The Windows 10 20H2 update will arrive next month with a few new features, like a visually refreshed Start menu, improved notifications, preinstalled Chromium Edge browser and the ability to Alt+Tab through Edge tabs. It’s also bringing more of the features from Control Panel into the modernized Settings page as Microsoft phases the older system tool out.

They’ve been in testing for Insiders over the last few months, but a post on the Windows Blog reveals that the update rolling out now represents what they expect will be the final build. Things should be fairly stable, but Windows Subsystem for Linux users will want to check the notes about a known issue.

As of summer 2021, Microsoft will remove the Flash-related developer frameworks, group policies and user interfaces from legacy Edge and IE11 through cumulative updates across multiple Windows versions, including Windows 10 and 8.1.

Corporate customers that need Flash will still have options. Edge will let Flash run as a plugin through the Internet Explorer mode. You’ll switch away from the Microsoft-supplied Flash code, though, and you won’t get Microsoft’s support as a result.

Microsoft doesn’t have much choice about the primary end-of-2020 cutoff. Google is removing Flash support from Chromium, the underlying engine for the current version of Edge, around the same time. Adobe has added that it will tell people to uninstall Flash well before that change happens. It’s nonetheless good to know just when Microsoft will drop the web technology — and you probably won’t miss it given its obsolescence and security issues.

Edge, Microsoft’s replacement for its often-criticized Internet Explorer was first released in 2015. But last year, the company rebuilt the browser from the ground up, this time with Google’s open source Chromium framework rather than its proprietary EdgeHTML engine. It’s been available to users since January, but Microsoft only hosted it as a manual download, and it lacked some important features. Now, a complete version of the refreshed Edge is available as part of Windows Update, making it easier for everyday users to experience the new features and optimized performance.

Having a shared codebase with Chrome, Edge is now more similar to Google’s browser — compatibility with websites is improved, as is performance. (Some users report that Edge is actually less resource-intensive than Chrome.) It also can now run extensions, which are hosted on the Microsoft Store. When installing the browser via Microsoft Update, Windows will automatically migrate settings, bookmarks and other features, which should help to make the upgrade a smooth process.

Edge — which is built on Google’s open-source Chromium — allows adventurous users to test out new features in its Insider program. Microsoft hopes to enable vertical tabs for its testing community in the next few months. The feature will provide an uncluttered view of the tabs the user has open, allowing for more intuitive switching. The screenshot provided by Microsoft makes it look like a user will be able to scroll through a list that shows the favicon and name of each open website. This will hopefully prevent the common headache of closing the wrong tab.

One unique feature that Edge currently offers on desktop is called Collections. Users can drag articles they’re researching into the Collections area, and Edge will organize the information into a visually pleasing arrangement, ready for quick reference or for printing. Microsoft says that the workflow is coming soon to the mobile version of Edge. This might be useful for doing light research on-the-go and then hunkering down when a user is back on their laptop or desktop.

Some more minor updates will be coming to Edge, as well. Tracking prevention lets a user choose from three presets of security measures to fit their preferences, while Password Monitor will let a user know if their credentials have been exposed on the dark web. Finally, Immersive Reader provides a distraction-free mode so users can concentrate on reading an article.

These updates show that Microsoft is serious about contending with Google and Mozilla. Hopefully the competition will bring some innovation to web browsers, which haven’t seen a major revolution in some time.

It’s no surprise that the overhauled Edge, as things stand, apes the design of Google Chrome — it relies on the same Chromium open source base. It’s integrated with several Microsoft services, including Windows Defender SmartScreen (to detect phishing and malware), Bing and Microsoft News.

Edge also supports Chrome extensions and those from Microsoft’s own extensions store. You’ll also be able to sync your favorites across preview builds (cross-platform password and browser history sync will arrive later). Thankfully, there’s a dark mode too.

Microsoft is focusing on the fundamentals right now, so there’s limited language support, for instance. Spellcheck and media casting are also unavailable for the time being. The preview builds are currently only available on Windows 10. Support for other versions of Windows, Mac, and other platforms (including Xbox One) will arrive later.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is working with Google to help push Chromium forward. It’s already contributed to the project in several areas, including accessibility, touch and scrolling. It plans to work with the “larger Chromium open source community to create better web compatibility for our customers and less fragmentation of the web for all web developers.”
