The saying goes, “the internet is forever.” Now, the Wayback Machine and Cloudflare are doing their part to strengthen that adage. The two are joining forces to ensure more web pages are archived, according to a post on the Internet Archive blog.

The Wayback Machine, a project of Internet Archive, allows you to view web pages as they appeared on certain past dates. Internet Archive obtains URLs to archive a few different ways, including user submissions and “crawling” from lists of millions of sites. The partnership with Cloudflare means Internet Archive has another source for URLs — websites that use Cloudflare’s Always Online service. Always Online creates a static image of web pages for clients in case their servers go offline. As customers enter URLs to Always Online, they will also automatically be submitted for archiving at the Wayback Machine.

The plaintiffs argue that the IA has no legal rights to distribute the books, which it scans and uploads to its servers, via Open Library or the National Emergency Library. The plaintiffs go as far as charging the Archive with piracy. The lawsuit seeks a declaration that the IA is committing copyright infringement, injunctions to stop the IA from sharing copyrighted work and statutory damages, which could be as much as $150,000 per infringement, TorrentFreak explains.

“As a library, the Internet Archive acquires books and lends them, as libraries have always done. This supports publishing and authors and readers. Publishers suing libraries for lending books, in this case, protected digitized versions, and while schools and libraries are closed, is not in anyone’s interest. We hope this can be resolved quickly,” IA founder Brewster Kahle said in a statement provided to Engadget.

A nonprofit, the IA clearly isn’t meant for piracy. In addition to creating the Open Library, it has attempted to archive everything Trump says on video in order to help fact checkers, fixed nine million broken Wikipedia links, saved Google+ posts and started a historical web collection to power services like the Wayback Machine. There’s no guarantee that this lawsuit will succeed, but if the IA is slapped with statutory damages it could be a fatal blow to the organization.

Update 06/01/2020 5:10PM ET: This story was updated to include a statement from Internet Archive.

So far, 130,000 references have been linked to 50,000 digitized books that are hosted by the Archive. To see an example of the new digital referencing in action, you can head to the Wikipedia page for Martin Luther King, Jr. If you look at the reference for Adam Fairclough’s book To Redeem the Soul of America: The Southern Christian Leadership Conference & Martin Luther King Jr at the bottom of the page, you’ll see it’s a clickable link. Clicking takes you to the Internet Archive’s digital version of the book, open to the page from which the reference was taken.

When you open a digital book hosted by the Archive, you can see a few pages of preview to check the reference information. If you want to read more, you can borrow a digital copy of the book through the Controlled Digital Lending program.

The linking of references to digital books is done both by users and by robots, and has been performed in the English, Greek and Arabic versions of Wikipedia. The Internet Archive says it intends to continue working with Wikipedia communities to scan more books and link them to references. This isn’t the first time the two sites have worked together, as the group previously helped fix 9 million broken links on the encyclopedia using its Wayback Machine archive.

“Together we can achieve Universal Access to All Knowledge,” said Mark Graham, Director of the Wayback Machine project. “One linked book, paper, web page, news article, music file, video and image at a time.”

Ang Lee has a fair guess as to where tomorrow’s cinema experiences are headed: high frame-rates, dense resolutions, and 3D CGI. Engadget Senior Editor Devindra Hardawar sits down with the iconic director.

To keep the deliveries flowing, companies like Amazon are increasingly turning to dropping packages at a secure location in order to move their drivers on to their next destination. That’s why we have Lockers and Amazon has access to your Honda’s trunk. But, not to be outdone, Walmart this week launched its answer to the Key service with an audacious plan to stock to your refrigerator. No, not the one filled with sodas and beer out by the garage, the one in your kitchen.

Take a stroll through the halcyon days of gaming when graphics were measured in bits rather than frame rates with these classics from the command line era, presented by the Internet Archive. No CD drive required! [puts on onion belt] Ok so CDs were a form of physical media …

If you’d rather not have your activity recorded for posterity, you can either delete your Google+ account (if it’s not too late) or else follow the Internet Archive’s process for removing specific content.

It’s not completely surprising that efforts would be underway to preserve Google+, but it’s an unusual situation. You don’t see archivists preserving a major social network (albeit one that struggled to compete) very often. The question is whether or not it will be a comprehensive record — there isn’t much time left to safeguard every last ounce of public content.
