — J.C.

Risk of Rain 2 (Switch)

This is a true ground-floor opportunity. Risk of Rain 2 comes from independent studio Hopoo Games, and it’s the sequel to the acclaimed 2013 roguelike game of the same name (sans one “2”). Technically, Risk of Rain 2 won’t come out until spring of next year, but it’s playable now as an Early Access title, allowing fans to provide feedback to the developers and help polish the final product. But so far, Risk of Rain 2 is an addictive, nonstop shooting and looting frenzy with a spectacular soundtrack, and it’s worth playing as soon as possible. Plus, participating in the Early Access community is a great way to earn forum cred as a gaming fan.

Risk of Rain 2 is available digitally on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC, but it’s getting a physical version for consoles in November. The boxed edition comes with the original Risk of Rain and its sequel, showcasing the franchise’s seamless jump from 2D to 3D. It costs just $30 on PS4 and Xbox One or $40 on Switch. — J.C.

The film is an epic follow-up to its slightly less acclaimed precursor, Avengers: Infinity War. Heck, if your giftee has been lax about collecting them, you may as well get both. As usual, the package includes both the physical disc and a digital code, so owners can enjoy the uncompressed media experience while also having the freedom to watch on the fly from various digital platforms. It charts his childhood instinct for gaming the system (case in point: changing the time on clocks in the family house to stay up late) as well as his path from the army to the CIA to becoming an NSA contractor. Then, of course, is the the play-by-play of his whistle-blowing. The memoir is a glimpse at what it took to reveal the extent of digital mass surveillance, a phenomenon that six years after Snowden’s revelations, we all accept as normal. — C.I.

The Boys Omnibus Vol. 1-4 (Garth Ennis)

If the sci-fi fan on your list is big on antiheroes but not so much space adventures, introduce them to The Boys. This four-volume graphic novel series from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson tells of a world dominated by corrupt superhuman “heroes” and the corporate powers that control them. The only ones willing and able to stand up in this dystopia are a motley team of special operatives, assassins and one poor schmuck in way over his head. This story is a must-read, but be warned: Things get real bloody, real quick. — A.T.

Tools for Thought (Howard Rheingold)

For tech enthusiasts who usually have their eye on the future, there’s an easily consumable read on computing’s history written by Howard Rheingold called Tools for Thought. He covers some of the key figures in the history of coding and tech going much further back than the 1970s homebrew explosion in Silicon Valley. The book was originally published in 1985, and as a futurist, Rheingold tried to imagine what was coming next. That provides an interesting quirk, reading his predictions and perspective after the fact while he was in the middle of technology’s still-emerging story. This updated version, released in 2000, has an afterward with interviews including some of the document’s key players, helping to close the circle, at least for now. — J.T.

Detective Pikachu 4K Blu-ray

There are few things as fun as sitting down to watch a cute family movie that’s as entertaining for adults as it is for kids. And there’s something for everyone in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, now available on 4K Blu-ray. For grown-ups, it’s a pretty serious film noir about a boy looking for his lost father. For kids, his sidekick is a bright yellow mouse that shoots electricity out of its rear.

The story is interesting enough, but you’re really there to be swept away by the charm of Ryan Reynolds. Since you can’t play Deadpool in the family room, this will have to do as the next best thing. Plus, there are enough knowing winks and gags to keep everyone entertained between action set pieces. We’ve all gotten too used to listening to compressed audio files in the past few decades. If there’s a big music fan on your list, chances are they’ll appreciate upgrading their listening setup, and a subscription to Amazon Music HD would be a big step in that direction. At $15 per month (or $13 for Prime members), Amazon’s high-quality streaming service is cheaper than Tidal and still offers 50 million songs in more than double the bitrate of most streaming services. Amazon says that a selection of that catalog is even available in bitrates that are more than 10 times higher than other streaming services’, music that should be indistinguishable from CDs. It’s doubtful anyone will enjoy every game, but we’ve found the quality level is consistently high. There are games you can play for just a few minutes at a time and others that you can lose hours in. Disney+

Regardless of who’s on your holiday list, chances are they’ll find something to watch on Disney+. The company’s much-hyped and long-awaited streaming service is finally here, and it mixes up compelling original content from the Star Wars and Marvel universes with an insanely vast back catalog, including films from Pixar, Disney’s recent Fox acquisition, those aforementioned Star Wars and Marvel films and — of course — a huge selection of Disney films from the past 80 years. Headspace

One of the best ways to keep stress levels in check is to take a few minutes to breathe and center yourself. There are plenty of apps out there for guided meditation, but we especially like Headspace. It’s available on mobile and desktop, and it works with Google Home- and Alexa-powered devices, so wherever your frazzled friend is, they’ll be able to snag some self-care time.

For those who might be intimidated, Headspace is loaded with simple explanations and cute animations that make meditation feel approachable. Masterclass

If you want to learn something, you can read a book, find a tutor or hope that someone’s made a tutorial on YouTube. MasterClass has put its own extravagant spin on that last category, with A-listers in a number of fields sharing their expertise. That includes basketball lessons from Steph Curry, acting classes from Helen Mirren or photography tips from Annie Leibovitz. Why not give someone the gift of learning and help them start their resolutions in the best possible manner?

Hell, even if they’re not interested in learning the skills, simply listening to these people talk is worth the price. Each individual MasterClass course costs $90 and comes with, on average, three hours of video, a workbook and some exercises to complete. But for a one-off payment of $180, MasterClass becomes a Netflix of smart stuff for a whole year. Nintendo Switch Online

It took Nintendo a long time to launch its online service, and as such there are probably lots of Switch owners who still don’t have it yet. If there’s a gamer in your life who matches that description, now is a good time to get them on board, especially if they’re a fan of retro games. In addition to being required for online play, Nintendo’s Switch Online service now includes dozens of games from the classic NES and Super NES systems, making it a great machine for a nostalgia binge.

Old games aren’t the only draw though. Earlier this year, Nintendo released Tetris 99, an online battle royale reimagining of the classic puzzle game — and only Switch online players could try it. At $20 for a full year of membership, it’s a no-brainer. Are you gifting someone a shiny new Switch Lite this year? If so, throw this in and enjoy extra brownie points. — N.I.

Digital music production can take a lot of work, but if you want to open the doors for someone who has the itch (and a computer), a Serato Studio subscription ($10 a month) might be the perfect gift. For DJs with Serato’s software, the interface will be familiar. Those with a controller already have a workstation interface ready to go. Even people taking their first steps in music making will find it easy to get things rolling through the intuitive interface and curated sound packs — which arrive fresh each month. Trust us, music software can get expensive, so it’s much easier for someone just starting out to make payments for something like Auto-Tune than it is to drop more than $300 on it in one shot. Turtle Beach Recon 70

We’ve recommended this a few times in recent gift guides, and for good reason: It’s comfortable, affordable and the audio is stellar. The faux leather ear cups mean they don’t get too hot and are easy to clean, while the mic flips up for easy storage. And it hits a sweet spot of $35 — less than the cost of most Switch games.

Logitech G432

While the company is better known for its non-gaming accessories, Logitech’s G line of gaming gear is no slouch. We’re particularly fond of the G432 because of its incredibly lightweight plastic build that also manages to be surprisingly durable, and a comfortable fit that can sit on your head all day. At only $50, it makes a great choice for a kid’s first headset.

Turtle Beach Recon Spark

Another good headset for the kids is the Recon Spark ($50), which offers a snug, but still breathable, fit for small heads and has pretty decent noise isolation to boot. It’s also one of the cuter headsets out there too, thanks to a soothing white and lavender color scheme that will appeal to femmes and anyone who’s tired of “g4m3r” oriented red, black or green designs.

HyperX Cloud Alpha

If you prefer something a bit more high-end (and, accordingly, are willing to spend a little more), we recommend the HyperX Cloud Alpha ($86). The large mic is great for chatting over Discord, and you can detach it when out and about. The audio of the 50mm drivers sounds great, and it has excellent sound isolation so it’ll be good for hearing sound effects and music over the clatter of a subway train during your daily commute. There are two color schemes available — the standard black and red, and a prettier white and lilac version — so you can match it to your personal style.

SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless

While many wireless headsets are compatible with the Switch, they rely on USB receivers, meaning your console needs to be docked for them to work. Not so with the Arctis 1 Wireless, whose 2.4GHz receiver connects via USB-C, so it can easily be plugged into your Switch while it’s in portable mode. This makes the Arctis 1 Wireless the only real wireless choice for the Switch Lite, though the $100 asking price means you’ll pay a premium for the privilege. But at least you’re guaranteed solid audio and a great fit, as with all Arctis headsets.

All of these headsets will work well with the Switch or Switch Lite, though we’ve focused on the ones you can use with the latter system since it’s out now. If you already have a wireless headset that you refuse to part with, HomeSpot’s Bluetooth transmitter ($40) for the Switch might work in a pinch, and it even has a built-in mic. AUDIO

Obviously you want to pick the one that sounds good, but ultimately that’s a subjective measure we can’t advise you on. However, it is influenced by a few factors you can select for, depending on how you game.

Stereo vs. surround sound

If you crave immersive surround sound, it narrows your options a bit. Ask yourself how crucial 5.1 or 7.1 channels are to your gaming experience. If you don’t play a lot of FPS games, you’ll probably be fine with a stereo headset or 5.1 at most. 7.1 should be reserved for titles where sound can make a big difference in knowing where your enemies are, like in Overwatch and Battlefield V. If you absolutely insist on having surround sound no matter what, the good news is that 5.1 and 7.1 headsets are getting cheaper, and “3D sound” is a big selling point for a lot of companies these days, thanks to audio-intensive AAA games like Spider-Man.

Mixer or DAC?

If you’re obsessed with getting the most out of your highs and lows or deal with a huge variety of audio sources that makes a one-size-fits-all arrangement a no-go, then buy a headset with a mixer.

Or if high-fidelity audio is important to you, an external DAC can bring your games to life. The SteelSeries Arctis Pro is the only headset with a DAC that we know of, and for $250, it is worth the money. But if you don’t like to limit your options, you can also purchase a portable DAC like the AudioQuest Dragonfly ($300) for your 3.5mm headset.

CONNECTION

With 3.5mm connections becoming increasingly scarce in a lot of devices, you need to pay a little more attention to how your headset hooks up to your system. Otherwise you may have just bought a fancy pair of earmuffs.

Wired vs. wireless

There’s a lot to consider here, especially in regards to what you are playing on and where. The first question is whether you’re playing on a console or PC. If you’re playing on a PC, you’re most likely planted in front of the monitor and don’t need the freedom of wireless as much as someone sitting on a couch several feet away from their TV.

However, a wired headset would just be another wire at an already cluttered desk. So if you’ve invested in a wireless keyboard and mouse, you might as well complete the set and keep your workspace clear. Many wired headsets now also use USB to connect, which is fine when you have full-size ports but less handy when you’re gaming on a slim laptop with USB-C connections; dongles aren’t fun, and some headsets won’t even work with them.

If you’re playing on a console, you’ll probably prefer a wireless set because… well, you’re not near the system. If you’re working on the Switch in handheld mode, you’ll need a wired 3.5mm set, but docked it can and will work fine with many wireless headsets, thanks to a firmware update last year. So make sure you run those system updates, folks.

USB vs. 3.5mm vs. optical

Until a few years ago, optical was the gold standard for audio quality. These days, you’ll get roughly the same out of a USB connection, since they’re both digital signals. But USB is best when it comes to ease of use. You should only go for optical if you already have an extensive optical setup (like older AV equipment) or need to free up some USB ports.

Of course, nothing trumps 3.5mm for accessibility, as you’ll find jacks on almost all laptops, desktops, portable consoles and the occasional phone. (USB-C gaming headsets aren’t that common.)

COMFORT

Aside from general audio quality, this is probably the most important feature you’ll have to consider when you buy a headset: There’s no point in worrying about all the other features when you can’t stand wearing the thing on your head.

Headband

Many headsets opt for a padded headband that you can adjust, and it works out for most people. But those with smaller heads (especially kids) might struggle to find a snug fit. In those cases an elastic strap headband is the way to go; it accommodates a lot of skull sizes and doesn’t require any fiddling to get it right. People with larger skulls might want to stay away from these, as they can be a little too tight.

Ear cups

Even more important are the ear cups, which will be cloth, leather or faux leather. The three have different feels that come down to personal preference (textured vs. smooth). Cloth is considered to be more breathable, but wear and tear will also make it rough after awhile, meaning you’ll need to swap the covers out (if possible). Leather or faux leather pads will never get scratchy and can be easily wiped down, but they may also retain more heat.

Cooling features

Some manufacturers have started looking at other ways of making headsets less like a furnace on your head. The HP Mindframe ($64) goes all out with an internal cooling system that’s like having an ice pack on your head, which I personally find disconcerting, though your mileage may vary. A better and cheaper solution is simply larger, more-open cups that leave some room for your ears to breathe. They don’t necessarily have to be open-back headphones either. Razer’s Kraken headset ($60) has an open-vent setup that doesn’t leak a lot of sound to the outside world.

AESTHETICS

Lighting

Do you game in front of a mirror? Are you planning to take your headset to a rave after you’re done playing? If not, don’t bother. If you’re wearing an LED headset and no one sees it… have you just wasted a bunch of money? (Yes.)

Ultimately, the kind of headset you prefer will be subjective in terms of audio and comfort. It’s probably better to try one out in person before dropping hundreds of dollars on it. But if you don’t get that chance, know that the quality of headsets has gone up dramatically in the past few years. So if you stick with an established company like Razer, SteelSeries or Logitech, you’re bound to find something you’ll be happy with.

Announced at Gamescom in Cologne, the new Cloud Alpha S introduces features like bass adjustment sliders and virtual surround sound. There’s a new slider added to the left ear cup so you can fine-tune the bass response on the fly. Plus there’s 7.1 surround sound which has been custom tuned to be more immersive.

We love the original Cloud Alpha for its comfort, affordable price and incredible sound. The new Cloud Alpha S keeps the dual chamber design from previous models which creates a more dynamic sound which can produce rich bass and hit highs without distortion. It also has the same memory foam ear cushions and solid frame which made the headset robust enough to take a beating.

The new model “gives gamers precise sound and intuitive control features to enjoy fully immersive soundscapes,” according to a HyperX representative.

The previous model was a bargain at under $100. The updated headset will cost a little more, but for the extra features it comes with, it might be worth shelling out for. The Cloud Alpha S goes on sale in September for $129.99.

Toto Washlet C100

Street price: $360; deal price $293

With an on-page coupon, is a great deal on our more affordable pick for a washlet toilet seat.

The Toto Washlet C100 is the runner-up in our review of the best bidet toilet seat or washlet. John Higgins wrote, “If you want to save a few bucks or if our top pick is sold out, we recommend going with the slightly pared-down version of the C200, the Toto Washlet C100. It has just as many water-pressure settings, as well as an option for an oscillating water stream (but no pulsing).”

HyperX Cloud Flight Wireless Headset

We tend to only see a few sales a year on these computer speakers. At $80, this matches the best price we’ve tracked.

The HyperX Cloud Flight is the top pick in our review of the best gaming headsets. Thorin Klosowski wrote, “Comfortable across a wide range of head sizes, the headset provides detailed spacious sound that’s perfect for games and a serviceable mic.”

Plantronics BackBeat FIT 3100 (Grey)

This deal matches the lowest price we’ve seen for our pick for truly wireless running headphones.

ASUS ZenBook 13 UX331FA-AS51

This is a solid price drop on a variant of our affordable ultrabook pick. The UX331FA-AS51 is, according to our writers, identical to our pick, save for the slightly larger size, shorter battery life, and larger storage space.

The Asus ZenBook 13 is a variant on the budget pick in our review of the best ultrabooks.
